The Unnatural Thing
In Luke 17 we read about 10 lepers who meet up with Jesus as He enters their village. They call out in a loud voice, "Jesus, Master, have pity on us!" Jesus tells them to go and show themselves to the priest. On the way, they are all healed of their leprosy. Only one of them returns to thank Jesus and give glory to God. Jesus says, "Ten were cleansed, were they not? Where are the other nine?" He then tells the one, "Stand up and go; your faith has saved you."

We are indebted to Luke for this story of the 10 lepers. It was required that the priests should give a clean bill of health to cured lepers before they could rejoin society again. As the scripture reveals, the 10 were not cured as before they started on their journey to the priests, but they were healed sometime during their journey. Only one returned to thank Jesus. Only one was grateful enough to return and say "thank you" while the other nine hurried off. Jesus asked, "where are the other nine?" It is commonly accepted that the one who returned to give thanks to Jesus was doing the natural thing, but think for a moment... what this man did was the UNNATURAL thing. The other nine did the natural thing, they forgot the very one who had cured them.

Only 10% of people are thankful to God for all His wondrous deeds and bother to thank Him. The other 90%? Probably victims of the entitlement mentality or the victim mentality. I really hope this 90-10 rule is not true. If it is, let us always - not only on this Thanksgiving Day, but always -  be a part of the 10% who give thanks in all things.

Happy Thanksgiving,
Fr. Nareg Terterian, Pastor

Sunday School Thanksgiving Feast
Reported by Mrs. Mrs Vicky Hagobian

On Sunday, November 18th the St. Sarkis Church community celebrated their own Thanksgiving with over 125 parishioners in attendance. This year's traditional American Thanksgiving feast was hosted by the Sunday School and the ARS Erebouni Chapter. The homemade meal included perfectly cooked turkey and all the fixings right down to the pumpkin pie. Both young and old enjoyed the great food but, most importantly, they all enjoyed some laughs, good conversation and quality time with friends and family. Those in attendance were also treated to a presentation by some of the young adults of our community. Aleene Voskerijian, Greg Dosttur and Hagop Minassian attended the Summer Youth Academy at the Holy See of Cilicia this past summer. They talked of their wonderful life changing experience during their two weeks there and answered questions from the audience. The takeaway from this wonderful afternoon was that we are all blessed in many ways. We all need to be thankful for life's everyday blessings.

Salt & Light Youth Group
Reported by Mrs. Nyrie Bedrossian

On Friday, November 16th, 2018 the St. Sarkis Salt & Light Youth Group met for their 3rd session of this season. We have been blessed to have a growing number of youth attend this season and welcomed a few new members to our session. As they have become accustomed to, the children gathered in Chadrjian Hall for a meal together and some social time before they broke out into their facilitator groups. Last weeks breakout discussion was from the Prayer Study of the YDISCIPLE series and was entitled "How to Pray." The discussion, led by the individual trained facilitators, proved to be engaging and insightful for the kids.

As we approach the holidays, the Salt & Light Youth Ministry Committee is also planning some exciting outreach and social activities for our members. Our youth group is collecting gifts to donate to the St. Mary's Children's Hospital in Bayside this holiday season. Additionally, we will be taking a group of our kids to spend a morning with the children at the hospital doing an interactive craft or playing games with them. We believe this will be an impactful experience for our members as they may have an opportunity to provide happiness and cheer to those in a less fortunate circumstance during the holidays. The youth ministry committee is also excited for their first "Ugly Christmas Sweater Party", which will be held on Friday, December 14th from 8pm-11pm. This event is a joint event hosted by the Salt & Light Youth Group and AYF for their members and families. We would also like to encourage any families that have children 10 years old and older that might be interested in joining either or both organizations to attend and take advantage of this opportunity to have their children meet other youth from our community.
Interfaith Thanksgiving Service

On Monday, November 19, 2018 St. Anastasia Roman Catholic Church in Douglaston hosted an Interfaith Community Thanksgiving Service.  St. Sarkis Church was among the seven congregations represented. The service included recitations from the Old Testament, reflections and the singing of hymns.

This is the 4th year that St. Sarkis church participates in this Interfaith Thanksgiving Service. This is a great way to begin the holiday season praying with people of all faiths and learning about different religious traditions.  Our differences - spiritual or cultural - should unite and not divide us.
Saturday School Photo

During that unexpectedly snowy day last Thursday, a group of St Sarkis Church members braved the elements and came into the city to see the Armenian exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  This trip was organized by the Ladies Guild of St. Sarkis Church and provided an opportunity for those who were interested in spending their afternoon at the Metropolitan Museum of Art enjoying the beautiful Armenian artifacts on display.

As someone who has also seen this exhibition, you realize the depth and breadth of the Armenian culture on display and you can't help but feel very proud to be an Armenian.

AYF Armenian Cultural Event (ACE) Hosted By NY Hyortik November 2018 Weekend Recap
Reported By: Lilit Kevorkian (NY Hyortik)
On the 9th and 10th of November, about 40 AYFers from the Mid-Atlantic region came together at St. Illuminator's Armenian Cathedral in Manhattan for ACE weekend, hosted by the NY Hyortik AYF Chapter. They enjoyed a weekend full of lectures, dances, workshops, games and discussions.

When all the juniors arrived at the church they were so excited to see their friends from the other chapters. We started off Friday night with a documentary about Artsakh. Teaching Armenian youth about Artsakh is very important. U. Razmig Boyadjian and I split the juniors into 5 groups (խումբ means group). Their groups were led by the junior executives (Aren Bedrossian, Aris Givelekian, Nicole Yaghdjian, Sareen Bedrossian, and Alique Karakachian). Each group was named for a town in Artsakh (Stepanakert, Lachin, Shushi, Martakert and Shahumian). After each activity, the juniors would line up in their groups and the junior executives would count off everyone in their line. As they went from group to group the juniors would proudly chant the name of their group.

