The Inter-Faith Gathering for The Tree of Life

Pictured here is the beautiful Elizabeth Taylor in The Sandpiper 1965, in which she starred alongside Richard Burton. In it, "A free-spirited single mother forms a connection with the wed headmaster of an Episcopal boarding school in California."  Dame Elizabeth Rosemond Taylor began her career as a child actress in the early 1940s and was one of the most popular stars of classical Hollywood cinema in the 1950s. She continued her career successfully into the 1960s and remained a well-known public figure for the rest of her life. In 1999, the American Film Institute named her the seventh-greatest female screen legend.

Get a load of Maxwell Smart, chatting it up on his shoe phone back in 1970. The hit television spy-spoof series Get Smart was created by Mel Brooks and ran for 5 seasons (1965-1970).
Barbara Feldon was nominated for two primetime Emmys for the lovable role of sidekick, Agent 99 to Don Adams' bumbling secret agent, Maxwell Smart. The series was a big hit throughout the 60s, everyone loved its absurdity and the kitsch "high tech" gadgets like the shoe phone and cone of silence. The show was also famous for Adams' catch phrases: "Missed it by that much", "sorry about that chief", and "if you don't mind 99".
Elvis was actually on the road for the last two New Year's Eve celebrations of his life. It was on December 31, 1975, that he appeared at the Silverdome in Pontiac, Michigan. There was an estimated crowd of 60,000 bringing in the new year with 'The King' that night.
On New Year's Eve 1976-Elvis's last New Year's Eve-he once again took to the stage. This show was at Civic Center Arena in Pittsburgh for a crowd of 16,049. Just like the year before, at the stroke of midnight, the crowd joined Elvis in singing 'Auld Lang Syne'. Sadly, Elvis wouldn't live to see another New Year, but his fans were grateful that he chose to share his last two 'New Years' with them.
Remember these guys? Here we have television's 'CHiPS' officers Jon Baker and Frank Ponch Poncherello aka Larry Wilcox and Erik Estrada back in 1977. CHiPs was an action/crime television series that followed the lives of two motorcycle police officers of the California Highway Patrol. It had very little violence, it was more like a "light drama" with over the top comedic elements. The series ran for six seasons, a total of 139 episodes, plus one reunion TV movie that aired in 1998. It aired on September 15, 1977, and ended May 1, 1983.
After the release of their first album with their hit single, "I Got You, Babe," back in 1965, Sonny and Cher's popularity skyrocketed. The couple began making television appearances and even more performances. It didn't take long for the couple to get their own show. The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour was a variety show starring the famous couple and ran from August of 1971 until May of 1974. It was canceled due to the couple's divorce, though the duo reunited in 1976 until 1977 for The Sonny & Cher Show, which had an identical format to their old show.
Pictured here is the lovely Dyan Cannon. The actress, director, screenwriter, producer, and editor has been nominated for three Academy Awards over the course of her career. Cannon had appeared on television since the late 1950s but made her film debut in 1960 in The Rise and Fall of Legs Diamond. Her first major film role came in 1969's Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice, which earned her Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations.
On July 22, 1965, she married actor Cary Grant, who was 33 years her senior. She was his fourth wife, and the couple went on to have one daughter, Jennifer (born February 26, 1966). Unfortunately, the divorced on March 21, 1968.

We Continue with Part 12 of Groovy History's "A Look Back at the 60's & 70's in Photographs"

Here we have actor/director and writer Woody Allen with Diane Keaton who first rose to fame for her work in several of Allen's films, including this one here, Annie Hall in the 1970s.
In it, Woody Allen plays comedian Alvy Singer who examines his relationship with nightclub singer Annie Hall (Diane Keaton). He speaks directly to the audience reflecting on his life before Annie including his childhood and early adult years before diving into the story of how they met and all the ups and downs that followed.
The Doors formed in 1965, with vocalist Jim Morrison, keyboardist Ray Manzarek, guitarist Robby Krieger, and drummer John Densmore. In addition to being one of the most influential rock groups of the era, they were also among the most controversial. This was mostly due to Morrison's lyrics and highly unpredictable stage persona. After Morrison was found dead of in a bathtub under suspicious circumstances back in 1971, the band's sales went through the roof but they ended up disbanding in 1973. Continuing on as a trio just wasn't going to cut it.
Quincy, M.E. is a medical mystery-drama television series that aired from 1976 to 1983 on NBC. It stars none other than Jack Klugman, (pictured here) in the title role, as a Los Angeles County medical examiner. One quirk of The Quincy series, is that they often used the same actors for different roles in various episodes. The show follows "the cases of a coroner who investigates suspicious deaths that usually suggest murder."
Writers Tony Lawrence and Lou Shaw received an Edgar Award from the Mystery Writers of America in 1978 for the second-season episode "...The Thigh Bone's Connected to the Knee Bone...".
Hasten Down the Wind is Linda Ronstadt's 1976 Grammy Award-winning album. It was her third straight million-selling album, making her the first female artist in history to accomplish this feat. She took home a Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female in early 1977, it was her second of 11 Grammys. Over the course of her career she has also won three American Music Awards, two Academy of Country Music awards, an Emmy Award, and an ALMA Award! She has over 30 studio albums and 15 greatest hits albums. In 2014 she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and was awarded the National Medal of Arts and Humanities.

