What is the future direction for your early childhood research?
"My primary research focus is in early speech-language development and delay with long-range goals that include the advancement of evidence-based, effective assessment and intervention for young children whose communication delays are likely to persist and/or worsen without early childhood intervention, including infants at high-risk for later autism diagnosis and toddlers late to begin speaking, known as late talkers."
Are there any new research projects or activities you are starting on now?
"Right now, I have three main avenues to my research agenda: (1) Continuing the Early Diagnostic Signs of Autism interdisciplinary project with Anastasia Kyvelidou (Creighton University, Physical Therapy Department), in which we are examining early motor and communication behaviors associated with infants at high risk for an eventual diagnosis of ASD; (2) ongoing work with colleagues at UNO regarding the development and use of screening instruments targeting play behaviors and early language skills; and (3) building on my previous work to address the clinical challenges of assessing and diagnosing speech sound disorders prior to the age of 3."
Why is early childhood research important?
"Early delays in speech and/or language development may have long-standing negative effects on later communication and pre-literacy development. I’m a big fan of early intervention and have seen what a huge positive impact it can have on young children with communication deficits and their families. However, our prevention, assessment and intervention practices need to be evidence-based for maximum effectiveness. This is where clinically relevant early childhood research comes in."

NAECR Knowledge series begins with Box training
More than 20 people attended the inaugural NAECR Knowledge event Nov. 14 at the Nebraska Union — in person and via video conferencing — to learn more about Box features and data security.
Information Technology Services’ Ranelle Maltas, technology training services associate, and Cheryl O’Dell, security awareness and incident response manager, outlined some of Box’s most useful features and discussed how to share secure data using the collaborative file storage tool.
NAECR Networking and NAECR Knowledge are an ongoing series of networking and training events designed to enhance early childhood research across the NU system.
For more information on NAECR activities, contact Sommer Fousek, project coordinator, at 402-472-3743, or

Student Research Opportunities
The
Student Research Opportunities
website enables NU faculty to advertise opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students seeking work experience in early childhood research.
Students can browse available positions and filter them by campus location, academic level (i.e., graduate or undergraduate), position type (e.g., assistantship, paid, volunteer) and the age group being researched.
Postings automatically expire after six months, or faculty can select a specific expiration date.
