Student scholarships part of Kansas City One Health Day
Five students were awarded scholarships by regional businesses for their One Health-related research. The scholarships were part of Kansas City One Health Day, an annual event organized by Kansas State University, BioKansas and BioNexus KC. It celebrates and spotlights the importance of the complex interrelationships of human, animal and environmental health to the general public. This year's theme was outsmarting antibiotic resistance and the event included a student poster competition.

Nearly 300 guests showed up at the Museum at PrairieFire for a SciFlix event on Nov. 16. Participants watched the movie "Outbreak," which was followed by a panel discussion on contagions featuring Nancy Jaax, former chief of the Pathology Division at the U.S. Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases, and Jerry Jaax, former associate vice president for research compliance and university veterinarian at Kansas State University. The event was a collaboration with the University of Kansas' Edwards Campus and K-State Olathe.

The Sensory and Consumer Research Center at K-State Olathe is seeking new participants for its database who are willing to share their opinions about new foods or products in focus groups or taste tests.
Most studies are conducted at K-State Olathe during lunchtime through the evening. Studies last typically no more than 35-40 minutes. Cash incentives are given to those who participate.

New Hire: Gary Anderson

Gary Anderson, D.V.M., Ph.D., joins the faculty team at K-State Olathe as the director of the International Animal Health and Food Safety Institute. In the new role, he is working to strengthen the animal health, food safety and food security research programs at the Olathe campus. He also is working to foster industry relationships that lead to joint research and industry-funded projects for workforce development, graduate students and faculty researchers at Kansas State University.

- Accelerating Health through 1Data, Feb. 7, 2019 -- This one-day conference focuses on a One Health approach to data sharing and brings together professionals from animal, human, and environmental health sectors to explore the ways in which data can be jointly used for mutually beneficial purposes, such as accelerating drug development, enhancing regulatory processes and decreasing animal testing. The speakers will discuss the 1Data platform for data sharing, local efforts for improving human and animal health using analytical tools and how collaboration can promote change resulting in enhancing the lives of both humans and animals. Around the campus
Four graduate students shared their master's and doctoral research projects with faculty and staff. Projects included a type of low-cost packaging that will keep locally grown spinach fresh and nutritious longer; a surrogate microorganism that could lead to fewer beef-related E. coli outbreaks; how a specific probiotic in the food of beef cattle could lead to safer beef; and how local food producers can grow more nutritious lettuce and tomatoes in larger quantities by filtering sunlight with plastic polyethylene film.