More Events and Exhibitions in their other Weekly Feature Section Up Shortly

Nov. 14 -18

The Kick Off Launch Party is always done 1 month before the event.   The Oct. 29 Issue & Nov. 5th Issues had many Photos from this Event Here are the Links OCT 29 2018 and
ALSO ; please go to their website to see the AMAZING LINE UP OF 2018 FILMS, PARTIES, EVENTS, AND PANELS.

Here are a few selected Features from the last few E-Mails sent to us from KWFF. At the Very bottom of this Feature is a Link to The Films

Harmony Korine is a 2018 KWFF Golden Key Award Recipient  and we're thrilled to have him in Key West November 16th!  He'll be on stage at the San Carlos Institute for conversation covering his career that began with the cult-classic
KIDS  and more currently the upcoming release of
THE BEACH BUM.   The discussion will be moderated by KWFF's long time film critic
Eric Kohn of IndieWire.
In fact, Eric just wrote an article about Harmony and the Key West Film Festival the other day.  If you didn't see it, Click Here

Harmony returned to writing and directing film with the story of a very independent man living life by his own rules in 2019's
THE BEACH BUM.   This project meant spending a lot of time in South Florida with Miami and Key West serving as the backdrop for the film (it's currently in post-production).  You can see the influence that our very own Key West has on the characters, plot, and experiences.  On November 16th we bring you an engaging conversation with Harmony and a tease of
Matthew McConaughey, Zac Effron,  and
Isla Fisher  in the film.  Meanwhile, if any of you have good stories of these Hollywood sightings during filming in Key West, we'd love to hear them!

Experience as many of these films and receptions as you want with reserved seating and easy entry with VIP ALL ACCESS or KWFF MEMBERSHIP Package.  Benefits of VIP and Membership also include entry to all the evening receptions inclusive of food and open bar with beer, wine and cocktails.  They are packed with plenty of value and experiences that allow you to fully enjoy the Annual Key West Film Festival where
PASSION MEETS PARADISE every November. Click VIP ALL ACCESS PASS HOLDER
A more enhanced KWFF experience and higher level of support of the KWFF is becoming a KWFF Member.
KWFF 2018 is going to be amazing!  Click PRESS RELEASE and scroll through this email to see why!  Our Annual Critics Focus includes Opening and Closing Night films hand picked by Emily Yoshida of Vulture and Justin Chang of the Los Angeles Times.  Who are their top picks of 2018?

ROMA makes its Florida debut November 14th on Opening Night, chronicling the life of a middle-class family in Mexico during the 1970s.  The film by Oscar winner Alfonso Cuaron has had several award nominations to date at the Gotham Awards and Toronto International Film Festival.  But its recent win for Best Film happened at the Venice Film Festival, taking home the Golden Lion Award!  Last year Guillermo del Toro took home this coveted prize and we all saw what happened with THE SHAPE OF WATER during awards season!  Will history repeat itself with another KWFF Opening Night Spotlight Selection?

Another Florida Premiere is
IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK, a film critic selection that will be the Closing Night Spotlight Selection.  It's coming to KWFF before you'll see it in theaters!
Director Barry Jenkins brings an amazing cast together to tell the story of a woman in Harlem desperately scrambling to prove her fiancé innocent of a crime as the couple expects their first child.  The film has picked up five award nominations at other festivals this year and is generating praise similar to that of
MOONLIGHT, Barry's 2016 critically acclaimed film.  We love seeing this Florida native continue to direct such powerful, emotional, and moving films.

The KWFF 2018 Centerpiece Screening features the latest film by one of Florida's best known documentarians, Miami-based Billy Corben.  Doping scandals across professional sports have made headlines in recent years, but one New York Yankee baseball player and University of Miami alumni, Alex "A-ROD" Rodriguez is the focus of SCREWBALL.   It's the first domestic screening of the film following its premier at DOC NYC just days prior.

