The Collect:
Father in heaven, who at the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan proclaimed him your beloved Son and anointed him with the Holy Spirit: Grant that all who are baptized into his Name may keep the covenant they have made, and boldly confess him as Lord and Savior; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting, Amen.

This week’s lessons: Isaiah 42:1-6; Psalm 29:1-4, 10-11; Acts 10:34-43; Matthew 3:13-17

Acts of the Apostles
Then Peter began to speak to them: “I truly understand that God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. You know the message he sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ—he is Lord of all.” Acts 10:34-36
The Gospel | Matthew 3:13-17

Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him. John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now; for it is proper for us in this way to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented. And when Jesus had been baptized, just as he came up from the water, suddenly the heavens were opened to him and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased.”

From the Vestry: Annual Meeting, Sunday, January 19

Prior to the Annual Meeting, parishioners are invited to enjoy brunch following the 10 a.m. service on January 19. The Senior Warden will call the Annual Meeting to order at approximately 11:40. The first order of business will be the election of new vestry members, Synod delegates and alternates, and Deanery delegates and alternates. Nominations are still being accepted and will be accepted from the floor at the meeting.

Reports from ministry leaders will be distributed in a booklet to those in attendance with some leaders offering personal comments in addition to the written reports. Hopefully, the meeting will adjourn no later than 1 p.m. Child care will be available for families with children.

Velma Schmidt will be coordinating brunch arrangements. She is asking parishioners to bring a brunch casserole, side dish, or dessert to share. Also, volunteers will be needed for setup and cleanup. She will be contacting parish women regarding food contributions and kitchen assistance. Please let her know if you are willing to assist. Her phone number is in the parish directory but also posted on the parish bulletin board.

We hope to see you at this year's Annual Meeting!

Greetings from Father Shane Spellmeyer to St. Andrew's!

“A Very Merry 12 th day of Christmas and New Year’s greetings"

This welcome message came from former parishioner and seminarian Shane Spellmeyer who is now a priest serving at Trinity Episcopal Church in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

"Trinity is treating me well. Christmas was both exhausting and incredibly fulfilling. I'm glad that God has lead me to this place and to these people.

As winter presses on I'm becoming aware of how far away I am from just about everything that's not the Upper Peninsula, and so I'm beginning to plan a short vacation to step away for a moment before we journey into Lent….

I look forward to hearing all about St. Andrew's and Father Ben's presence among you.
Blessings to all of St. Andrew's."

Yours in Christ,
Shane
Highlights of the January 8 Vestry Meeting

Senior Warden Liz Edwards conducted her final vestry meeting Wednesday and expressed appreciation for Fr.Thorpe's time with the parish and excitement regarding the arrival of Fr. Hankinson February 1. Items discussed and decisions made at the meeting included the following:
  • Following brunch after the 10 a.m. service on January 19, the Annual Meeting will be conducted by the Senior Warden;
  • Velma Schmidt will work out arrangements with ECW for the January 19 brunch;
  • Four parishioners have expressed interest in running for vestry slots;
  • Jane Weingartner has received nearly all ministry reports and will be putting the Annual Report together next week with the help of office volunteers;
  • The Annual Report will be distributed at the Annual Meeting but also will be sent via email to parish members;
  • Bill Schafer is preparing information on possible paving of the gravel lot for the Annual Meeting;
  • Parish Warden Walter Bohn reported building updates and reminded the vestry that replacement of parish hall carpeting and repair of the commercial dishwasher were still on the parish wish list;
  • Discussion of the problems with the commercial dishwasher, as well as its value in handling dishes for large events, were discussed and and research will be done to determine the cost of repairing versus replacing the unit;
  • Funds were approved to purchase a desk for the Rector's office;
  • Treasurer Riley Atwood shared progress on the transition to Aplos software, reported that the Finance Committee will meet January 12 after church, and indicated he would be resigning as treasurer once the Aplos software was all set up.
  • The next Vestry meeting will be February 12 with Fr. Hankinson presiding and newly elected vestry members in attendance.
Our Miss Travous

As noted in last week’s article, women were not admitted to full voting membership on St. Andrew’s vestry until 1968, when that became canonically permissible. Long before that, however, by the late 1930s or early 1940s, St. Andrew’s women were attending vestry meetings as non-voting associate members. By that time, too, women were serving as treasurer and secretary to the vestry. One of the earliest of the women to pioneer in the governance of St Andrew’s as an associate vestry member was R. (Rachel) Louise Travous

Louise Travous was born in 1892, the daughter of prominent attorney Charles N. and his wife, Gillian L. Travous. The status of the Travous family was reflected in the beautiful new home into which they moved in 1895 – the still impressive structure at 824 St. Louis Street. Louise never married and distinguished herself as a local historian, gathering an extensive collection of historically significant publications and probing the memories of long-time residents in numerous interviews. In an article published in the December 1949 issue of the Journal of the Illinois State Historical Society , entitled “Pioneer Illinois Library,” she traced the roots of the Edwardsville public library back to 1819, the year following the founding of the town. She also wrote and produced “A Pageant of Fort Russell,” which was presented in 1946 at a possible location of the fortification which had been built on the orders of territorial governor Ninian Edwards as a defense against Indians allied with the British during the War of 1812.

Louise was more than an avid local historian. The League of Women Voters was founded in 1920 in support of American women in the exercise of their newly acquired right to vote, which had been granted by the Nineteenth Amendment to the Constitution. The League was long in coming to Edwardsville, but it was Louise Travous who, with Mrs. James Reed, organized the Edwardsville chapter in 1954 with 54 charter members.

Architectural historian Cindy Reinhart tells us that Louise remained in the family house on St. Louis Street until 1942, when she moved into a smaller home on Center Street, which was designed by Edwardsville architect Edward A. Kane, Sr. Unlike the stately “Greek Revival” structure fronted by four imposing Corinthian columns where she had long resided, the new dwelling was starkly modern in its angularity. The two homes seem symbolic of her life -- committed to the past as a student of Edwardsville history but dedicated to the future as an advocate for women’s rights. She died in 1965 at the age of 72 and rests in Woodlawn cemetery in the Travous family plot, which is marked by a monument as imposing as the Travous family home a few blocks away. We can count her as one of our grandes dames.      -Jim Weingartner
