President's Message:

Dear Clients and Friends,

As we go into the Thanksgiving weekend, I have only one message to our Clients,
Friends and Family:   Thank You!

I am so grateful for the opportunity to do what we do with our lives here at Protected Tomorrows. On behalf of our entire team, I wish to thank all of  our wonderful clients who have allowed us to assist in their lives, all those who have supported our mission with their support, and all of the many organizations who work side by side with us to make lives better.

It is that wonderful time of year when we can take stock of our lives, remember those who no longer with us but who made a difference, and be in awe of what yet may come. As I read through the articles in this issue, I am amazed at how things are starting to change. Sometimes, in the middle of our lives, we forget what it was like 30 years ago. But things are changing for the better, and I look forward to the future of what is to come!

I wish you all a wonderful holiday. May it be filled with good food and even better company.

Warmest regards,

Mary Anne Ehlert,
Founder & President

Looking for new activity to do with your child? Try Equine!

Why not try Equine Therapy also known as Hippotherapy? The dictionary definition is "the use of horseback riding as a therapeutic or rehabilitative treatment, especially as a means of improving coordination, balance, and strength."

Below are two Equestrian Training Centers that have hippotherapy. Look in your area to find one close to your home.

In addition, there are two articles that connect this kind of activity/therapy to the children that have experienced positive interaction with animals including horses.

Equestrian Connection - Lake Forest, IL
At Equestrian Connection, our client feedback of "Best Days Happen Here" drives our ongoing commitment to exceptional client service. As a result, we make our therapy programs for mentally, emotionally and physically challenged children and adults accessible in individual or group settings. While many years ago, Equestrian Connection provided only hippotherapy and therapeutic riding; today, we offer more than seventeen (17) programs - from art and massage therapy to job training and team building. 847-615-8696    www.equestrianconnection.org

Hippotherapy Success! By Nathan
When my parents told me that my brother Jordan, who has Down Syndrome, was going to start horseback riding, I was a bit skeptical. Equestrian activities were something I never would have considered as a possibility for Jordan. The first thing I thought about were scenes like those shown on television, with obstacles to go around and jumps to clear, and I was certain that was something that would only lead to an injury. Beyond the possibility of injury, I did not think it would be something he would enjoy. I was quite wrong, and he has been riding for several years now. He began riding at Cowboy Dreams....

Why Animals Comfort Me as a Person With Autsim
By Yasmin Stubbings for TheMighty.com

In a world that is often difficult to process and understand, animals have played a big role in the comforting and healing I have felt when recovering from psychological problems through having autism. You probably wouldn't be able to tell I have autism unless you personally knew me and witnessed me having a meltdown. However, I have huge difficulties with sensory processing, relating to other people, understanding other people and coping with my emotions.
Being around animals feels comforting...Read More

Human Support Services to Open Bed and Breakfast in Waterloo, IL

"Human Support Services is thrilled to announce an exciting and innovative project we believe will offer countless opportunities for our clients and our community.

On February 16, 2018, HSS closed on property at 4505 HH Road in Waterloo that we plan to operate as a bed and breakfast and a group home. The home on the property had previously been operated as The Waterloo Inn bed and breakfast.

While we're still in the early stages of this project, we envision that this five-bedroom home will become a full-time home for three of our clients with developmental disabilities. The clients, with help and supervision from HSS staff, will work at and operate the B & B.

In addition to providing a new home for some of our clients, this project can and will offer jobs and vocational training opportunities for many."
