Project Update - California Drive Roundabout
A portion of the newly constructed roundabout has opened to vehicular traffic. Please exercise caution and reduce speeds. Drivers should expect a shift in traffic lanes.

During this second stage of construction, please:
- Reduce speeds to 25 miles per hour.
- Continue to use detour routes as vehicle access to Lorton Avenue, Bellevue, and California Drive is limited.
- Expect traffic lane shifts around portions of the newly constructed roundabout.
- Watch for pedestrians since pedestrian access around the construction zone will remain open.
- Be aware that all businesses and the Caltrain parking lot will remain open during all stages of construction.

Environmental Tip of the Week
Be a steward of a clean bay by picking up litter in Burlingame… and, of course, by never littering!
Why? Common litter such as cigarette butts, plastic straws, and food wrappers enter storm drains that flow directly to the San Francisco Bay, and are
not sorted out. These pollutants are often consumed by sea life and expose our bay to toxins. Learn more about how you can prevent pollution at

Parks and Recreation Department Seeks Public Input
The Parks & Recreation Department is forming the Washington Park Playground Committee to help develop the new playground plan, which will include equipment options for the Park. The Department will select three community members to be part of the Committee.
Committee members will be asked to attend several evening meetings and a final presentation at a Parks & Recreation Commission meeting. The process is expected to take several months. Please note, Committee membership is for adults only; no children will be included in the meetings. If you would like to be considered as a neighborhood representative for the Committee,

Recycling Etc.
Your recycling questions answered!
What are the most commonly mis-recycled items?
- Pizza boxes - Most people still think these boxes can go into the recycling since they are cardboard, but due to the food residue and grease, they must go into the compost.
- Styrofoam - Even though Styrofoam may have the recycling symbol on it, it must go into the garbage. Please consider taking Styrofoam containers to Green Citizen to recycle them for a small fee.
- Plastic film and plastic bags - All soft plastic must go into the garbage. Instead, try to reuse plastic bags as much as you can or recycle them at a drop-off center.
- Tetrapaks - Tetrapaks may have the recycling symbol on them, but due to the multiple layers, they are considered garbage.
Follow-up: About those expired child car seats...
Previously, we mentioned that expired child car seats can only be disposed in the black garbage bin. We've since learned of two better options for disposal. Thank you to one of our readers for pointing out these tips!
- Trade in your old seat at Target through their Car Seat Trade-in Event and receive a 20 percent off coupon on select baby gear (including a new car seat). Visit their website for more information.
- Drop off the car seat at a local California Highway Patrol (CHP) office. The closest location to Burlingame is in Redwood City. Call the office CHP office at 650-369-6261 to confirm their hours.

Repair Cafe
Saturday, September 15, 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Bring your broken household items to the last Repair Cafe of 2018. You can bring up to three items for repair, and a team of volunteers will try to fix them. Repairs are free (up to $10 in parts).
Popular items at Repair Cafe have included toasters, lamps, toys, and clocks. Some volunteers can repair costume jewelry (earring backings, clasp fixes), and one volunteer will be available for small sewing repairs.
This event is a fun and collaborative volunteer opportunity. If you are interested in joining the Library's team of volunteer fixers, email or call Cynthia Rider at

or 650-922-4654. Most volunteers bring their own tools, and the Library will buy some repair parts such as lamp switches, fuses, washers, glues, etc.
Also, there will be two e-waste bins set up for free e-waste recycling. The bins will be set up from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., or until the boxes fill up. The following items will not be accepted: microwaves, refrigerators, and any items over 100 pounds.

Burlingame's Bayfront Cleanup Day is an annual waterway and land cleanup held on the third Saturday of September. It overlaps with California Coastal Cleanup Day, which brings the community together to remove trash from our waterways and protect our marine environment.

Living With Your Creek Open House

The City of Burlingame’s storm drain system consists of natural creeks (El Portal/Trousdale, Mills, Easton, Sanchez, Terrace, Burlingame, and Ralston) that convey stormwater runoff from the hills to the Bay. Proper maintenance of the seven creeks is critical to protect homes, businesses, and transportation networks from flooding.
The City invites you to an informational open house where you can learn more about your nearby creek, methods to protect the creek to ensure water quality, suggestions for best practices, and local vendors that can assist you with landscaping, design, and permitting requirements. City representatives will be available from the Public Works and Community Development Departments to answer your questions.

Fifteenth Annual Burlingame Pet Parade

Come join the fun! Every participant will receive a souvenir ribbon. Immediately following the parade, judges will select the Best School Float and award $500 and $250 to the first- and second-place winning schools (which must be in San Mateo County). Ribbons will be awarded to winners of the Best Pet Trick; Most Unusual Pet; Best Dressed Pet; and Most Original Float, Group or Wagon (non-school category). A “float” can be as simple as a decorated bicycle, wagon or kiddie car. Only non-motorized floats are eligible, and each float must include at least one pet. No political entries are permitted, but all types of pets are welcome. Children without pets are encouraged to bring stuffed animals. Groups are encouraged to identify themselves with a banner or sign.

Burlingame Neighborhood Network's 6th Annual Emergency Drill

All Burlingame residents are invited to participate in the Burlingame Neighborhood Network's (BNN) sixth annual Citywide Emergency Drill.
You’ll learn how work together with neighbors and support one another following a disaster, and how to access the emergency communications network. With your participation, your neighborhood may also qualify for a free cache of emergency supplies valued at $550.
Led by the BNN, this exercise is supported by the Central County Fire Department, the Burlingame Police Department, Burlingame CERTs, and local HAM radio operators. It will take place on multiple blocks throughout Burlingame. Adults and children 10 and older can take active roles. It’s free.