The following morning, our alarm clock was patriotic songs playing over the speaker in the hall. We started our day by singing Mer Hayrenik and saying prayers in church. After the prayers, U. Audrey Mardoian talked about ANCA activities in front of the Genocide Memorial in the church. After breakfast, it was time to start our day. There were many discussions about how to keep the Armenian culture and identity alive in the U.S. The discussion was led by Princeton PHD student, U. Varak Ketsemanian. The juniors were engaged and the discussions were lively. One of the lessons the juniors loved was when Ungerouhi.Maria Nercessian (Director of the Yeraz dance group) taught them the history of Armenian dancing. The juniors learned the popular dance steps of the Michigan hop and the Tamzara. The energy in the room was alive. In fact, during the breaks between each discussion, the juniors would often jump and dance to the Michigan hop and it was amazing to see them all having so much fun. We had another interesting lecture given to us by U. Veh Bezdikian, based on the book by Hrant Markarian, about famous Armenian writers lost during the Genocide. Some Ayfers were asked to read samples of the writing of the famous writers. We had our U. Anahit Indzhigulyan who performed beautiful Armenian songs for us. We were very thankful to have Der Hayr Nareg Terterian give us a lecture about how the church and the Armenian culture intervene. After all the lectures, we had a Trivia Game to see which group remembered the most information from the weekend. The winner of the game was team Martakert. The weekend ended with a lovely dinner and even more dancing for the juniors.

The Hyortik chapter would like to thank St. Illuminators Cathedral for allowing us to host this event in their beautiful church. We would also like to thank all of the senior volunteers from both Moush and Hyortik who helped out with the event, junior advisors U. Mher Janian and U. Annette Givelekian who gave us an opportunity to run this event, and our guest lectures who came to teach our youth about the importance of Armenian culture. Big things are happening in our chapter!

Community Health  Screening Event

November is National Diabetes Month

Every 17 seconds someone is diagnosed with diabetes, a disease which kills more people each year than breast cancer and AIDS combined.   The American Diabetes Association's website states that as many as 1 in 3 American adults will have diabetes in 2050 unless steps are taken to stop this disease.

Early detection is critical.

This is why St Sarkis Armenian Apostolic Church is hosting Life Line Screening, the nation's leading provider of preventive health screenings on Monday, November 26, 2018.      One of the tests is a simple blood test for glucose (sugar) which can determine if a person is at-risk of developing diabetes.

Other screenings include tests to check for blocked carotid arteries, atrial fibrillation, and high blood pressure, which are the three leading risk factors for stroke.  Nearly 800,000 strokes will occur this year, taking a life approximately every four minutes.

There are also tests to check for abdominal aortic aneurysms and PAD, also called "hardening of the arteries" in the legs.

Diabetes is a major risk factor for stroke and is directly related to Peripheral Arterial Disease.  Recommendations for people with diabetes included a PAD test starting at age 50.

Screening packages start at $139. Single tests cost around $70.

For more information regarding the screenings or to schedule an appointment, call 1-888-653-6441 or go to  www.lifelinescreening.com/communitycircle or textthe word circle to 797979. Pre-registration is required

THE EPISTLE OF ST. PAUL TO THE THESSALONIANS (1.1-10)
Paul, Silas and Timothy,
To the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace and peace to you.
We always thank God for all of you, mentioning you in our prayers. We continually remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.
For we know, brothers loved by God, that he has chosen you, because our gospel came to you not simply with words, but also with power, with the Holy Spirit and with deep conviction. You know how we lived among you for your sake. You became imitators of us and of the Lord; in spite of severe suffering, you welcomed the message with the joy given by the Holy Spirit. And so you became a model to all the believers in Macedonia and Achaia. The Lord's message rang out from you not only in Macedonia and Achaia-your faith in God has become known everywhere.
Therefore we do not need to say anything about it, for they themselves report what kind of reception you gave us. They tell how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead-Jesus, who rescues us from the coming wrath.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO LUKE (12.13-31)
Someone in the crowd said to him, "Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me." Jesus replied, "Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?" Then he said to them, "Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions."
And he told them this parable: "The ground of a certain rich man produced a good crop. He thought to himself, 'What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.'"Then he said, 'This is what I'll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I'll say to myself, "You have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry." "But God said to him, 'You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?' "This is how it will be with anyone who stores up things for himself but is not rich toward God."
Then Jesus said to his disciples: "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. Life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds! Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest? "Consider how the lilies grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you, O you of little faith! And do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it.
For the pagan world runs after all such things, and your Father knows that you need them. But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.

Liturgical Calendar (Crossroads)
This Sunday, November 25, is the first Sunday of Advent (from the Latinadventus, meaning "coming"). Advent is a season of penitence, anticipation, and preparation. Advent serves as a reminder of the original anticipation of the birth of Christ, as well as the anticipation for Christ's return. Ideally, Advent should be a time of quiet reflection and meditation. In modern times the period leading to Christmas is far from calm, and often is stressful and frenetic. It is a good time to remember to pause and reflect on the proper observation of the birth of our Lord and Savior.

In the true spirit of Christmas remember that this time of the year, although filled with joy for most, can be lonely and sad for many people. Reach out to an elderly person living alone, someone who is ill, or someone who is mourning the recent loss of a loved one.

Saints remembered this week:
Saturday, November 24: St. Gregory the Wonderworker; St. Nicholas the Wonderworker;
St. Myron the Bishop.
Monday, November 26: St. Juliana