Over 30 years after
PLATOON followed a young soldier confronted with the horrors of war and the duality of man, the KWFF brings you a documentary about the making of the Oliver Stone legendary film.
BROTHERS IN ARMS is narrated by Charlie Sheen and includes stories and experiences from Johnny Depp, Willem Dafoe and Kevin Dillon on the low budget, independently made, Academy Award winning film.
Actor Tom Berenger received an Oscar nomination for his role in
PLATOON and we are thrilled that
Tom will be with us in Key West!

The Key West Film Festival is almost upon us and we are looking for volunteers to help us make this event a great success! If you are interested in volunteering with us this year, please click on the KWFF banner above or click the link below to sign up online!
Thank you for your help! If you have any questions please email klt09011028@gmail.com

SATURDAY November 17th - CLOSING NIGHT
Lights, Camera, Action!  It's another full day of screenings across all venues starting as early as 11AM!

6PM at
San Carlos Institute  is where
IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK  will have its Florida Premiere!  After some Q&A as part of our Critics Focus, we'll get ready for the
Annual Key West Film Festival Awards  that will take us through the rest of the evening.
Mangoes
will host the KWFF for drink specials and a great mix of songs from one of our favorite DJs to close out the night.  That venue was awesome last year and we appreciate all the support from Mangoes!

How are we grappling with climate change on individual and collective levels in a place we are actively still creating? Portable Memories in Rising Seas is an ongoing participatory project about sea level rise that connects lived experience with memory and climate change. Uncertainties of climate change are a threat and, at the same time, a catalyst for expression, action, and a renewed sense of belonging. Sponsored by Helen / Ben Harrison Gallery

More of  Part 12 "A Look Back at the 60's & 70's Through Photographs"

Disco clubs were all the rage throughout the 1970s and while all of them boasted similar music and decor only a few clubs became iconic and none were as legendary as New York's Studio 54. The club scene offered a safe haven of acceptance and excitement to those a little on the weird side. People of various professions and social classes could all let loose together and forget the expectations of the world outside.

Bill Murray Dancing with Gildea Radner. The Woodstock generation was thrust into this whole sparkling little world of 70s' disco that embraced their idealism, sexual freedom, and drug use and gave it a place to call home. Everything just came together as a reflection of the times on those mirrored strobe-lit dance floors, in a way that it never will again.
Studio 54 quickly built up a conflicting reputation for itself. It seemed the population was torn, people either absolutely loved the club or couldn't stand it. There didn't seem to be much of an in between.
Not that it mattered, every night without fail, a crowd of people would flock to the doors of the legendary Studio 54 in hopes of getting in. And who could blame them? The place was filled with celebrities who knows who you might run into once through those doors. SPECIAL Editor Note Here :  I worked for Steve Rubell, Ian Schrager, & Jerry and Mimi Rubin as their Director of Yuppie Related Materials. Jerry and Mimi Rubin were the ones that Invented the Term "Network Party - Networking" and we would have every week 5,000 NYC Professionals  "Yuppies" from ALL the Fields in the Clubs from 6-8PM ; and Most stayed until 4AM in One Form or Others ( and Some Stayed after the Doors Closed). Ed

Ed Krane was the Director of Yuppie Related Activity. I hung with Andy Warhol, Bianca, Mick, & Jerry, Elton, Verducci, & sometime's would be invited home to the really good  After Parties.
I so look forward to the  KWFF Showing of the Movie "Studio 54" Tom Finn (One of the Studio 54 & Palladium Dj's is a Good Friend)

Pictured here are The Village People performing live at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, California, circa 1970. As can be seen, by the outstretched arms here, the audience is singing and dancing along to the "YMCA."

Pictured here is the man responsible for the creation of pop art, Andy Warhol. Surrounded by beautiful models and adoring fans, he is enjoying the atmosphere at Studio 54. Warhol was yet another famous frequenter of the club that always seemed to attract an excessive amount of attention.
For Andy Warhol's 50th birthday in August of 1978, co-owner Steve Rubell went above and beyond the norm, gifting Warhol a roll of 5,000 free drink tickets in addition to a large silver garbage can that was stuffed with about a $1,000 worth of crisp dollar bills. Warhol said it was the best present he ever received.

Pictured here are
The Jacksons  performing a concert, circa 1975. From a musical standpoint, Disco reigned supreme and artists like Donna Summer and Gloria Gaynor were asked to come into clubs for live performances. But for the most part, much of the entertainment was in-house and came from DJ's and the club's provocative and flamboyant staff. And of course, there were always free shows provided by the unique clientele Disco clubs attracted.

