Dr. Kelly Miller Retires

Assistant Professor of Clinical Sciences Kelly Bryant Miller, D.C., ’88, has retired from the Sherman College faculty. Miller retired at the end of summer quarter. She began her relationship with Sherman College as a student in 1985; following graduation, she practiced in Ireland before returning to the U.S. to open a practice in Greenville, SC, which she has maintained since 1990.

That same year, Miller also became a member of Sherman College’s Chiropractic Health Center faculty. She was quickly promoted to director of interns and then to dean of chiropractic health care services in 1994. In 1997, she stepped down as dean and has remained a faculty member of the college ever since.

“Sherman College appreciates Dr. Kelly Miller’s many years of service and commitment as a faculty member, as well as her support as a Regent, and we wish her the very best in her retirement,” said Vice President for Academic Affairs Joe Donofrio, D.C., ’94, A.C.P.

Miller plans to pursue more opportunities in equine chiropractic and art and antique restoration. She is particularly excited about working with her three sons to create and patent healthcare product s . See photos here .
Dr. Les Wise Retires

Professor of Clinical Sciences Leslie Wise, D.C., is taking his “second” retirement from Sherman College after diligently serving the college for 44 years. Wise graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic in 1974. That same year, he started his practice in Spartanburg and began working for Sherman College. Wise taught in the clinical sciences department and has served in many leadership capacities through the years, including serving as dean of clinical sciences for 10 years.

In 1982, he was appointed to the South Carolina Board of Chiropractic Examiners and retired as chairman in 1990. Wise was a founding member of Straight Chiropractic Academic Standards Association, served on numerous National Board of Chiropractic Examiners (NBCE) test committees, and worked with the NBCE to produce items for the Boundaries exam. Sherman College presented Wise with the Service to the Profession Award at this year’s Lyceum.

“Dr. Wise taught or interacted with every single student who walked the halls of Sherman College,” said Vice President for Academic Affairs Joe Donofrio, D.C., ’94, A.C.P. “He has done and seen a lot and has the stories to prove it. We thank him for his years of service and commitment to the college and the profession. We wish him the very best.”

ROAR News:
Gearhart Receives Scholarship

The Reach Out And Recruit (ROAR) program is designed to connect with doctors in the field who are passionate about building the profession by promoting Sherman College to interested prospects. As a perk of the program, any ROAR doc who sends a qualifying student who enrolls in the chiropractic program has the opportunity to offer a one-time ROAR scholarship in his/her name or practice name. We thank Dr. Bryn Gillow, 00, for referring current student Travis Gearhart. Sherman College President Dr. Edwin Cordero presented Travis with his award, as seen in the photo above. This scholarship was named the "Life is Good Scholarship" in honor of Dr. Gillow's practice.

Emily Wood, program manager, stated that she has enjoyed the ROAR relaunch to better serve members and prospective students. “It is an exciting time to witness the program grow, attract and recognize members, and offer financial support for future Sherman College students,” she said. Wood asks all chiropractors who are not currently active in the 2018 ROAR relaunch program to please register for the ROAR program and share your passion for building the future of the chiropractic profession. Hear what ROAR members have to say about the program.
Ambassador Spotlight:

Education:   Exercise Science/ Pre-Med from Indiana University

Activities/Hobbies:   Yoga, playing with my sweet dog and two kitties

Why Chiropractic: I grew up in a medical model and had been accepted into a physician assistant program after graduation. I randomly met a Sherman College student at the pool one day who told me the wonderful philosophy and science behind chiropractic. Having worked as a CNA, I knew the medical model was flawed, and I was thrilled to hear an outlet to help people that actually helped them and did not simply cover up symptoms. I knew this was my calling, and I could not be more excited to be a part of such a wholesome, positive profession.

Why Sherman College:   After being called to chiropractic, I began touring schools to see my options. Other schools may have had newer facilities or a bigger campus but something about Sherman just felt right. Every interaction I had made me feel like I was at home.

Kappa Chi Community Service Club Hosts Fundraiser for Spartanburg County Sheriff's Department

Committed to making a difference in the local area, Sherman College’s Kappa Chi Community Service Club completes at least one service project each quarter. The club recently hosted a fundraiser for one of Spartanburg County’s most utilizied task forces, its K-9 unit.

