Reminder - Help us improve the Town Crier, take our survey!

The High River Town Crier is the Town's bi-weekly newsletter that is meant to inform High River residents about what their local Government is doing for them.

The print issue of the Town Crier is inserted into every second Friday edition of the High River Times, and the Town also sends a digital version via email to subscribed users.

We are collecting feedback from residents about the Crier so that we can improve the content and distribution, and find out how to keep you better informed.

The Town currently includes information in the Crier about Council decisions, community events & programming, upcoming construction/road & facility closures, public open houses and community engagement opportunities.

Please take our short survey and let us know your thoughts. You can fill out the survey

The survey will be open until Nov. 30.

Vital Signs report indicates improvements in livability, health and wellbeing

2018 Vital Signs Grades
The 2018 High River Vital Signs® report is now available and it indicates strong improvements in the quality of life in High River, based on feedback collected from community members.

"We are pleased to present the second Vital Signs® report for High River and we couldn't have done it without all the amazing support from our citizens," says Kalie Mosig, research and content lead for the project. "Between May 10 and July 5, we launched the second Vital Signs® survey as an opportunity for residents to have a voice and to provide feedback on aspects of the community that need improvement or attention. It was also an opportunity to celebrate all the things that are positively contributing to life in High River."

The report features highlights from responses to a community-wide survey that 585 participants completed. Participants were asked to help grade the quality of life within the community. This information was combined with data from service providers, organizations and local experts to create a broad snapshot of the community. The average grade respondents gave was a B.

"We are seeing progress being made, and while our overall grade remains the same as the last report, there are strong indications of improvement in the areas of livability and health and wellbeing where our grades went up," adds Mosig. "This is a great start and we look forward to tracking High River's progress in future years."

"This report is an important tool for the Town, social profit groups, and local community organizations," says Mosig. "The last report contributed to some major new projects and services for the community and the Town also uses the report as a guideline to inform Council strategic planning."

One of the new projects and initiatives that was actioned by the 2016 report was the Foothills Community Counselling program.

"Participants from the 2016 survey indicated a need for counselling services and we can now report that 615 counselling sessions were completed at the new Foothills Community Counselling program from Jan. - Sept. 2018," says Mosig.

Vital Signs® is a community checkup conducted by community foundations across Canada that measures the vitality of our communities and identifies significant trends in a range of areas critical to quality of life.

High River's Vital Signs® was a collaborative process between Our High River and the
Town, with the Calgary Foundation and NRG Research Group.

Vital Signs will be a five-year initiative in High River with a full Vital Signs survey and report completed again in 2020. The complete report can be viewed online at highriver.ca/vital-signs.

The 2019 Winter Guide arrives Dec. 3 -  Register early for your community programs

The Town of High River has released the 2018/2019 Winter Parks, Recreation and Community Program Guide online for an early sneak peak of upcoming community programs, events and activities.

"We have some cool new programs that we are offering this winter and registration will officially open on Monday, December 3," says Jocelyn Edwards, community programmer with the Town. "Some of the new programs include Zumbini, Youth Yoga, and Silver Circuit fitness training."

Edwards explains Zumbini is Zumba for preschoolers (0-4yrs) and the program has become extremely popular in communities across Canada. For people who would like to try the program before registering, there is a free demo day listed on page 6 in the Guide.

"We are offering some other free demo classes this season," adds Edwards. "One is for Zumbini and there's also a demo for Youth Yoga and Yin Yoga for adults." (Pg. 7 and 10)
Edwards adds that offering free demos gives people a chance to try the class first and then register afterwards if they liked it.

"Although demo classes are free, we ask that you pre-register and bring a donation for the local foodbank," adds Edwards.

There are classes and programs available for seniors, adults, youth, families and pre-school-aged children. The guide also offers programming information for the Town's Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) and Parent Link Centre.

"One of the new classes for seniors is called Silver Circuit fitness training which involves weight training and balance building in a circuit-style class," explains Edwards. "Each week will have a different circuit that will challenge your balance, coordination and overall fitness."

Anyone interested in registering for programs is encouraged to do so online, or by calling (403) 652-4042.

Registrations will also be accepted in-person at the Bob Snodgrass Recreation Complex.
The full Guide is available on the Town's website at highriver.ca/program-registration

Print copies will also be available at the Recreation Complex, the Town Office, the High River Library and the Museum of the Highwood.
