Bring Your Pet to be Blessed on
Sunday at 1:15
in the Fr. Grassi Community Park

As I read about St. Francis of Assisi, I realized a new meaning of the word "saint." I have often been told that in order to be a saint you have to do a good deed for another person. At least, that is what I had always thought being a saint meant. My thoughts quickly changed when I read about St. Francis. His love and kindness towards animals of all kinds spoke to me. Of course! If there is a saint for healing, for love, and for protection, why couldn't there be one for animals?

In St. Francis of Assisi's Canticle Of Creatures, a hymn of praise that recapitulates Francis's journey to God, we hear St. Francis express his love for all creations and to treat them as brother and sister. This is important because it shows how valuable he sees life is for every being. He was dedicated to poverty, humility, obedience, patience, and compassion. In 1209, he received permission from Pope Innocent III to form a new religious order now known as the Franciscans. In 1224, Francis became the first saint in history to receive the stigmata (the wounds of Christ crucified). On October 4, 1226, Francis died in the town of Assisi and was quickly canonized by Pope Gregory IX.

So why do we celebrate the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi? We celebrate Francis's life as we should all think and aspire to be like him. We should all treat every being with kindness and love, and we can remember St. Francis and his love.

St. Josaphat will be having a Blessing of the Pets in the Fr. Grassi Community Park on Sunday, October 7, at 1:15 pm. Bring your dogs, cats, hamsters, fish, turtles, guinea pigs, rabbits, and any other animal you may have as they are all deserving of a blessing and love.