Club President Craig A. Bryan III offered thanks to RJ Rockers for hosting the event. The organization sold raffle tickets for a Yeti cooler and for a Sherman package, which included four free visits to the Chiropractic Health Center and some Sherman gear. Money was also raised through RJ Rockers donating $1 per specific beverage that was sold that night. Students also represented their quarter or club during a cornhole tournament at the event. The turnout was a huge success, and the community showed great support. “It is truly a blessing and an honor to have the K-9 unit serve and protect our community,” Bryan said.

The club collected $750 from the raffle and cornhole tournament. Aside from the Kappa Chi Community Service Club, other contributing organizations included interns at the Health Center as well as the Animal Chiropractic Club.
Student Russell Goff Represents Sherman College at WCCS
submitted by Russell Goff, DC2B

This summer, I was honored to represent Sherman College in Johannesburg, South Africa, at a global gathering of chiropractic students. The World Congress of Chiropractic Students (WCCS) is a student-run organization whose purpose is to “advance and unite the global chiropractic profession through inspiration, integrity and leadership.” The WCCS truly is a unique organization within chiropractic where the diversity of the profession is not only represented but expressed.

Each year, 27 chiropractic schools from around the world send delegates to the Annual Global Meeting (AGM). The student representatives come together, uniting the profession under the banner of chiropractic, and discuss the challenges facing chiropractic and healthcare. A hundred student delegates representing more than 20 chiropractic colleges from four continents met at the 2018 AGM.

Delegates representing the full diversity of the chiropractic profession respectfully worked through differences in opinion, philosophy, and scope of practice. It was an honor for me to represent Sherman College, the principle of vertebral subluxation, and the chiropractic philosophy created and developed by D.D. and B.J. Palmer.

During discussion on the Congress floor, I was very intentional in how and when I spoke up. There were several times that I would begin my point by first laying down a simple philosophical truth before sharing my point. It was one of these comments during the first day that earned me the nickname “Mr. Philosophy.”

The Higher Education Act and its Impact at Sherman College

A few months ago, we shared information with you regarding reauthorization of the Higher Education Act (HEA) and the Republicans’ proposed bill known as the Prosper Act. This particular bill is notably controversial with stakeholders in the higher education community due to its provisions which would eliminate the Grad PLUS Loan Program, Federal work-study for graduate level students, and Public Loan Forgiveness Program for student loan borrowers. While experts claim it is highly unlikely that HEA reauthorization will occur this year, just before the August break, Democrats released their own proposal called the Aim Higher Act. Student Affairs Offers Activities
to Support Student Success

Juggling the demands of classes and a private life can leave students drained. Realizing that very real threat to student success led to the creation of mental health awareness activities on campus that are designed to reduce students’ stress and help them relax.

Student Affairs’ most recent activity, held in August, featured a visit from the local company Pure Barre Spartanburg, which offered a class to students to promote physical activity, mindfulness and a healthy lifestyle.

Twelfth-quarter student Sarah Kalani Wharton said she was excited to see the organization on campus, saying it offers a safe and effective, full-body workout that helps her stay strong. “About halfway through the program at Sherman, I realized that the time I had spent sitting in a chair during class and at home while studying had made my mind strong, but my body very weak, despite being an athlete my entire life,” she explained.

“Each time I went to a class, I experienced small wins in strength and noticed a physical change in posture. After going for several months, I feel that I am stronger, I hold my adjustments longer, and that I am more capable of being the best chiropractor that I can be.”
Mobile FAFSA Form
Now Available

Great news for prospective and current Sherman College students: Federal Student Aid recently announced that students now have two ways to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form; a redesigned fafsa.gov website and a mobile app. Federal Student Aid states that “these two improvements will make it easier for students and parents to access and complete the FAFSA form on the device that works best for them, with particular focus on improving the experience on mobile devices.”

The announcement, posted on July 24, further states that “parts of the fafsa.gov website have been redesigned so that the site pages will fit the screen size and shape of any device, including desktop or laptop computers and mobile devices, such as a smartphone or tablet.” The first portion of the website redesign allows students and parents more ease in completing the FAFSA form on a mobile device. Read more about key features of the redesigned website .

The changes described above are only applicable to initial and renewal applications; additional fafsa.gov functions will be redesigned in subsequent phases. This new convenience will be one more way that Sherman College students can utilize their school-issued iPads.
