ESPN | June 10, 2019 -- Former Boston Red Sox slugger and Dominican star David Ortiz is out of surgery and doing "fine," according to his family, after he was shot Sunday at a club in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Ortiz's media assistant, Leo Lopez, told ESPN's Enrique Rojas that Ortiz is stable but still in intensive care. "Doctors say he is out of danger, but he is heavily sedated and will be in intensive care for the next 24 hours," Lopez said. Lopez, a veteran reporter, said the operation lasted six hours and was performed by three doctors, led by Dr. Abel Gonzalez. The team had to remove part of Ortiz's intestines and colon, as well as his gallbladder. Ortiz, 43, suffered liver damage. Authorities say Ortiz was ambushed by a man who got off a motorcycle and shot him in the back at nearly point-blank range around 8:50 p.m. local time Sunday at the Dial Bar and Lounge in Santo Domingo. The gunman was identified as Eddy Feliz Garcia, 25, according to police spokesman Col. Frank Duran Mejia. Dominican National Police Director Ney Aldrin Bautista Almonte said Garcia was captured and beaten by a crowd of people at the bar. Investigators are trying to determine whether Ortiz was the intended target.

NBA Cares Learn & Play Zone dedicated in Oakland
The NBA and the Golden State Warriors, in partnership with Kaiser Permanente and State Farm, opened a new NBA Cares Learn & Play Zone at Ira Jinkins Recreation Center in Oakland
on Thursday,
June 6.
Warriors players, including Draymond Green, NBA president Adam Silver, Oakland mayor Libby Schaaf and WNBA legends and league and NBPA executives unveiled four newly-renovated spaces. Participants joined students and local community partners for several activities: reading with therapy animals, a cooking and healthy eating activity, a science project, self-love dance class, music making and video games. The new Learn & Play Zone, which includes a multipurpose room, game room, study room, library and computer room and features new technology, books, furniture and decorations, will provide youth with a safe place to play and resources to help them explore educational interests. The dedication marks the 1,274th live, learn or play space created by the NBA family. Photo by Timothy Reynolds.
Draymond Green's infectious words brought smiles from Golden State Warriors president and chief operating officer Rick Welts and NBA commissioner Adam Silver. To view a photo album, visit our Facebook Page and be sure to LIKE us or visit www.ultimatesportsguide.net.

NBA's Fathers & Sons
|
Father's Day,
the NBA way
|
What better Father's Day gift than an NBA Championship, especially if it's a team led by your son. Turn the clock back-back to games in the driveway when Steph and Seth were learning to shoot from Dad and think about the meaning of Father's Day.
Remember one-on-one with your Pops in the driveway, blacktop, cul-de-sac, schoolyard, playground, gym and nerf ball basket from your toddler days. All of these battles were forever indented in my mind during the driveway hoops scene in The Great Santini between Robert DuVall and his son, played by Michael O'Keefe.
There have been many father-son combinations in NBA history, with more to come. Family trees are becoming more prevalent in sports. Too bad Wayne "Tree" Rollins didn't have a dad who played in the League. Just guessing that "Pops" Mensah-Bonsu had a Pops who helped him before he became "Pops."
Here are the seventy-six Father-Son combos to play in the NBA.

See if you can pick out those who became coaches. How many NBA champions in this group? How many MVPs? Hall of Famers?
Best Father-in-Law, Father-and-Son combo has to be Bruce Hale, Rick Barry and his NBA baller boys, Brent, Drew and Jon. If you add in Scooter, who played at Kansas and internationally with Canyon, the Barry's would have their own team. In my short time with the Golden State Warriors (1994-95), I tried to convince team owner Chris Cohan to hire Rick as coach and have his sons join him on the roster. Sadly, Cohan didn't buy the idea of The Barry Warriors.
Harvey Catchings, who played in the NBA, is the proud Dad of Tamika Catchings, a 15-year star with the WNBA's Indiana Fever where she was Rookie of the Year, a Champion, MVP, and an Olympic gold medal winner. Add in Cheryl Ford and her dad, Karl 'The Mailman' Malone and Natalie Williams and her dad, Nate. Father's Day for hoop star daughters too.
When I was with the Memphis Grizzlies we drafted Mike Conley as the fourth overall pick from Ohio State in 2007. He was represented by his dad, Olympic gold medal winning and triple jump legend Mike Conley, Sr. Go to YouTube and see his dunk from behind the free throw line in a celebrity dunk contest. How many of your dads can do that?
Happy Father's Day!

