A Note from Scott and Marsha
January 16, 2020
Well, here we go again with the good ole NC weather. Buying sunscreen and swatting mosquitoes in the house in January was NOT on my normal To-Do list for January. And checking the weather today? " Expect drops in temperatures next week,"  they say. I feel like I should wear one flip flop and one boot just for funzies. Insert an exasperated eye-roll here with me please. Happy New Year.

If you don't follow us or you are new to our stories, a year ago, I wrote about Scott and I starting Whole 30. It was his gut health we were after, and I'm of the mindset  leave no one behind  (even though I've never been in the military I've decided this should be everyone's motto.) I couldn't let my man suffer alone, so we suffered together. For 120 days. ONE HUNDRED TWENTY DAYS. What is Whole 30? No sugar. No wheat. No legumes. No alcohol. No dairy.

I know, right? Kill me now. But with great success after crying weekly and realizing how much I emotionally eat, we were healthier. And like every normal person, we get comfortable and reintroduce things over time and slowly backslide with all things wonderful like cake, ginger cookies, Moscow Mules, chocolates, french bread, black beans, cheese...oh, how I love thee.

So with the new year, we are doing a reset for just 30 days. Thirty LONG days. We are halfway and well, I'm a miserable cow. Why is this so DANG hard? To top it off, it's our annual planning time. And everyone else is also doing some sort of reset of their own so we are all a bunch of miserable, fun-loving creatures. Add goal planning, opinions and lack of overall food/wheat/sugar/alcohol/dairy/legumes, it's no wonder any of us came out alive.

So what have I done to compensate for these deep, sad and hungry feelings? I have taken home 8 new house plants. I am OUT OF CONTROL. It is almost time for an intervention. I'm not even kidding. I told a customer yesterday I had about 68 houseplants and she looked at me like I was insane. I feel insane, but I can't help it. They bring me joy. They improve my mood. You should try it.

In the meantime, I'm in building vision mode. Details coming soon. All these things to help you bring green home and improve your mood, too! See you in the garden!
JUDY'S HOUSEPLANT PICK
Dracaena Mass Cane is the houseplant Judy chose for this week's feature. This plant will grow up to 15 feet tall, so it makes the perfect plant for a space needing height. Dracaena prefers medium light locations and likes to be moderately moist. Make sure not to leave the roots sitting in water. Dracaena are excellent at removing toxins from the air, so you can breathe easier when you have one around. You'll love this low maintenance beauty.
RED TWIG DOGWOOD
You may read Dogwood and think tree , but the Red Twig Dogwood is actually a shrub . This deciduous shrub reveals gorgeous dark red branches that will accent your winter landscape beautifully, and you won't be disappointed with the glossy green foliage spring through summer. You'll also enjoy white flowers followed by blue berries. One thing we love about this shrub is the different soil types it can tolerate and how diversely it can be used in your landscape.
WINTER JASMINE
If you are missing spring blooms, we have the plant for you! Winter Jasmine blooms adorable yellow flowers in JANUARY! Hello, happy! While Winter Jasmine does not boast the fragrance of its Jasmine cousins, it still brings joy for those who need a pop of yellow in their winter garden. Use it as a ground cover or near walls, fences or trellises and it will climb if you just train it a bit. Be sure to plant in well-drained soil.
