VETERANS DAY - NOVEMBER 11TH

A PRAYER
Compassionate God, Source of Mercy, we pay tribute to those who have served our country, to express our gratitude for their courage and selflessness, both those among us today and those of generations past.
This nation, built by those born of this soil and those who have come here from all the corners of the earth, is on a continual journey toward its destiny.
May we never let down those who have served in defense of this country.
May we uphold the values of freedom, of the inherent dignity of every human being, by our own right conduct, by the kindness and tolerance we show to one another.
 May we lead the world by example, and become, in the words of Isaiah, a light to the nations.
Then will the labors and sacrifices of these veterans be honored not in words alone, but by our deeds.

A MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI

THE FOLLOWING LETTER TO THE EDITOR APPEARED IN THE NOVEMBER 7, 2018 ISSUE OF THE SANDPAPER.
Rabbi "Incredibly Moved" by an Outpouring of Love
This past Wednesday, in response to the murder of 11 Jewish people during prayer services in a Pittsburgh synagogue, who were targeted solely because they were Jewish, I posted the following on my Face Book page:
The best way to combat the darkness of hate is with the light of love. We can begin to heal the broken world with the love of self, the love of others, the love of community, the love of tradition, and the love of God. This coming Shabbat (Sabbath) let the JCC of LBI provide the light and the love; let us respond to the hate and violence with love and unity. If you need a space to think, to pray, to be in community - come join us. Jews and non-Jews, regular synagogue attendees, and those who have never set foot in a synagogue, all are welcome.
One is never quite sure how such an invitation will be received. In this case, the uncertainty was further increased because the request was made on LBI after the summer season.
I cannot express in mere words how incredibly moved I was by the community's response.
Indeed, the
sanctuary of the
Jewish Community Center
was filled for the
interfaith services we held on both Friday and Saturday. Jews and non-Jews, prayed together in peaceful solidarity. As a community we prayed, sang, cried, cared, loved, harmonized, and began the process of healing. Psalm 133 expresses what I felt as I looked out upon the beautiful multi-faith souls: "Behold, How good and pleasant it is when brothers and sisters dwell together in unity." I express my deepest gratitude and humblest thanks to my brothers who were present and helped me to bring comfort: Father John Frambes, Pastor William McGowan, and Pastor Roy Minnix.
The outpouring of love from, and between, faith communities has helped to forge a bond that I know will not be broken.
We each carry the light of God's love and mercy. One person's light can push away the darkness, but many lights together can make sure that the darkness does not return.
At a time of unspeakable sadness, we have comforted each other and created hope. As Elie Wiesel famously said, "The opposite of love is not hate, it is indifference."
The Jewish Community Center of Long Beach Island extends its many thanks to each faith community on LBI. We felt hugged by the Holy One. We are a blessed community.

THE WEEK THAT WAS....
|
Last Shabbat in answer to the unspeakable events at The Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, the JCC of LBI participated in
#SHOW UP FOR SHABBAT, a call to Jews and non-Jews to come to services as a show of solidarity.
At a usually quiet time of the year, Jews and non-Jews in our community filled the pews in our synagogue. With so many folks there who were not familiar with a Shabbat service, Rabbi Jay conducted a service that was both moving and comfortable for all those in attendance.
Kol Hakavod to our Rabbi and to all those who made their way to the JCC last Shabbat.
 Am Yisrael Chai, a non profit Holocaust Education and Awareness Organization, has developed an initiative to plant 1.5 million daffodils around the world in memory of the 1.5 million children who perished in the Holocaust and in support for children suffering in humanitarian crises in the world today.
The shape and color of the daffodils represent the Yellow stars that Jews were forced to wear during the Holocaust. Yellow is the color of remembrance. Daffodils represent our poignant hope for the future. They are resilient and return with a burst of color each Spring, signifying hope, renewal and beauty. The daffodils also honor those who survived the Holocaust and went on to build new lives after this dark and difficult period.
Here are Irene Babst and brand new members Noralyn & David Carroll helping to plant 125 bulbs in the front of the JCC last Sunday morning. Thank you to the Carrolls who brought this program to our attention and to our other planters Howard Fruchterman, Michael Babst and Rose Valentine.
