AMO PLANS LIVING WELL

November 2018
Keeping You Healthy this Fall
The transition to the shorter and busier days of fall can be a challenge. To help ease the change, we've put together some Autumn Wellness Tips to get you ready for the fall months and keep your mental and physical health in check.

Boost Your Immune System
The easiest way you can do this is by drinking plenty of water, washing your hands often to prevent sickness, and eating nutritious foods. Here are a few other simple ways to boost your immune system this fall:

The Digestive System when it is working properly, germs have less of a chance to have a negative effect. Maintain good digestive health by taking probiotics. Remember these are best taken on an empty stomach.

Stay Hydrated: drinking enough water is important, especially when it's cold and during flu season. Keep your immunity up by drinking plenty of water to stave off infection. Staying hydrated helps your body naturally eliminate toxins and other bacteria that may cause illness. Drink the recommended eight ounces per day, and four to eight ounces per every 15 minutes of activity if you're exercising.

Vitamin C is associated with cold and flu prevention, so don't underestimate the power of consuming good food sources of this vitamin such as kiwi, strawberries, oranges, yellow peppers, kale and broccoli.

Vitamin E. This antioxidant nutrient helps slow down the signs of aging, while strengthening the body's cells that fight infection. If you eat foods rich in vitamin E such as almonds, avocado or Atlantic salmon or take supplements, you'll have an added weapon to fight off bacteria and other viruses.

Get Enough Sleep. Sleep plays an important role in immunity. While you sleep, the immune system releases proteins called cytokines, which are needed to fight infection. Being sleep deprived reduces the amount of cytokines produced, likewise reducing the infection-fighting antibodies you need. For an adult, the Mayo Clinic suggests that you get at least 7- 8 hours of sleep per night. Teenagers need nine to 10 hours of sleep. School-aged children may need 10 or more hours of sleep.

Exercising Regularly boosts blood flow, which circulates white blood cells through the body. White blood cells are the cells of the immune system that protect the body against disease. The immune system responds to exercise by producing more of these cells.

Manage Your Stress
Deep breathing exercises can help activate your parasympathetic nervous system, which controls the relaxation response. The goal of deep breathing is to focus your awareness on your breath, making it slower and deeper. When you breathe in deeply through your nose, your lungs fully expand and your belly rises. This helps slow your heart rate, allowing you to feel more peaceful and less stressful.

In the Month of November
There are many things you can do to stay healthy in the fall months, and boosting your immune system is the number one way to fight off sickness. Managing your stress, eating clean,
healthy foods, and getting plenty of rest will go a long way to support a strong immune system.

Have a great November!
