President's Palette
Hello!

The fall professional development conference is Friday, November 22 nd through Sunday, November 24 th at the Hyatt Regency in Greenville. Last year we had ninety five different presentations, both hands on and lecture. Let's surpass that number this year. We have several incredible keynote speakers lined up, however the breakout sessions are invaluable. If you have not presented in the past, please reflect on your teaching best practices and submit a proposal this year.

Toni Scott, a multimedia artist from California will speak to us about her creative process Friday afternoon. She is an American and a citizen of the Muscogee Creek nation. She also descends from African and European ancestry. Her art, both exhibitions and installations include personal narratives and genealogical information.

Thom Knab, the National Art Education Association president will be the featured speaker at our awards ceremony on Saturday afternoon. Thom is an elementary art educator in Buffalo, New York who has been teaching art for 29 years.
We have several other dynamic speakers who will be presenting in large group breakout sessions: James Wells from Crayola will be presenting on the topic of arts integration, Kara Foster-Lee will present first steps in implementing mindfulness in your classroom, Hallie Bertling, artist and book illustrator will talk about her process and Kathy Scaggs from Amaco will share great clay ideas.

New to our conference this year is a conference app, you will be able to download presentations and handouts from all sessions! We have also contracted to have an onsite registration system to make the registration process easier and faster for all members and attendees.

Make your plans to attend now. Verify that your membership is current, talk to your administration and/or PTA about paying for your registration. Plan ahead, save money and make sure that you will be with us in November. It will be a great conference!
The SCAEA board often hears from members that Greenville is the favorite conference location. If you have not been to Greenville lately and want to learn more, check out this link.

Best,

Higher Ed Division News from Kimberly Wilson
South Carolina Education Reform
What an exciting legislative session in South Carolina! The House Education Reform Bill was released late Jan, and the discussion never stopped. Although the House bill did pass committee, the Senate decided to slow down the process and kept the bill in committee. This ultimately means no new changes for our K-12 alumni or preparation programs...for now. With this pause, Arts in Basic Curriculum Project (ABC) Project and the SC Arts Alliance are collaborating to convene a work group to write an Arts Amendment to include explicit and clear recommendations for the 2020 legislative session. Should you be interested in serving, please contact me or GP McLeer ( [email protected] ) as soon as possible.

Let's celebrate each other. What accomplishments would you like to share with your community? Let's celebrate with each other. We are our own publicist, so please do not be shy. Feel free to email  links to any announcement or publication of your work or write a brief description of the accomplishment and I will include in the next SCAEA newsletter or Facebook page. To get the ball rolling, I officially completed my Ed.D. and my study was selected as the 2019 Leadership Excellence Award for Walden University .

Conference 2019...something new
This year, a session will be offered that is unlike any other offered in recent years. It will be a room that is arranged in auditorium style with a projector and screen. No pre-arranged speakers will be assigned, it will be a voluntary sign-up schedule in 15 increments. The idea is for our students and novice professionals to sign up for "mini" presentations, giving them a taste of presenting and networking among their peers in a potentially less intimidating way.
Presentations could range from sharing student samples from their teaching internship, PowerPoints that share links and resources of favorite research, methodology, etc. - the choice is theirs! Be on the lookout for further details, but please encourage your students to not only attend the conference, but participate in this session.
-----
Please contact me about these topics or any other idea, suggestion, and contribution you wish to make in any form of communication you prefer: [email protected] 149 McLaurin Hall, Winthrop University, Rock Hill, SC 29733; (803)323-3010
Take you for your time and involvement.

Arts Curricular Innovation Grants
The services and activities of the Arts Curricular Innovation Grants are going as planned. Grants are in the process of being read and rated and we expect grant awards to be released sometime in early August.

South Carolina Arts Assessment Program
The mission of the South Carolina Arts Assessment Program is to provide standards-based evidence that informs instruction and program development in the arts to increase student achievement and promote teacher growth.
This year we piloted a new Arts Education program survey for all schools to report out on the effects that the ACIG programs are having on program development and student achievement. The survey contains questions based on the following topics: Instructional Time and Planning, Teacher Certification, Arts Program Offerings, Funding and Budget, and Access to Arts Specific Professional Learning Opportunities. We look forward to sharing the results of this survey with the greater arts education community this fall.

Future Plans
Dear Arts Educators,
It is with deep respect and gratitude for the arts education community in South Carolina that I share with you my plans to retire on June 30, 2019.  I have had the privilege of spending a lifetime working with teachers, students, and the greater arts education community for the past three decades.  I want to thank you for supporting and working with me on important initiatives at the South Carolina Department of Education. Together we revised state standards for arts education, wrote the first design standards in the nation, wrote a mission and revised the South Carolina Arts Assessment Program, provided professional learning for hundreds of teachers, developed new summer arts institutes, and implemented grant programs that enhanced opportunities in the arts for thousands of students across our state.

I will remain accessible should you need me and plan to stay active in future arts education initiatives across our state. I treasure our Arts Education Community in South Carolina and the relationships that I have been able to build with many of you during this time.

Warm Regards,
Carrie

Make Plans NOW to See Vincent Van Gogh
Vincent Van Gogh is coming to the Columbia Museum of Art October 4, 2019 through January 12, 2020.
Van Gogh and His Inspirations is an original exhibition organized by the CMA that brings the work of one of the most beloved artists in the world to Columbia, South Carolina. The exhibit includes a variety of handpicked paintings and drawings that shaped his vision. From 2001 to 2010, as Steven Naifeh and Greg Smith researched their New York Times bestseller Van Gogh: The Life, they built a collection of over 30 works by artists who influenced Van Gogh's aesthetic thinking. These works join loans from 12 museums across the U.S. to explore the artistic evolution of Van Gogh through the lens of the artists who inspired him.
This exhibition also brings 12 paintings and drawings by Van Gogh, including an outstanding painting of poppy fields from the National Gallery of Art, a sensitive painting of a peasant weaving from The Boston Museum of Fine Art, and the world-famous self-portrait from the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art. Side-by-side with their inspirations, these works offer visitors a window into the mind of Van Gogh.
Your visit begins by going to https://www.columbiamuseum.org/learn/educators to arrange your field experience with our experienced Education and Engagement staff. Be sure to register to attend CMA's Evening for Educators on Wednesday, October 2, from 4:30-6:30 PM. Educators from across the state are invited to join the CMA for an evening of art, wine, and nibbles as they enjoy a sneak peek of our exhibitions. Chief Curator Will South will be on hand to contextualize Van Gogh and his place in history before previewing  Van Gogh and His Inspirations. Educators are invited to explore the exhibition galleries and learn about new tour scripts and try out lesson plan materials focusing on the latest exhibition and galleries. Attendees will receive documentation for professional development renewal credit.  The event is Free. Registration is required as space is limited.
Be sure to invite your administrators to attend School Administrators' Preview Night on Wednesday, September 18, 2019, from 5:30 pm-7:00 pm. Inspiring Art
Lucila Biscione is both a practicing artist and a teacher, instructing her pupils on the delicate art of papercutting.  In her new series, Biscione draws inspiration from her own dreams and life to craft these complex yet whimsical paper narratives.  By selecting monochromatic or achromatic color schemes, Biscione's work allows the viewer to better focus on the fantastically odd hybrid creatures and the story that has been carefully cut together.  To explore Biscione's work further, click HERE.
