NFHS Changes Affect Sticks, Helmets
and Facemasks for 2019-20

The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) announced ice hockey rule changes for the 2019-20 season. They include player and goalkeeper stick lengths and an emphasis on requirements that all players wear helmets and facemasks meeting HECC/ASTM standards at the time of manufacture.

Growth of Women's Hockey Discussed
at Management Conference

Dr. Samantha Menton talks with Travis Amburgey of Wicked Rags in the Innovations Arena.
The NSGA 55th Annual Management Conference & 21st Annual Team Dealer Summit included a look at business opportunities in the emerging women's sports of ice hockey, wrestling and flag football. Dr. Samantha Menton, who is the head coach of the Atlanta Lady Thrashers hockey program, shared her perspective from growing up as a player in the Chicago area, progressing through the collegiate ranks and now trying to build the sport in the southeastern United States.

The Conference & Summit also included a panel discussion on the evolution of Esports and sessions on retail store presentation, retail technology, how to reduce your tax bill and Servant Leadership.

What's Next for Women's Pro Hockey?

On the heels of the demise of the Canadian Women's Hockey League this spring, more than 200 professional players throughout the world have banded together with plans to sit out the upcoming pro season. The players formed the Professional Women's Hockey Players Association (PWHPA) in hopes of building a sustainable league to showcase their talents.

Brad Marchand of the Stanley Cup finalist Boston Bruins has a reputation as one of the NHL's biggest villains from his on-ice behavior. Four kids from Maine have a different off-the-ice view after assisting Marchand in the airport at last year's NHL All-Star Game.

Legendary Co-Chairs of Hockey Canada Foundation Hope to Get More Girls Playing

Two-time Olympic gold medalist Meaghan Mikkelson and former Edmonton Oilers' legend Kevin Lowe will be honorary co-chairs of the 16th annual Hockey Canada Foundation Gala & Golf on June 17-18 in Edmonton, Alberta. An area of focus is to use proceeds from the event to support initiatives to give more girls an opportunity to play hockey.

American Airlines Eliminates Oversized Baggage Fees for Hockey Sticks

American Airlines eliminated a $150 oversized baggage fee for common types of musical and sports equipment - including hockey sticks. Sports and musical equipment weighing less than 50 pounds, and not exceeding a combined 126 inches in length plus width plus height, can be checked for American's standard cost of $30 for the first checked bag. The new policy took effect May 21.
