"It is easy to let up on the spiritual program of action and rest on our laurels. We are headed for trouble if we do, for [food] is a subtle foe. We are not cured of [compulsive eating]. What we really have is a daily reprieve contingent on the maintenance of our spiritual condition. Every day is a day when we must carry the version of God's will into all of our activities."

NEW OA LITERATURE FOR SALE!

Body Image, Relationships, and Sexuality:
Personal Journeys to Recovery in Overeaters Anonymous
... is a first-of-its-kind collection of member stories about how our disease can be deeply intertwined with the most intimate parts of our lives - our deeply held traumas, personal relationships, and changing identities. In this book, OA members share openly and honestly about their journeys from unfulfilled - even shattered - existences to lives overflowing with the acceptance, freedom, and serenity found by working and living OA's Twelve Step program of recovery. Find hope as you read in Body Image, Relationships, And Sexuality how these OA members became truly "Happy, joyous, and free."

If you'd like to order a book, please either:
  • write a check for $12 to Ocean & Bay Intergroup;
  • OR put $12 cash in an envelope with your name on it;
  • THEN Email Kara at [email protected] to make arrangements for contact-less pick up
Step Nine:
We made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.
(Spiritual Principle: Love)

This step has freed us from the shackles of our past mistakes in a miraculous way. Our lives are changed, our broken relationships mended, and the resentment that poisoned our hearts for years is washed away.

In making amends, we need to acknowledge the specific harm we've done, apologize, make appropriate restitution, and change our behavior toward them in the future. Before starting out to make amends, we must let go of any expectations of how others will receive us...We cannot control how others receive our amends. They have the right to hold grudges against us the rest of their lives if they choose to. They don't owe us forgiveness, and we don't need their forgiveness to complete Step Nine and recover from compulsive eating. Our only job is to clear off our side of the street by doing whatever we can to right our wrongs. Having done so, we no longer need to feel any guilt or anger about these situations.

Tradition Nine:
OA, as such, ought never be organized, but we may create service boards or committees directly responsible to those they serve.
(Spiritual Principal: Structure)

What this Tradition encourages us to do is remain as free as possible from the bureaucracy that tends to form around organizations. In such instances, the organization and administration takes on a life of its own and obscures the real purpose of the group. Everything we do in OA is geared to our primary purpose of carrying our message of recovery based on spiritual Principles. Taking care of group business is very important. Still, as little meeting time as possible is spent electing service officers, voting on issues, organizing events, or making reports. Instead, we concentrate on sharing our experience, strength, and hope with each other and on studying the Steps and Traditions.