San Francisco Giants Report
Kids run the bases after the game between the San Francisco Giants and the Los Angeles Dodgers at Oracle Park on Sunday, June 9. Unfortunately the outcome was not in the G-Men's favor, as star pitcher Madison Bumgarner made one mistake to the Dodgers Max Muncy who deposited the ball in McCovey Cove for the only run of the game. Final score: Dodgers 1,

It's been a tough year for the San Francisco Giants. Dealing with inconsistent pitching and an offense which hasn't plated many runs, the Giants looked to emerge victorious against the struggling New York Mets when they traveled to Citi Field for a three-game series last week.
Tuesday's matchup went to extras as San Francisco allowed three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to fall behind, 3-2, before tying the score in the top of the seventh. The Giants circled six batters around the diamond in the top of the tenth inning for a 9-3 victory.
Mets starter Jason Vargas tossed a complete game shutout on Wednesday night, netting eight Ks on the way to a 7-0 thumping. New York put up seven runs again in Thursday's game, and though San Francisco scored, they fell, 7-3, as Giants starter Tyler Beede allowed six runs.
Having lost the series, 1-2, the Giants headed home for a weekend set against their division rival and first-place Los Angeles Dodgers.
On Friday Drew Pomeranz collected seven strikeouts over five shutout innings on his way to a 2-1 win over Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers. On Saturday the Dodgers' Corey Seager lit up at the plate, recording four RBIs and paving the way to a 7-2 defeat of the Giants.
Sunday's rubber match produced only five hits for each squad but Max Muncy's solo home run off of Madison Bumgarner was the winner as the Giants lost the game, 1-0, and the series, 1-2.
The homestand continues on Tuesday against the San Diego Padres for two games. On Friday the Milwaukee Brewers visit for a three-game set.

Oakland A's Report
A sweep tag by Oakland catcher Nick Hundley is too late as Houston center fielder Myles Straw scores during the fifth inning of the A's vs. Astros contest at the Oakland Coliseum on Sunday, June 2. The A's would lose in extras, 6-4, and extend their losing streak to five.
* * *
Coming off of a five-game losing streak after winning ten-in-a-row, Oakland looked to rejoin the win column as they hit the road to Anaheim last week for a three-game set against the Los Angeles Angels.
Ramón Laureano led the A's to a win in the first game as he blasted a homer and stayed on fire at the plate, contributing two RBIs in a 4-2 win. Liam Hendriks came in to earn the save without allowing a run -- a sign of relief for A's fans, who have been troubled by erratic pitching
at the end of games.
Back at .500 heading into Wednesday, the A's hoped to climb the AL West ladder and back into second place. However, they were dealt a 10-9 loss when Lou Trivino took the mound in the ninth inning and allowed the fatal tenth run as the Angels' Dustin Garneau knocked a double to seal the deal. In Thursday's rubber matchup, Oakland starter Mike Fiers' strong outing, as well as seven runs, earned the A's a 7-4 victory to take the series.
On Friday in Arlington, Texas, Marcus Semien led Oakland to a 5-3 win over the Rangers as he ripped two jacks and went four-for-five at the plate with four RBIs, an MLB-best batting performance on the day.
On Saturday the A's and Rangers started the day by making up a game which had been postponed from April. Texas took the first game, 10-5, and the A's fell again in the second game, 3-1.
Oakland evened the series at two games apiece on Sunday afternoon, as Khris Davis and Matt Olson both hit bombs to back up Frankie Montas' ten-strikeout start.
A 4-3 record for the week was somewhat disappointing for Oakland, who now sit at 33-33 on the season and remain in third place in the AL West, two games behind the Rangers. The A's visit the Rays in Tampa Bay on Monday for three games before heading home to play the Seattle Mariners in a three-game weekend set at the Coliseum starting Friday night.

