Jordy's Fall Update
Since he came to CASA, Jordy has had over 500 interactions with youth. In addition to the children with whom he regularly attends Court proceedings due to abuse or neglect, he visits the Monroe County Youth Shelter, Prosecutor's Office and Susie's Place. Recent additions for Jordy assisting have included assisting a survivor of domestic violence who felt she would be unable to face her perpetrator during a protective order hearing, and spending extra time with forensic interviewers at Susie's Place to minimize their vicarious trauma after talking with child victims.
In October, CASA staff member, Anne Veldman, agreed to be Jordy’s handler when his primary handler was unavailable. They went through a training process and recently had their first trial together. During the trial, Jordy assisted a teen youth he had been working with to prepare to testify. Anne and Jordy are a great team. Jordy loves working with her!
Jordy's primary handler, Tia Arthur, attended the International Courthouse Dogs Conference in Bellevue, Washington, her third time since the inception of the Courthouse Facility Dog Program of Monroe County CASA.The Courthouse Dogs Foundation has established the best practices for all Courthouse Facility Dog Programs and supports Jordy and the work he does for our community. Tia also completed a two-day seminar to obtain skills for teaming in crisis response for the community, including mass violence and other community-impacted incidents, a skill hopefully never needed but a valuable community resource.
Since Olivia's Bake Sale Project in June, which raised $350, CASA has purchased mini-Jordy dolls for children who have worked intensively with Jordy. With Olivia's blessing, CASA developed a 'Get One, Give One' campaign, which allows you to purchase two Jordy dolls for $20. You get to keep one doll and the other doll is donated to a child on your behalf. The campaign kicked off at this year's CASAblanca fundraiser in October and raised $800 to purchase more dolls for children. Stay tuned to Facebook and your email on how you can get your own Jordy doll very soon!
As a result of including animals in our work through the Courthouse Facility Dog Program, Tia Arthur and Dave Wright, CASA Strategic Advisor, have founded the Monroe County LINK Alliance. This group seeks to create awareness about the link between animal abuse, child abuse, domestic violence, and elder abuse. Through educating our community about the LINK and how animals in family homes are treated, we can reduce the occurrence of child abuse and domestic violence as well! Please click
