Talking to Our Kids about Race on Thursday, November 15th
The Whittier Elementary PTA's Diversity and Inclusion Committee is pleased to welcome Seattle-based author and activist Sharon H. Chang for a community dialogue. We will develop shared language around privilege and oppression, build tools for having tough talks, and equip ourselves not only to have more transformative race conversations within our families, but also to act for change.

This is a free event for not only fam ilies of Whittier Elementary but for all parents and community members who would like to join us.

We are excited to announce that we will be offering childcare for current Whittier students during this event. A snack and activities will be provided. Babes in arms are welcome to stay with their parents. A huge thank you to Mr. Buck for making this possible!

IMPORTANT!- CHANGE for Flu Shot Clinic
Whittier Elementary is scheduled to have a Flu clinic on November 14 th  2018.
Nurses from the  Visiting Nurse Association  will be here at Whittier on the 14 th   to provide the flu vaccination.

Seattle Schools had to make a change to a new flu vaccine provider. Due to the change in the flu vaccine provider,   families who previously signed the flu shot consent will need to complete a new Vaccination Consent Form.

We apologize for any inconvenience caused by the change of vendors. The form is also available at the Whittier front office. We are working hard to keep students and staff healthy and in school. Thank you for your patience!

Picture Retake Day is Thursday, November 15 th
Yuen Lui will be back for picture retakes on November 15 th  from 8am-12pm.
 
If your student did not have a picture taken you can pre-order packages online now using this link:

If you are unhappy with the original photos taken and want retakes, please have your student bring in their original pictures on November 15 th  and turn them in when they get their photo retaken.
Kindergarten/First Grade Performance on Nov. 16
In order to highlight our “Attitudes of Gratitude”, there will be a special Thanksgiving/Veteran’s Day Performance by our Kindergarten and First grade Wildcats. The performance will be on Friday, November 16 at 1:15 pm.

Please come watch our littlest Wildcats strut their stuff!
Sign Up for JazzCats
Enrollment is now open for the first session of the “JazzCats” Jazz Band, led by instrumental music teacher Mark Oesterle. This session will run from early March through June. What a great opportunity for a young musician to get more time on their instrument playing in an ensemble setting, and to learn the art of improvisation and America’s great art form: Jazz!

WHO: Open to 4th and 5th Grade Elementary Instrumental Musicians. Jazz
instruments include trumpets, saxophones, flutes, clarinets, and trombones. Rhythm
section includes piano, drums, bass and guitar.

WHEN: Thursday afternoons from 3:30 to 4:30 pm. There will be 13 classes during this
session, which runs every Thursday from November 8th until March 7th.
NOTE: NO JAZZ on December 20th before Winter Break. Performance date of March 7th at Nathan Hale HS.

WHERE: Salmon Bay School Band Room. Enter on east side of Salmon Bay School, located at 1810 NW 65th St.

Whittier Ice Skating Party on November 20th
Bring your family and join your friends for the annual Whittier Ice Skating Party at Highland Ice Arena, 18005 Aurora Avenue North, in Shoreline! Spend a few hours having fun on Tuesday, November 20th from 10:00am - 12:00pm. Whether you are just learning to skate or you are perfecting your triple salchow, we want to see your skills. You can bring your own skates or rent them for $4. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Dress in warm layers and long socks are advised.
