2016 Château Tour Saint-Christophe
Saint-Émilion, Bordeaux, France
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Since being purchased by Peter Kwok in 2012, this scenic estate has been on a massive upswing. Thanks to significant investment in both the vineyards and winery, the estate is now living up to its quite substantial potential. The critics have responded with big scores and gushing reviews.
Despite the enormous quality, Kwok has kept the price at an extremely reasonable level.
This 2016 is a powerful young wine that needs time in the glass to open up and reveal its full potential. O ver the course of a long evening with friends, our sample bottle displayed big, ripe black fruit flavors layered on top of prominent notes of cigar box, earthy minerals and firm, silky, tannins. The structured finish points to a long life. As good as it is drinking now, this wine really needs a decade in the cellar to fully hit its stride. Whatever quantity you buy, make sure to set aside at least half for long term cellaring - you will be well rewarded!
Awarding scores of 96, 94, 94 and 94 points, the critics totally flipped out over this one. The reviews are all very passionate and are all worth reading...
"This has a rich and ripe dark-fruit nose with a wealth of stony attraction and a lighter, floral edge. The palate has a very rich core of deeply ripe, fleshy fruit, framed in cedary oak. Really impressive clarity and web-like tannins. Superb finish. Try from 2023."
- 96 Points, James Suckling (2/3/2019)
"This incredibly beautiful estate was purchased by Peter Kwok, a Hong Kong-based financier, in 2012. The estate covers a tiny 6.5 hectares (some terraced) just down from Chateau Barde-Haut, and it remains one of the hidden gems in just about every vintage. The 2016 Chateau Tour Saint Christophe is another winner. Composed of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc that spent 18 months in 40% new French oak, this concentrated, structured 2016 is one for the cellar. It offers a deep ruby/purple color and a powerful array of black fruits, graphite, and earthy minerality as well as a hint of salinity and spring flowers. It has fine tannins (but plenty of them), beautiful balance, and a straight, focused texture, all pointing to the cellar being your friend. Hide bottles of 4-5 years and enjoy over the following 15-20. Tasted twice. Maturity 2023 - 2043."
- 94 Points, Jeb Dunnuck (2/28/2019)
"The 2016 Tour Saint-Christophe is made up of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. It was aged in 40% new, 40% one-year-old and 20% two-year-old oak for 18 months. Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, it sings of roses, chocolate-covered cherries, redcurrant jelly and cinnamon stick with touches of cigar box and forest floor. Big, full-bodied and richly fruited yet with great tension, it has a compellingly perfumed palate and gorgeous velvety texture with great persistence. Drink 2021 - 2044."
- 94 Points, Wine Advocate (11/30/2018)
"The 2016 Tour Saint Christophe has a wonderful, beautifully defined bouquet of blackberry, raspberry, crushed stone and hints of pressed flowers, all very focused and delineated. The palate is well balanced, with fine but quite firm tannins and well-judged acidity, and very persistent toward the finish. I appreciate the harmony and intensity of this Tour Saint Christophe. A wonderful Saint-Emilion from 'team Kwok'! Drink 2022 - 2048."
- 94 Points, Vinous - Neal Martin (1/2019)
The median online price is $40, and this serious Bordeaux is a smashing value at that amount. We have a good supply but, at today's price, this beauty will sell very fast.
A Whopping 98+ Points for 2016 Pavie Macquin!
2016 Château Pavie Macquin
Saint-Émilion, Bordeaux, France
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Pavie Macquin is one of the historic estates of St.-Émilion. In the blockbuster 2016 vintage, they crafted a real knockout.

"Possibly the finest vintage of this cuvée to date"

If you're a fan of powerful, extremely age-worthy Bordeaux, this one is very much worth checking out...

"Possibly the finest vintage of this cuvée to date, the 2016 Château Pavie Macquin comes from a cooler, later terroir on the upper plateau and checks in as 82% Merlot, 16% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in 50% new oak. This deep, inky-colored effort boasts a rock star bouquet of blackcurrants, black cherries, white truffle, graphite, and spice. Deep, rich, and powerful on the palate, yet also balanced, elegant, and seamless, with ultra-fine tannins, this seamless beauty needs a decade of cellaring and will keep for 4-5 decades. Maturity: 2029 - 2069."
- 98+ Points, Jeb Dunnuck (2/28/2019)

"The 2016 Pavie Maquin, matured in 50% new oak, has a rich, opulent bouquet that doles out layers of black cherry and boysenberry fruit, then finds more refinement and draws everything back once you've been seduced. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, grippy in the mouth, with a masculine, minerally finish and a saline aftertaste. Comparing two bottles, one at the London UGC and one at the château, I found that the latter displayed more detail and nuance. 14.5% alcohol. Drinking Window: 2022 - 2045."
- 95 Points, Vinous - Neal Martin (1/2019)

"Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2016 Pavie Macquin charges out of the glass with gregarious black cherries, warm blackberries and wild blueberries scents followed up by loads of red roses, baking spices, cedar chest and unsmoked cigars sparks plus a waft of wild thyme. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is an exercise in poise, revealing layer upon layer of cherries and berries flavors and tons of savory nuances, framed by firm yet exquisitely ripe tannins, finishing very long. Drink: 2021 - 2048."
- 96 Points, Wine Advocate (11/30/2018)

"This is very linear and driven with a precise and driven center palate. Full-bodied, tight and compact. Energetic and well formed. Give it at least five years."
- 97 Points, James Suckling (2/3/2019)

This is a magnificent Bordeaux with decades of life ahead of it.
