January 2018

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

February 16, 2018 is the beginning of the Year of the Dog according to the lunar calendar. People born in the Year of the Dog are known to be loyal and honest, but they can also be stubborn and "dog"matic!

Hello,

I hope everyone is staying safe, warm, and healthy this winter. I am looking forward to seeing you at the Museum in 2018. We have some very exciting programs coming up, some of which did not make it into our brochure.

We are also collaborating with many area organizations to bring you quality programming at no cost to you (do I sound like PBS?), because I want to share with you our rich Chinese and Chinese American cultural heritage and history.

So check out our upcoming events and mark them on your calendar, and we'll see YOU at the Museum!
Monthly Spotlight

Each month we feature a board member, staff member, or volunteer in our Monthly Spotlight segment. This month, we present Board Member Andrea Stamm.

Andrea Stamm serves on the Museum's Board of Directors, their Exhibition Committee, and the Nominating Committee. She has given lectures on the Chinese participation in the two Chicago World Fairs as well as on Chinese jade.

Andrea's professional training as a librarian (she retired from Northwestern University in 2013) prepared her for her current role of Collections Manager at the Museum. In this role, she documents the donation process for new donations of objects, documents, photographs, etc., then determines the best method of permanently storing them using best practices for their preservation, including photographing the object, and cataloging it in our online database.

We asked Andrea what brought her to the Museum:
"I came to the Chinese-American Museum as a longtime Sinophile. Growing up in the New York suburbs, my favorite destination in New York City was their Chinatown. I always loved Chinese food, and when I moved to Chicago after college, I took a class in Chinese art history. That began my true love affair with 'things Chinese.'"
Past and Upcoming Events

January 2018

On January 16, 2018, the Museum hosted an exciting melding of Chinese classical music and jazz thanks to a collaboration with the Chicago Jazz Philharmonic. Check it out on Youtube!

See our  Feature Artist  segment below for more information on one of our favorite musicians, Kerry Leung (second from the right on pipa)!

On January 27, 2018, the Museum presented an encore screening of "Honor and Duty: The Mississippi Delta Chinese" in collaboration with the Chinese American Bar Association and the Chinese American Citizens Alliance, which had an 88% attendance rate!

The screening was followed by a very engaging Q&A session with filmmaker E. Samantha Cheng on the making of the documentary and her latest project, "Chinese American World War II Veteran Congressional Gold Medal Act." The Congressional Gold Medal Bill, introduced in May 2017, S.1050 Duckworth & Cochran/H.R.2358 Ed Royce (R-CA) and Ted Lieu (D-CA), and co-sponsored by US Rep. Danny Davis, is a bi-partisan bill that authorizes a Congressional Gold Medal (CGM) to the Chinese American Veterans of World War II in recognition of their dedicated service.

Our Mission

The mission of the Chinese-American Museum of Chicago - Raymond B. & Jean T. Lee Center (CAMOC) is to promote the culture and history--through exhibitions, education, and research--of Chinese-Americans in the Midwest. The museum building, formerly the Quong Yick Co., is located in Chicago's Chinatown, at 238 West 23rd Street in Chicago. The Museum opened to the public on May 21, 2005. After a devastating fire in September of 2008, the Museum was closed for renovation and reopened in 2010.

CAMOC is governed by the Board of Directors of the Chinatown Museum Foundation (CMF), a 501(C)(3) non-profit corporation located in Chicago, Illinois.
