A Story of an Initiative

The Michael Hedley Burton play
This War is Not Inevitable is coming to North Vancouver on April 2, Easter Monday. It will be shown at the Waldorf School at 1:30 pm.

This production is about the Threefold Social Organism or social threefolding, first conceived by Rudolf Steiner in the summer of 1917. It is a blueprint for how people can learn to live with one another without being dominated either by economic powers or the state or a collusion of the two. War does not need to happen. Social threefolding factors in a third power - the free spiritual and cultural life of citizens which can act as a wedge between the two other powers. Today people fight passionately over whether the Left or the Right is most qualified to govern. Could the answer be to take the best of both and lift this to something higher?

In the recent Winter 2017/18 issue of New View, an anthroposophical journal from the UK, Michael Burton writes that he was inspired to write this play because he believes that theatre can be a compelling medium. When 100 people are put in a room and exposed to something powerful and artistic,........Read on

Obituaries
Elizabeth Veronica Ardagh May 17, 1920 - February 1, 2018

Elizabeth Veronica Ardagh was born May 17, 1920 she live almost one hundred years in one of most accelerated times of development in human history.

She was born to William Johnson, a father who was a Gentleman farmer in Cornwall, England. In life, Veronica was fond of her brother Michael and loved her sister Patricia. She grew up very close to her mother Winifred Ardagh, who was an Anthroposophist. It seems that it was her mother's influence that helped her make Anthroposophy her lifelong spiritual path, her source for life's meaning. A friend of Veronica remarked that perhaps it was Anthroposophy that helped her cross the threshold in such a peaceful, grace-filled way. And if any of you had a chance to see her body during the vigil, it was remarkable how this peace and light filled her countenance. Her life forces, her childlikeness and joy were still present in her lifeless body.

And this is a also testament to another great joy in her life, Eurythmy, a modern art that seeks to make speech and music visible through movement. And Eurythmy also works to enliven the physical body, giving it life and vibrancy. And this we could even see in her death. Veronica was trained in Eurythmy in the late 30's in Dornach Switzerland. And it is also remarkable to mention that her teacher was Marie Steiner herself.

Veronica had many dear friends, including Dorothy Haller. But it seems that one of Veronica's most precious gifts in her life was her friendship with her dear Thora Hawkes. They spent so much time together. My colleague Rev. Susan Locey remembers that 'Veronica was very faithful to Thora, visiting her daily in the care home and rubbing Weleda arnica cream on her back. Thora had worked as a public health nurse and Veronica liked to listen to her stories of helping poor families, especially new immigrants.

Veronica was very sunny and light-hearted, but she never forgot kindness or her sometimes critical impressions of people. Her  greatest joy was the sea and traveling, ............... read on

memories from members of the Waldorf Academy, Toronto community
Many of us in the Waldorf school community, downtown and in Thornhill, are grieving the loss of D'Arcy Mackenzie.  He passed away peacefully in the hospital, surrounded by his family, close to a year after his diagnosis of brain cancer.  D'Arcy and Leslie's daughters, Molly and Isobel, graduated from Waldorf Academy, Molly in 2009, Isobel in 2016.

In Molly's early years at Waldorf Academy, D'Arcy was class rep, and around 2003 he became co-chair of the Parent Council.  He was already involved in other areas of the school, having demonstrated an ability to penetrate deeply into issues ranging from finance to curriculum review and revision of the governance model.  His commitment, insight, and hard work served the school well on committees, and he was a natural to join the Board, where he served terms as Chair and as President.  He demonstrated leadership during a challenging period when the decision was made to purchase the properties for the Childcare Centre as part of a long-term vision for the school, and he always stood firm in his belief that Waldorf education should be accessible to as many people as possible.

D'Arcy had wide-ranging knowledge and a keen interest in many subjects.  He was always ready for a thoughtful conversation on history, politics, economics, or social trends, but equally equipped and willing to talk about esoteric and spiritual matters.  His personal integrity and principles were deeply rooted in Anthroposophy, and those principles guided his thoughts and actions.  A branch of anthroposophy, Associative Economics, was profoundly important to D'Arcy as a practical means to create a better world.  His vision of Waldorf education was that it too had the potential to bring about social change.  In this, D'Arcy's work for the school was an expression of his hopes for humanity and a way for him, personally, to make a contribution to a larger endeavour.

Another side of D'Arcy could be seen in The Christmas Story at the Church of the Holy Trinity.  Anyone who attended or participated in the pageant for the past many years would have seen D'Arcy, either as Herod or as Joseph.  He took his portrayal..... read on

Rudolf Steiner's Mystery Dramas Around the World
Human beings discover themselves through others.
Rudolf Steiner expands on this simple yet remarkable sentence by Martin Buber in his four mystery dramas.
It is therefore not surprising that staging these works of art again and again in a whole variety of ways, in order to secure the depth of our working and being together, is one of the most magical and memorable traditions found in anthroposophy. The more we rely on each other in today's differentiated world, experiencing how our confusion often distorts this depth, the more relevant it seems to me today to both perform and to see these plays.

In Search of the Future -
A Tour of Discovery in Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria

July 28 to August 20, 2018

Anthroposophy was planted in these Eastern European countries early in the last century. Communism kept it underground prompting it to grow strong roots. At the end of that era, it grew strong and rm above ground and blossomed with joy that it could now be free.We have known none of that in the West.
We will carry the awareness that the Slavs will lead the way in heart- thinking consciousness in the future. On this tour we will explore what has been happening anthroposophically in Eastern Europe in the last 25 years and, in Bulgaria, meet some of those on a similar yet different spiritual path acknowledged by Rudolf Steiner.
