Welcome to our Cancer Prevention and Control (CPC) quarterly newsletter. The goal in producing this newsletter is to keep our members informed and involved. We are highlighting opportunities for collaborations, new funding opportunities, new grants and promotions, new personnel, and upcoming seminars and events. We always welcome your suggestions and contributions for future issues. 
Spotlight On
Please welcome our newest CPC Members
Angela Fong, PhD , was recently appointed as an Instructor of Medicine within the Division of Medical Oncology and Section of Population Science at Rutgers Cancer Institute and Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.  Dr. Fong comes to us from Queen’s University; Kingston, Ontario, Canada where she had a Postdoctoral Appointment in Knowledge Translation and Health Promotion.  At the Rutgers Cancer Institute, Dr. Fong’s primary responsibility will be the establishment of her own research program focused on enhancing physical activity and health behaviors among cancer survivors using novel e-health approaches.
Racquel (Kelly) Kohler, PhD , was recently appointed as an Instructor in the Department of Health Behavior, Society and Policy, Rutgers School of Public Health and Rutgers Cancer Institute, Cancer Health Equity and Engagement. She recently completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard T. H Chan School of Public Health and the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. Her research interests are cancer health disparities, dissemination and implementation science, and the prevention and control of cervical cancer. At the Rutgers Cancer Institute, Dr. Kohler’s primary responsibility will be the establishment of her own research program focused on community-based, multi-level interventions and implementation science in socioeconomically disadvantaged and underserved racial/ethnic populations in New Jersey. She will also continue her cervical cancer research in Botswana, South Africa.
Michelle Jeong, PhD , was recently appointed as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Health Behavior, Society and Policy, Rutgers School of Public Health, and Rutgers Center for Tobacco Studies. She earned her PhD in Communication from the University of Pennsylvania in 2016. She completed her first post-doctoral fellowship at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 2018, and a second post-doctoral fellowship at Rutgers Center for Tobacco Studies in 2019. Her work focuses on the impact of e-cigarette marketing on youth’s e-cigarette perceptions and use.
Jaya Satagopan, PhD , was recently appointed as a Professor in the Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology, Rutgers School of Public Health. Her work focuses on statistical genetics and genomics, specifically on cost-effective study designs, risk modeling strategies, and the evaluation of gene-exposure interactions with applications in cancer epidemiology and tumor biology studies. She looks forward to establishing the Center for South Asian Quantitative Health and Education at the Rutgers School of Public Health with her colleagues to address health disparities faced by South Asian communities in New Jersey, the United States, and the world.
Ollie Ganz, DrPH, MSPH , was recently appointed as an Instructor in the Department of Health Behavior, Society, and Policy, Rutgers School of Public Health, and Rutgers Center for Tobacco Studies. Dr. Ganz is a public health researcher with training in tobacco control, health communication, and health behavior. Her research is primarily focused on identifying predictors of tobacco use among high-risk groups, with a specific emphasis on the role of marketing in both the promotion and prevention of tobacco use. She has worked on the development and evaluation of several, large-scale anti-smoking campaigns, including This Free Life, a campaign designed to prevent tobacco use among lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender young adults. Dr. Ganz is currently a Health Scientist at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Wei Vivian Li, PhD , was recently appointed as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology, Rutgers School of Public Health. Dr. Li’s research aims to uncover hidden information in large-scale genomic data, with a major focus on statistical genomics. In particular, her career emphasizes developing practical statistical methodology that can be applied to a variety of public health challenges. She's currently modeling both tissue-level and single-cell genomic data and investigating various applications in practical biological and biomedical questions.

Sharon L. Manne, PhD , Associate Director, Cancer Prevention, Control and Population Science, working with her co-investigator, David Kissane, PhD , (right) Professor, University of Notre Dame Australia, and Cabrini Health and Monash Health Psycho-Oncology, Monash University, presented findings as part of the Intimate Partner Relationships Across Gender and Illness Continua: Intimacy and Resilience Models Section at IPOS World Congress 2019 in Banff, Canada. Dr. Manne's presentation was entitled “Relationship Intimacy Processes and Couple Coping with Prostate Cancer” and Dr. Kissane's presentation entitled "Effects of Intimacy-enhancing therapy in couples in the prostate cancer setting."

Winn, MD, University of Illinois at Chicago, to present under the Population Science section at the Big Ten Cancer Research Consortium Summit at the Big Ten Conference Headquarters in Chicago, Illinois. Several faculty members from the Rutgers Center for Tobacco Studies-RBHS have provided their expertise through interviews and op-eds regarding the recently reported vaping-linked illness outbreak.


Teenagers are “uniquely susceptible to addiction” largely because the parts of their brains that are still developing are responsible for impulse control, responding to peer pressure, and understanding long-term consequences, said Kevin R.J. Update from the Population Science Research Support Shared Resource

The Population Science Research Support shared resource works with researchers to provide expertise and technical support in the following areas:

(1) Subject recruitment (contact subjects, collect data, conduct interviews);
(2) setting-up online surveys in DatStat, RedCap, Qualtrics and training staff to administer them; and
(3) setting-up infrastructure for longitudinal and randomized trial recruitment on DatStat and RedCap and training staff.
