Our Mission Statement

We of Joy Lutheran Church foster
grace-filled relationships with Christ
through worship, fellowship, and service.

Gospel: Mark 12:38-44
Widows are visible everywhere in today's readings.  Jesus denounces those scribes who pray impressive prayers but devour widows' houses.  He commends the poor widow who in his view gave far more than the major donors.  Jesus doesn't see her simply as an object of compassion or charity.  She, like the widow of Zarephath who shares her last bit of food with Elijah, does something of great importance.

Other Joy-full News

The Breakfast Club meets tomorrow morning at 8:00AM for breakfast and will start working on some building maintenance projects about 9:00AM.  Please join us for one or both!

Counters Needed - STILL!
Do you know what happens to your offering after it goes into the offering plate?  Well, before it can used to support the ministry of Jesus, it has to be counted, recorded, and deposited. That work is done by two volunteers right after worship ends. It's a quick, but important part of our stewardship of God's gifts and your financial support.  It generally takes 20-30 minutes.

We need some more people who are willing to sign up for this important ministry.  There are instructions and training is available. Volunteers take turns signing up, much like we do for our other volunteers positions, which helps to spread out the Sundays you serve.

If you are willing to help, please sign upon the bulletin board in the narthex.  Look for the sheet that says, "Sunday Worship Assistants." Thank you.

See's Candy Fundraiser for JCDC!
The JCDC annual fundraiser is underway!  Michelle Kruse will be taking orders for See's Candy after church on November 11.  The money raised will go toward playground improvements and summer program supplies.  We greatly appreciate all the support we receive from the people of Joy!

Thanksgiving Blessing
Joy Lutheran Church has been asked to contribute  100 cans of peas (We have 108 and have MET OUR GOAL!  Thank you! )  and 100 cans of cranberry sauce (have 79)

As the host location, Joy provides refreshments during the event; so, if you're baking something scrumptious in the next few weeks and want to double the batch to put one in the freezer for Thanksgiving Blessing, that would be wonderful! The sign-up sheet for Joy Lutheran volunteer positions is on the Opportunities bulletin board. We are also collecting new winter coats - no gently used ones, please.

To volunteer for one of the positions available through Love INC, register at:   http://signup.com/go/XvimuXz

We also need cookies and other refreshments to share with our neighbors during the event.

Christmas Letter from the Munks:

We were blessed with good weather through out the trip, even the snow in Canada wasn't troubling.  We had perfect weather once we got out of Canada, all the way to Arizona, where we met lots of rain.  This is the 11th wettest for October on record for AZ. and things are greener than we expected in and around Tucson.

One side trip took us to Lenore ID, where we stayed with Doug and Janet Boyer (Doug was my boss at the E.R. Print shop and church friends).   While there, Low and behold, Becky and Hal Tucker drove 3+ hours to meet up with us at Doug and Janets.  Becky & I  worked together for Doug. Even before that,  I enjoyed their son and daughter in my first grade class .  Seeing them all was the treat of a life time, for sure.  Then we spent a day in Mountain Home ID. to visit a mining friend and discovered Michael Bowser, another friend in the same area and had coffee with him. We sat in church together, and he even shovelded snow off our house roof once.

We are living in an unfurnished apartment in Tucson. We have airbeds, folding chairs and tables, no tv, but computers and their problems are keeping us busy. Laundry is down stairs. It's sort of like camping in luxury with full kitchen and bathroom indoors, even!! NICE.

Our address on Saddlebrook Ranch will be in Feb.: 61820 E Happy Jack Trail; Oracle, AZ 85623.

This song, words by Becky Tucker for Carol to sing as she traveled:   They'll be coming down the Alcan when they come, (sing twice); They'll be racing with the snow, and no more ten below, (repeat first line.) Carol added: They'll be shoveling no more snow and No more lawn to mow, (repeat first line.)

This song: words by Carol: Oh give me a home between Phoenix and Tombstone, where the cougars and badgers all play, where prickly pear grows with tall suaraughs (saw-war-os) and the skies are bright sunny all day.

Love from Old Alaskans and New Arizonans,
Bob and Carol

(Their complete letter with photos is on the bulletin board outside Pastor's office.  Carol tells me that even though they are not in their new home yet, the mailing address can be used now.)
