Google Glass Can Help Kids w/Autism Improve Socialization Skills

Researchers say they have more evidence that an at-home intervention using Google Glass boosts socialization and learning in kids with autism.
A study looking at 71 children on the spectrum ages 6 to 12 found that those who used Google Glass in addition to participating in applied behavior analysis, or ABA, therapy saw greater gains than children who received ABA alone.

As Suicides Rise, Insurers Find Ways to Deny Mental Health Coverage

The U.S. is in the midst of a mental health crisis. In 2017, 47,000 Americans died by suicide and 70,000 from drug overdoses. And 17.3 million adults suffered at least one major depressive episode. The
Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act, a landmark law passed more than a decade ago, requires insurers to provide comparable coverage for mental health and medical treatments. Even so, insurers are denying claims, limiting coverage, and finding other ways to avoid complying with the law.

New Causes of Autism Found in 'Junk' DNA

Leveraging artificial intelligence techniques, researchers have demonstrated that mutations in so-called 'junk' DNA can cause autism. The study, published May 27 in Nature Genetics, is the first to functionally link such mutations to the neurodevelopmental condition.

Schools Struggle To Serve 'Twice Exceptional' Students

To Eva Santiago, her son's education has always felt like an impossible dilemma.
Before elementary school, the boy was diagnosed with autism, ADHD and anxiety, and in kindergarten he was placed in a small, self-contained class for kids with disabilities.
But he was articulate and curious, so when he was 6, Santiago took him to be tested for the city's exclusive gifted-and-talented program. She was pleased when his score earned him one of the coveted spots.

Study Suggests that Infants with High Risk for Autism May be Less Able to Differentiate Speech Patterns

A new study found that infants at high risk for autism were less attuned to differences in speech patterns than low-risk infants. The findings suggest that interventions to improve language skills should begin during infancy for those at high risk for autism.

It's here! Most families look forward to summer's relaxation and lazy days. However, the lack of routine and structure can be the cause of great stress for families of children with special needs.
School routines are predictable and provide consistency and the transition to summer may be a difficult one. In addition, the skills your child has gained in school should be carried over into the summer to stop any regression. No ideas? Feeling overwhelmed?

For many kids, summer vacation holds the promise of months of school-free fun. But for children with sensory processing issues, summer can be a challenging time.
From the sand on the beach to the fireworks on the Fourth of July, the season is full of exciting but potentially difficult experiences. An unfamiliar playground, a visit to an amusement park, a messy ice cream cone: all involve sensory surprises that can be overwhelming or upsetting if a child is unusually sensitive to light, noise, and tactile sensations. But with some preparation and planning parents can help kids with sensory issues get the most out of summertime.
