In the classroom
Wednesday in Kevin Martin's AP BioPsych Bundle class students were learning about the details of neuron function and how it applies to sending messages around the brain and body.  This  class dance number  is one way students try to understand the complex interactions of sodium and potassium as they move across membranes of our neurons.  They will then apply these concepts to a psychological case study that focuses on the neuron and make a video explaining what is going on to a patient that has recently been diagnosed with a particular neurological disorder.

Chess Club
Congratulations to 8 members of the HUHS Chess Club for competing well in the Reserve section of the Individual State Championships this past weekend.  Tying for fourth place overall, freshman Vince Hesprich won four out of his five games in the two-day tournament.  He took home the trophy for the best unrated finisher, meaning anyone who had never played in a nationally-ranked tournament.

There were 84 players in the Reserve section from all over the state.  29 others were unrated like Vince.  More details and photos on the chess club web page:  https://www.huhs.org/activities/chess.cfm

ACT Testing
Looking for FREE  resources to prepare your student(s) for the ACT? Click  HERE  to go to the ACT Academy website!

All students considering a two or four-year college experience are reminded to take the ACT test during their junior year.  Students can register for the ACT at
www.actstudent.org. When registering, students will need the HUHS school code, which is 500-850.   Please remember to check the website to see if the college(s) your son or daughter is considering requires or recommends the ACT writing test.   The test fee for the ACT is $50.50 and the ACT with writing is $67.00.   If you feel you cannot afford the test fee, please ask your child's counselor if you are eligible for a fee waiver.
HUHS is an ACT test center for all testing dates (except February 9).  The test dates for the 2018-2019 school year are:
October 27, 2018            December 8, 2018                 February 9, 2019                    April 13, 2019                 June 8, 2019                     July 13, 2019

Note:   Please keep in mind all juniors are required by state law to take the ACT at the high school on February 20 (no cost to the student on February 20).    When considering whether or not to sign up to take the February 9 or April 13 ACT, it may be best for students to take the February 20 test, then decide whether or not to retake the test in June or July based upon February results.

Boys & Girls Club Fundraiser
Below, please find information about the Boys & Girls Club of Washington County annual event, Taste of Washington County. The Hartford BGC has experienced significant growth over the past few years, serving a large number of area students and families. It provides a service to parents who may have to work beyond the end of the normal school day and don't want their children to go home to an empty house. It also provides a supervised environment where children can get their homework done, learn important life skills, and meet new friends.  The BGC recently moved into Lincoln Elementary School, and now offers a morning and afterschool program.  It's a great "night out," with lots of fun, people, eats, and beverages.

This is the Boys & Girls Clubs of Washington County largest fundraiser. Besides all the wonderful food and drink, you can purchase items from their silent auction tables. Unique items in time for Christmas gifts. You can get a great start on your Christmas shopping while supporting the Boys & Girls Clubs of Washington County at the same time! Winning! Please contact Scott Helms for tickets.

Record Set, Four Swimmers Heading For State;
OriOwls Have Great Sectional Meet
The 200 Medley Relay of Olivia Meinberg, Caitlin Simonz, Paige Dulski, and Irene Wilson broke the team record set two years ago by Olivia and Cora Meinberg, Malory Smits, and Carly DeBack.  Irene's 23.3 split was amazing.
Our program qualified no relays last year for WIAA State, but this year's 200 Free Relay is in the thick of things.  They may be seeded 13th, but all these teams are within 2 seconds of each other.  Paige Dulski, Irene Wilson, Shayna Krist, and Olivia Meinberg will be sharpening their tools all week long.  Olivia's 23.0 split caught some attention.
The 400 Free Relay, seeded at 4:06.88. They went a 3:56.28.
At WIAA State this Saturday, Olivia Meinberg is seeded 4th in the 50 Free, and Irene Wilson is seeded 9th.  We have some amazing sprinters on this team, and their training taper has been geared toward State this year.
Olivia will also be in the 2nd of 3 heats in the 100 Free, ready to beat her best time and be among the top finishers.
The time drops at Sectionals were amazing.  Skyler Bertz lit up the team when she dropped a full 8.9 seconds off her 200 Free time, only to outdo herself in the 500 Free when she achieved her goal of breaking 6 minutes with a 5:59.90.  She dropped 20 seconds in the last two weeks in that race.
Despite being impressively sick, we knew Shayna Krist was going to have a big day when she went that 26.27 in the 50 Free.  That's a drop of .54 seconds.  She did her first-ever 25 second split in the 200 Free Relay, dropping .8 seconds.  We needed that.
Alyssa Simonz knocked 4.8 seconds off her 200 Free, and 2.02 seconds off her 100 Back.  Her 2 second drop in the 400 Relay was a big part of that 400 Free Relay success.
Rylie Christnovich dropped time in her 200 Free and 100 Free, and was also a big part of that 400 Free Relay.
Caitlin Simonz took 2.06 seconds off her best 100 Breaststroke, Maria Graziano dropped 3.55 seconds in her 100 Back.

2018-2019 Information

New This Year - Clubs & Activities Online Registration
Starting for the 2018-19 school year, all students wishing to participate in activities, clubs or sports will need to complete the Online Forms through Skyward Family/Student access.  All steps need to be marked as completed including step #8 "SUBMIT SY19 ATHLETIC/CO-CURRICULAR FORMS".  Online Forms only need to be completed once per school year, so if a student participates in a sport as well as a club or activity the Online Forms only need to complete once.

If the student is only participating in an activity or club but will not be participating in a sport, they may mark step 3 complete and do not need to have a Physical Clearance Form completed by their Physician.

Once the online forms have been completed, the student will then need to pick up an "Orange Card" from the Co-Curricular Office clearing them to participate in their activity or club. Activity/Club organizers will inform students of this change at the first sign up meeting and collect the orange cards before the next regularly scheduled meeting.
