I'm writing to you on election day, full of the anxiety and hope and longing and desperation that I've also heard many of you describe. By the time this gets to you, many of the results will be known. Regardless of the outcome of this one election, it will be good to be together on Sunday, to celebrate or to mourn, to hold one another's hands as we commit yet again to the vital and messy work of democracy.
I've felt myself buoyed this week by how engaged our conversation about race and white fragility felt on Sunday. Thank you to everyone who was able to stay, and for your rich stories and insights. Ilana Trumbull-Stearns is collecting names of people who would like to do follow up work on overcoming white fragility-please get in touch with her if you'd like to be involved. Regardless of the outcome of this election, we have generations of work yet to do to dismantle racism and white supremacy culture. Based on what I heard after the service, I think many of you may be interested in this video, a sort of follow up to the sermon:
https://youtu.be/DW7sIVqHZDY
. It is an excerpt from a training at First Unitarian Universalist of Minneapolis with Dr. Heather Hackman. In it, she gives a succinct and powerful telling of the story of race in America.
With you on the Journey,
Rev. Marcus

It has been a big year for democracy and a roller coaster of a ride. Whatever the outcome of the elections, our goals remain basically the same as parents and caregivers. Raise our charges to embrace the world courageously with compassion, empathy, and ethical values which look to bring equality to all peoples with a vision of justice through the democratic process, spiritual growth, and a healthy respect for the interdependent web. No matter what the outcome is we need to take a long deep look at the kind of world we want to build with our children for our great-grandchildren. It is really tough sometimes to parent as an isolated nuclear family. This is why we come together as a village. The group reinforces the values we hope to instill. We need each other to help raise our charges into the adults they will become.
Socks Appeal - Joan Nelson would always get this rolling by making an announcement and calling attention to the wicker basket in the lobby. Those living on the street really appreciate a new pair of clean dry socks. Socks are collected and then taken to St Vinnie's in San Rafael for distribution by their staff. New white tube socks are requested.
Here is the link to
pick a Sunday or two for your family to bring snack
Children's snack/communion. Directions are at this link as well. Some of you prefer to pick a date and some are fine with me assigning a date. I will let you all have another chance to self-select for about a week. If providing a snack is not an option for you for any reason just let me know. We always offer the option of turning in your receipts for reimbursement. Food for these kids is a community building experience just like it is for adults. We also use it as a teaching tool sometimes when they get to have a snack while listening to a lesson.
Parent Group meeting with Family Bowling, Nov 11th, 1-3pm, Country Club Bowl, San Rafael. All ages welcome. Parents bowl and/or talk. Teens and children bowl. Pizza, fun, and community building. RSVP to Ali Jenkins or Grace Dearborn.
Stone Soup, Nov 18: Families with children in grade 5 and up please arrive at 9:30. 5th through 7th graders help Mikey Songster make the soup, set the tables, etc. YRUU has a final rehearsal. To save on using paper bowls we invite families to bring their own tableware and then take it home to wash. This teen-led service will feature an original script. This decades-long tradition is always a Sunday to remember.
Deck the Halls,
Dec 2, please plan on staying after service again this year to make a joyful noise and decorate the sanctuary. Crafts and light lunch make this a favorite multigenerational event.

Help Needed for Joan Nelson's "Celebration of Life"
|
|
On Saturday Nov. 10, at 2PM we will be celebrating Joan Nelson's remarkable life. One way to honor Joan's memory would be to bring finger food desserts (cookies, lemon bars, brownies - something you can eat w/o a fork) to the memorial OR a floral arrangement. Either would be appreciated. If you'd like to bring a dessert, please email
karen.h.auroy@gmail.com
. If you'd like to bring a floral arrangement, please contact sallyschroeder@comcast.net.