If you are a fan of subversive or fabulist satire, you won't want to miss a free reading by award-winning author Matthew Pitt hosted by the Monroe County Public Library Key West in the Palms Garden on Wednesday, November 14 at 6:00pm.  Pitt will entertain and illuminate with readings from his two collections of short fiction , "These Are Our Demands" and "Attention Please Now," and a brief discussion of his unique writing process.

Startling, humorous, dark, and beautiful, it is clear why "These Are Our Demands" (by Engine Press) is recognized as one of the best books published in the 12 Midwest states in 2017 by the Midwest Book Awards program. The first-place winner in the Short Story- Anthology category, Pitt's second book "lures you in with the promise of comfort, and then pulls down the straps and sends you on an unexpected wild ride" (New Pages review).

There has been a dramatic drop in the number motorcycle and scooter crashes in Key West this year, thanks to increased enforcement and education efforts funded by a grant by the Florida Department of Transportation.
As of the end of October, there was a 64 percent drop in the number of motorcycle and scooter crashes when compared to the average number for each of the three previous years. In 2018, there have been 103 crashes. The prior three years have averaged 303 crashes annually.
The number of motorcycle and scooter crashes with injuries also dropped by a whopping 67 percent with 67 so far in 2018. The average number for the previous three years was 207.
The FDOT grant allowed the Key West Police Department to dedicate officers to educating riders and enforcing motorcycle and scooter laws. In addition, as an important part of educating operators, officer visited local scooter rental businesses and spoke to the employees about Florida laws.
There are still two months left in the calendar year, so the percentages could change but, overall, the dedicated effort is sure to have prevented a number of crashes.

A few of the Dogs and Cats Available for Adoption to follow this Message from The Tropic Cinema

A Celebration of Art and Film

To show off the renovated Tropic Cinema, welcome back our seasonal residents, and bring you more of the movies you love, the Tropic is proud to announce our first ever annual calendar of films! The Tropic Cinema Annual Season features one-of-a-kind series, classic films, monthly themes and much more!

Throughout the Tropic Cinema season you will experience cult favorites and Monday night Classics, tasteful wine and beer pairings, fabulous galas and fundraisers. We will also present Key West on the Silver Screen, our famed Cinematheque Series, 4 Nights 4 Justice and The Tour of Southern Circuit Filmmakers.

The  Cult Classic  events will be scheduled eight times through the year. These films will be complete with costumes, specials, art and more - from  The Rocky Horror Picture Show  to a dress-up night for  Elf  to a 4/20 evening watching  Wizard of Oz/Dark Side of the Moon .

Five times during the year we will show a  boozy classic  - think  Bottle Shock, Cocktail  and  Strange Brew  -- all paired with an appropriate wine, beer or cocktail.

Galas and Fundraisers  include the Tropic's annual Oscars Gala Event -- a can't-miss event that shows off a formal Key West (think shorts and cummerbunds). We even sprinkle in one-of-a-kind events such as our upcoming Sleepover (a night of marathon movies) and the Popcorn Pop-Off Fundraiser that follows National Popcorn Lovers' Day.

Our island is full of creative minds and we're excited to feature their work! During our  Key West on the Silver Screen  series we'll host local filmmakers' screenings, along with live events like Key West Drunk History, the 72-Hour Film Challenge and Key West Mystery Theater 3000.
4 Nights 4 Justice  is an annual series of documentary films covering a broad range of social justice issues. Thanks to generous funding from the Michael Dively Social Justice, Diversity Endowment at the Community Foundation of the Florida Keys, and other community donors, we are able to screen these vital films and meet the filmmakers in person. You don't want to miss this series.

The  Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers  brings the best of independent film to communities across the South. As a Screening Partner, the Tropic works collaboratively with South Arts to find exciting new programming and provide our audiences with the opportunity to meet filmmakers.

This year we're reviving our popular  Cinematheque Series  to bring you more frequent screenings of the best in new independent film. Cinematheque is your source for festival favorites, audience requests and up-and-coming directors.

The Tropic is pleased to continue bringing you live performances within our  cultural series  from the Royal Ballet and Royal Opera House in London. We'll also feature art exhibitions, architecture tours, Broadway and more.

And winter in Key West would not be the same without our  Monday Night Classics:  everything from Tennessee Williams to classic Westerns. You'll need to buy your tickets early-these sell out every year.

It's going to be an amazing year at the movies.
Don't miss out -- join us at the Tropic every week!
