   President's Message!
Greetings Volunteer Coordinators and Business Partners Coordinators ,
I hope you all are doing well and staying healthy. I know this time of year is typically incredibly busy with events; however, things here, as I am sure for many of you as well, are changing on a daily basis it seems. Communications with businesses and volunteers is key, even if we are keeping most of them at a remote distance for the time being. There will be an eventual return to normal even if the normal is a bit overhauled.
I wanted to take a few lines to introduce myself to you officially. I am the Manager over Partners in Education for Orange County Public Schools. This is my 4th year at the district office and 19th year in education. The first 15 years I was an elementary school teacher; my entire career was with Title I schools. I graduated from Eastern Kentucky University and my Masters is from IWU. In my non-work life, I am a proud military kid "brat", and grew up moving around the US and Germany. In downtime, I visit Disney, explore state parks, enjoy photography and spend time with nieces and nephews.
Horace Mann is sponsoring the Community Engagement of Volunteers Award at the Fall Leadership conference in November. More details below. Due Date will be August  28th.
We have a position that is open: Ex-Officio, this is someone who assists in planning of events and activities; it is not a position with full responsibilities like the board members. This is a great way to be involved. If you are interested, please let me know.
We want to hear from you! There are several ways to do that: connect with your regional representative, follow us on Facebook, or submit and share the great things happening in your district for submission in the newsletter! One of the meaningful ways to keep up-to-date is to join FAPE; information on how to join is included in this edition of the newsletter. Joining now will include the entire 2020-21 school year; the membership will not expire until May of 2021. You are able to sign up through September 2020.
Stay Well
Until Next Time,

Kathleen Wright

The Outstanding School Volunteer Award

Congratulations to all of the 2019-20 state Outstanding School Volunteer Award winners! This award is presented to school volunteers who have exhibited exceptional commitment to enhancing quality instruction for Florida's K-12 students. See the winners at this link

If your recognition events have been cancelled due to COVID-19, please let us know if you have alternate plans to recognize your state winners and all of your winners. Please send your plans to [email protected]. Those ideas will be shared with district volunteer coordinators. We are all in the same boat in uncharted waters and would love to hear your ideas.

Free Resources for Families & Teachers

In accordance with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance, schools throughout Florida and the United States are on extended breaks in an effort to curb the spread of COVID-19. The Florida Department of Education has compiled a list of free resources, offered by state and federal agencies, private companies, and non-profit organizations to help school districts, colleges, educators and families ensure continuity of learning during this time. How 30 Minutes a Week Can Change a Child's Life

Just the kind of story we need right now. Mentors and mentees are missing each other by now. Hopefully, they will be able to meet again soon. Both videos submitted by Michelle Roberge, District Volunteer Coordinator, from Pinellas County.
Best Practice Tip

Many of your business partners have been forced to shut down or have limited access. If you have restaurant  partners that are participating in pick-up or delivery, now is a good time to give them a shout out. Show them your support during this difficult time.
