On January 27, 12U NIHL 1 hosted the successful event, "GET THE RED OUT" for one of their teammates, Nathan Pleva, and Pediatric Congenital Heart Disease.
Over 200 t-shirts and 100 raffle tickets were sold at the event and over $4000 was raised for the Pleva family and Pediatric Congenital Heart Disease.
12U NIHL A1 played against Evanston Wildkits on that day. The Wildkits kindly made special bracelets in honor of Nathan, and raised over $200. Thank you to the Wildkits and everyone that helped make this event successful.
Nathan's surgery was successful and his recovery is going very well. Nathan is planning to go back to school next week and gradually getting back to his normal routine. We hope to welcome Nathan back on ice very soon.

Tip #17 The Importance of Keeping Things Simple
Hello Goalies!
It is now the end of the season and we are ready for playoffs! For those that did not make playoffs, I wish you the best of luck with your final games. Hold on to the positives and make sure to focus on yourself and what you need to do better in order to make the final push for next season. During this time of the year many goalies including players can fall into bad habits and end up going through the motions due to a long season, especially if you had a lot of highs and lows. Do not over think, keep it simple. The best hockey players keep things simple.
For goalies it's all about angle and depth, get into the shooting lane first then attack the shot by challenging the shooter and holding the top of your crease. You cover 80% of the net just by getting into the shooting lane. If you watch the best goaltenders in the game today it is all about positioning. I highly recommend looking up Philadelphia Flyers and Los Angles Kings net minders, Hart and Campbell. Their positioning is what keeps their team in a position to win. When a goal gets scored against you, you need to ask yourself two questions. Was I square to the puck? Was I challenging the shooter? Many times goalies think its their glove hand that didn't react but instead its because they were too deep in their net and didn't hold their crease. Goalies job is to make the first save and not to over think it. Attack the shooting lane and get your angle then adjust your depth to take away the shot. Eyes move first, always be square and lead with your stick. I wish everyone the best of luck on their final stretch

Coaches' Corner - Seventeen Books That All Athletes Should Read
Knowledge is power, even on the ice. For any athlete to develop, one must develop every aspect of their being including one's physical stature, competitive edge, and mental toughness. One of the best ways to develop mentally is to read. The great thing about books is that they give an in-depth perspective on a diversity of parallel aspects that are found in all of sports. As fans, we are always in awe when watching professionals compete and many of these book allow you as a fan or athlete to step into their shoes and see the world through their eyes.
Seventeen Books That All Athletes Should Read is an online article, published by Spongecoach website, that reviews a diverse collection of well vetted books centered on sports. I can confirm that the books that I have read from this list are great and I can image the rest are equally as awesome. The list does cover a great range in topics, perspectives, and sports. I encourage any athlete, coach or parent to check out one or more of these books this post season. It is always great to learn and expand our intellect and knowledge. The books reviewed are as follows:

The Brave Athlete by Dr. Simon Marshall (Mental Toughness)
Hockey Tough by Saul L. Miller (Hockey)
The Phenomenon: Pressure, The Yips, and the Pitch That Changed My Life by Rick Ankiel (Baseball)
