Stunning Conversion for West Loop Library with Opportunity Fund Help
Funding for the West Loop's 'new' Chicago Public Library branch came about via private donations and the City's Neighborhood Opportunity Fund . Unlike new CPL branches in other parts of the City, this one at 118 N. Aberdeen Street is not new construction - it occupies an old two-story building once part of Oprah's Harpo Studios television production campus.

Click to read the Curbed Chicago article and view the library's interior. ( Curbed Chicago: New meets old in the SOM-designed civic space.Jay Koziarz.1/17/19 )
Chicago's Innovative Libraries
Two Chicago Public Library branches opened recently, combining a library with affordable and senior housing - the Independence Branch in Irving Park ( top photo ) at 4024 N. Elston, the other in Little Italy on Taylor Street.

The Independence Branch replaces the original structure destroyed by fire in 2015. Little Italy - formerly the Roosevelt Branch - has occupied several locations in the area since opening in the late 1800s. It was renamed and moved most recently from 1101 W. Taylor Street to its new digs at 1336 W. Taylor ( bottom photo ) Each offers programs including early learning play space, digital media space for teens, tutors, job search help, book clubs, and educational and cultural programming.

Great place to escape the snow and cold. Yelp reviewers praise CC's warmth and coziness, its cigar selections and as a place to enjoy some quiet time getting wired on caffeine via well-crafted espressos, lattes and some boozy java drinks.
Be sure to try the donuts!
