FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK
As I scan the bookshelves in my office, I do not see a principal's guide to school threats. If there was such a book, I believe all parties involved followed it to the letter. We listened as students followed our request of, "see something, hear something, feel something, say something." Our School Resource Officer and the Delaware Police Department spent endless hours investigating and apprehending the suspect. We communicated to our school community and to our staff with transparency and clarity. Based on the information at the time, school was cancelled until the investigation was concluded. The safety of our students and staff was always at the forefront. When word from the police department indicated that school could resume safely, we communicated once more to our school community and staff that Hayes would be open on Friday.
We made changes to some of our practices at school to insure our students are safe. I met with our faculty and staff early Friday morning to brief them on the situation and inform them of some of the changes to our safety protocols. I communicated to all students at 7:30 am on Friday and reassured them that Hayes was safe. I spoke to them again at 12:00 pm to reinforce some of the changes and thank them for helping us keep Hayes safe. We will keep outside doors locked in the morning till 7:00 am (students are able to come in the vestibule at 6:45 out of the elements), we will keep all doors secure during the school day and limit hallway traffic for safety purposes. Hats and hoods are not permitted in the building. Suspicious backpacks, vehicles, and lockers will be searched by school administration.
I believe we have the finest teaching faculty, student body, and support staff around. We have a positive school culture and we know we can overcome anything if we do it together. Thank you parents for your support of our efforts and I promise you that your son or daughter's safety is our number one priority. It has always been and always will be!
Thank you,
Dr. Ric Stranges

Attendance
EARLY DISMISSAL FROM SCHOOL
Just as a reminder,
please send a note with your child if he or she needs to leave school early for an appointment or any other reason that is known ahead of time. The student should present the note to the attendance office first thing in the morning at which time the note will be stamped to allow the student to leave class at the appropriate time. This will limit the number of classroom interruptions when students have to be called out of class throughout the day.
Additionally, if you will be picking your child up from school and have not submitted a note,
please come into the welcome center to sign your child out for the day.
We are happy to accommodate unexpected and emergency situations that inevitably arise, but trying as much as possible to adhere to the official dismissal policy will help things run more smoothly, protect the safety of our students, and allow for maximum instruction time in the classroom. Thank you for your cooperation.
