Note From Mr. Atkins
Families,

What a shock to Springtime to wake up to all this heavy snow!

We are so proud of our 3rd-5th Graders who have been participating in CMAS this week. We've had excellent attendance and it's been wonderful seeing some of our remote learners back in the building, even if briefly!

Speaking of remote learners, I am under the impression that DPS may host Remote Learning Centers next year for families who still do not feel comfortable returning to the classroom. It is likely there will still be some COVID precautions in place this Fall at minimum as we await the vaccines for young children. These Remote Centers likely would operate completely independently from our school, which would require essentially a separate enrollment. Because of this, it is likely our budget would be impacted by the loss of remote students. Because of this, we need to re-engage in budget planning to prepare for next year. It would be extremely helpful if you could complete THIS SURVEY to help us get a general idea of how many students may be enrolling in a Remote Learning Center for the coming school year.

I wanted to remind families in the area that Street Sweeping resumed this month, and Stedman's streets are swept the 4th Tuesdays and Wednesdays of the month. Though we've asked the City to delay ticketing during drop-off mornings, they've continued to ticket in the early hours. Please be aware in the future so that you can avoid receiving a street sweeping ticket! (Next dates are April 27 & 28).

We are excited to have many new families joining us next year as our school continues to GROW. We have organized a new student orientation for ECE families on April 17th and Kinder families on April 24th. We'll also be hosting a New Family Welcome Reception for all of our new families on Saturday, May 15th. We look forward to welcoming them into our community.

As we enter the homestretch of the school year, please remember to stay vigilant and safe practicing the important COVID precautions, and remember that our individual decisions have impacts on our broader community.

Don't forget to continue scrolling down for other updates! Thank you to our PTA for rallying the donors to support our school, we hope you are able to spread the word.

Sincerely,

Michael Atkins

Familias

Atentamente,

Michael Atkins

Garden Clean-up

Thank you to everyone that showed up to help prepare the garden for growing! It looks much better and is now ready for our classes to plant as their seeds/seedlings are ready!
Picture Day
Mark your calendar for Picture Day on May 4th. It will look different this year due to COVID-19 regulations, but we're excited to have something for families to remember this school year by. We would love to have remote learners participate and will be sending a schedule closer to the date.
Field Day!
Thanks to updated regulations from DPS, we will be able to run modified Field Days this year! We know our students (and staff!) will be extremely excited about this.

Please stay tuned for more information. Parent volunteers will be needed to make this happen, so we will send out a sign up sheet once we have the schedule created. We will run 4 sessions of Field Day so that we don't have as many students outside as we normally would, and ALL participants and spectators will be required to wear masks at all times. Remote learners are invited to participate if they feel comfortable!

  • Tuesday, May 11: Kinder and 1st Graders
  • Thursday, May 13: 2nd-5th Graders

A special thanks to Mr. Rossi for putting together our modified Field Day on short notice!
Extended Pandemic-EBT Benefits Returning
Colorado P-EBT benefits will begin in late May

The Colorado Department of Human Services (CDHS), in collaboration with the Colorado Department of Education (CDE), is pleased to announce that Coloradans with eligible school-enrolled children will begin to receive food benefits through the Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer (P-EBT) program starting in late May. This effort will help support Colorado's families during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The P-EBT program is designed to reimburse households for meals missed during school closures or reduced hours for students who are eligible for free and reduced-price school meals and attend a school that participates in the National School Lunch Program. This is a continuation of the P-EBT program that was initiated in July 2020 to reimburse families on free and reduced-price lunch for meals missed at school due to COVID-19. Families who qualify will receive a cash-like benefit for August through May of the 2020-21 school year for food-eligible purchases.

More information will be released in late May on P-EBT benefits. Further updates will be shared on the CDHS website, on CDHS social media channels, and through community partners.

CMAS TESTING

Dear Stedman Families in 3rd-5th Grade:

As you likely heard, The United States Department of Education approved Colorado’s waiver for reduced CMAS testing this spring. As a result, we have modified our testing schedule to reflect the reduced testing, per the waiver. Third and fifth grade students are only required to take the ELA test; fourth grade students are only required to take the math test. However, the waiver does permit families to request their student complete both assessments if desired. If you would like your student to take BOTH assessments, please complete THIS FORM no later than Friday, April 9. If you do not complete this form, your student will only take the required assessment unless you have opted out. If you have previously opted out of CMAS testing, no action is required.

Included in this letter (below) is our updated schedule for CMAS Testing. On each day of testing, please help ensure your student is ready to do their best on the assessments by...
  • Getting a good night’s sleep
  • Eating a healthy breakfast (breakfast will also be served at school)
  • Avoiding scheduling doctor’s appointments on testing days
  • Bringing their fully charged, school-issued Chromebook to school each day for testing

Students learning remotely will need to come into the building from 9:10-11:30 on the testing days indicated on the calendar below. We cannot administer the tests remotely. If you are unable to bring your child in for all of his/her testing and did not complete the opt-out form in Parent Portal before February 26, we ask that you please email Michael_Atkins@dpsk12.org stating that you would like to opt out of CMAS testing for your child (please be sure to include your child’s name). Please note that there may be occasions during testing sessions when students who have opted out may have asynchronous/remote learning due to staffing limitations.

If you have questions, please contact Emily_Madison@dspk12.org or Adrienne_Lopez@dpsk12.org.

We appreciate your support during this time. Thank you, and go Knights!

¡Gracias, y adelante Knights!

Emergency Financial Assistance
Knowing the COVID-19 pandemic continues to negatively impact the lives of Denver families, DHS is now offering emergency/disaster assistance payments up to $4,000 to qualifying residents.

These payments can be used for a variety of reasons – to cover rent or pay the mortgage, to pay for mental or medical care, to pay for home or auto repairs, to pay for food or school supplies, and more. To qualify, one must be:

  • Household is determined to be ineligible for public assistance programs;
  • Annual household income is under $75,000;
  • Eligible child in the household (according to state rules and regulations);
  • Lawfully present in the country; and
  • Has a need for services directly relating COVID-19-related emergency

The program is open until funds are exhausted. To apply, go to Colorado.gov/PEAK and apply for Colorado Works/TANF. Please note that because this is a unique and temporary program, the “Am I eligible?” feature will not distinguish between this program and the regular Colorado Works/TANF programs. We encourage anyone with questions to call 720-944-4DHS (4347) to speak with a customer services representative.
