Chamber Update
Arthur Ashe once said, “True heroism is remarkably sober, very undramatic. It is not the urge to surpass all others at whatever cost, but the urge to serve others at whatever cost.”
As we celebrate Veteran’s Day, it’s important to highlight the positive impact our veterans have when returning from deployment and entering the civilian workforce. Time and time again we hear from State Chamber members of the commitment, professionalism and dedication that follows veterans into the workplace. As recently as three years ago Delaware’s veterans unemployment rate was triple that of nonservice citizens.
Recognizing the need to reverse that trend, the Delaware State Chamber of Commerce partnered with the New Castle County Chamber of Commerce to create the Joint Military Affairs Committee (JMAC). Modeled after the partnership between the Central Delaware Chamber of Commerce and Dover Air Force base, the JMAC works to promote members of the Delaware National Guard and Reserve as a prospective and valued employee base when businesses are looking to hire.
The creation of the Warrior Friendly Business Award, this year won by Delmarva Power and Waste Masters Solutions, recognizes employers’ commitments to hiring veterans, and in part has contributed to the lowering of unemployment of Delaware’s veterans community to below the civilian rate.