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- The San Jose Earthquakes and FC Dallas played to a 2-2 draw on Saturday afternoon at Avaya Stadium. The draw extended the Quakes' unbeaten streak to four and they have dropped just one of their last nine (4-1-4). The result puts San Jose in a tie on points for the seventh and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.
The Earthquakes overcame an early deficit to take a 2-1 lead in the second half
on goals by Chris Wondolowski and Magnus Eriksson. Wondolowski has now tallied eight goals in his last four matches, a feat only three other players have achieved since 2008. FC Dallas was able to equalize in the 65th minute and force the two teams to settle for a point apiece.
The Earthquakes remain in San Jose to face Sacramento Republic FC in the Fourth Round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday, June 11 (7:15 p.m. PT; ESPN+). San Jose will look to advance to the Round of 16 for the third time in the last five years.

Sonoma Raceway's 50th anniversary book cover
SONOMA, Calif. (June 6, 2019) -- Stock car racing in Sonoma dates back to June of 1969, just months after the raceway opened for business. Sonoma Raceway will celebrate 50 years of racing in wine country during the Toyota/Save Mart 350 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series event,
June 21-23, including a number of highlights for race fans during NASCAR's only stop in Northern California.
Some of the 50th annniversary highlights slated for the Toyota/Save Mart 350
on June 21-23 include:
New Course, New Challenge
The Toyota/Save Mart 350 will return to Sonoma Raceway's original 12-turn, 2.52-mile road course for the first time since 1997. Highlighted by the infamous 'Carousel' turn, no current Cup Series drivers have raced on this configuration in a Cup Series car. Notably, Kevin Harvick competed on the 12-turn circuit in a Southwest Series car in 1995, and Kyle Busch did so in a Legends car. The last winner on the full road course was Mark Martin.
Sonoma Raceway Launches 50th anniversary Book
To commemorate its 50 years history, Sonoma Raceway has released a limited-edition
50th anniversary book. The photo-filled memoir chronicles the raceway's history over five decades, including its tumultuous early years, emergence on the national racing scene and transformation following its purchase by Speedway Motorsports, Inc. in the mid-1990s. The book includes highlighted sections on the raceway's modernization in the late 1990s and its community involvement. The $30 book will be available at souvenir stands throughout the facility, as well as at Wine Country Motorsports in the main paddock.

Women want to play Basketball in adulthood too! Friends Rita Forte and Amanda Lesky realized they were both passionate about playing basketball with other women after they graduated college and found few places to play. So in 2015 they created Women's All B-Ball. The mission of Women's All B-Ball is to provide opportunities for women to play basketball recreationally
and competitively as adults.
We are crowdfunding to raise $15,000!
We are in our fifth year of operation and the number of women in our community keeps climbing. It is clear that Women's All B-Ball's mission is a huge need that should continue and, more importantly, grow. We will use the money we raise directly for this mission: locations and facility rentals; tournament expenses; equipment; expand future opportunities to play and added programming; become an official non-profit 501(c)3 organization.
People can donate at: ifundwomen.com starting June 25. End Date: July 31.

Sports Prep Star -- Chris Santiago
De La Salle-Concord - Baseball - Senior
Chris Santiago, the Saint Mary's College-bound infielder, closed out a stellar Spartans career in style. In his final high school at-bat, Santiago belted a two-run homer in the sixth inning of the Spartans' 10-1 defeat of Heritage-Brentwood in the North Coast Section Division I championship game. The win completed a 28-1 season for De La Salle and delivered the program its fourth straight NCS crown. Santiago was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI in the victory. He finished the season batting .407 with team-bests in RBI (38) and doubles (13). He was also second on the team with 35 hits. The third baseman also served as the team's top closer, earning five saves in six scoreless appearances. Photo:
