¡Seas una Bendición!
As you pull into our driveway, you will notice that our new Blessing Pantry is stocked and ready to serve our neighbors with food, clothing, and other supplies. The church used to have a box at the end of the sidewalk leading up to the front door, where people would leave donations. However, the box got dirty, was vulnerable to bugs and other critters, and was not visible from Wolf Road. As I looked at this dirty and dilapidated box, I thought there must be a better way to do hunger ministry at St. Helena's. I had conversations with several of you about this, and you agreed.

I first saw one of these "blessing boxes" or "little pantries" in an National Public Radio news article online, and immediately thought that even our little church could do something like this. So, we applied for a small grant from the diocesan Hunger Commission to build it. Keith Plikuhn, who has undertaken many projects to beautify and improve our building, generously agreed to build it. I shared with him some pictures of similar pantries online, and expected a small, birdhouse-sized box. Keith said he'd come up with some solution for how to keep the clever racoons out of it. Of course, Keith never does anything by halves, and what we got was much larger and much more elegant food pantry that took my breath away.

I hope the sight of this new Blessing Pantry will inspire you, as it has inspired me. It is a sign for us that even a small church can do a lot of good in an area with a lot of unmet needs. It is a sign for the local community that we at St. Helena's care about the welfare of our neighbors. And, finally, it is a sign of the new life and vitality that present in our congregation, which has struggled for a good part of its life. The Blessing Pantry is one sign among many that we are growing and thriving. May we now use it to help others to grow and thrive, as well.

Al entrar en nuestro camino de entrada, notarás que nuestra nueva Despensa de Bendiciones está surtida y lista para servir a nuestros vecinos con comida, ropa y otros suministros. Bring Supplies for Our New Blessing Pantry | Trae Suministros para Nuestra Nueva Despensa de Bendiciones
Every Sunday at the offertory, in addition to bread, wine, and our financial contributions, we will offer non-perishable supplies in order to keep our new Blessing Pantry stocked. We are asking all of you to contribute items as your resources permit. Since stocking the pantry on Monday, much of the food is already gone. We will also be scheduling a food collection after the holidays in one of the local neighborhoods to reach out to our neighbors and include them in this important ministry. Examples of useful items to donate are: canned goods, boxed food, hygiene products, diapers and baby formula, socks, and scarves. Please check expiration dates for food, as we will not be able to include food that has passed its expiration date. Thank you in advance for your wonderful generosity.

Hogwarts Academy Offers "Potions" Class This Sunday! | ¡Academia Hogwarts Ofrece "Pociones mágicas" Este Domingo!
Ever wonder how holy water, or the chrism for baptism, or the ashes for Ash Wednesday are made? This Sunday, we will turn St. Helena's into a laboratory and make many of these together as we gather for the Potions class for our Hogwarts Academy Christian formation program. Roll up your sleeves, get your hands dirty, and make holy things for God's holy people.

Part of good stewardship—ensuring the continued vitality of a congregation—involves bringing new people into the family. So, this next year we will be asking each person to commit to donating his or her time, talent, and treasure to invite the next generation of disciples to become part of St. Helena’s. This invitation consists of four parts:

3. LEARN
4. BELONG

An informational sheet can be found in the narthex along with green pledge cards (English). You can also read the informational sheet about the pledge campaign here. All members are asked to prayerfully consider the spiritual gifts and the financial and time commitments they can contribute to the life and ministry of our community. And, please know, that your contribution matters.

We are very pleased to announce that the diocesan Congregations Commission has awarded St. Helena's a $35,000 Vitality Grant for 2019 to support our parish's work to become a fully mission-focused, inclusive, and multicultural and parish. The parish owes a incredible debt of gratitude to Mr. Luís García Juarez, our liasion to the Congregations Commission, who has been a staunch advocate for us as we do the challenging work of congregational transformation and move toward financial self-sufficiency.

Please welcome David Herr to St. Helena's this Sunday, as he begins his work among us. David will be assisting Fr. Ethan for the next few months in getting the parish more organized, as well as singing in the choir at the 9 am Mass.

Over the past 5 years, David has become an expert in Chicago's North Side real estate market. David began his real estate career at a Chicago boutique rental agency and in just six months, he became the number one agent in the office. Prior to real estate, David studied musical theatre performance at Roosevelt University and devoted his life to music and the performing arts. Beyond real estate, David’s true passions will forever be music and performing and he is often found hopping around the city’s best standup comedy clubs and lounging with his Jack Russel/Beagle mix, Stumpy.

On Monday, November 12, from 5:30 to 8 pm, Bishop Anderson House will host at House Party at the Laguinitas Brewing Company to support the chaplaincy at the Illinois Medical District. Lagunitas Brewing Company is located at 2607 W. 17th Street in Chicago. The $15 entrance fee includes food.

Bishop Anderson House, an Episcopal Charity, provides the only funding to support the two chaplains that supply spiritual care at the hospitals in the Illinois Medical District. Deacon Daryce serves on the Board for Bishop Anderson House, and so we encourage you to attend and support her in this important ministry of the Episcopal Church.
Advent Is On Its Way! | ¡El Adviento Está en Camino!
Sunday, November 25 (the Sunday after Thanksgiving) will be the final Sunday of the Church year, known as "Christ the King" or "The Reign of Christ". The following Sunday, December 2, will be the First Sunday of Advent when the Church will begin to prepare for the Word made flesh, the Incarnation of God, in the person of the baby Jesus.

Christian Formation Program for Fall 2018 |

In keeping with our recent spirit of experimentation, St. Helena's will be offering a comprehensive Christian formation program for children and adults based in the magical world of Harry Potter. Professor James Thomas of Pepperdine University has observed that these books, which have been translated into 79 languages, "have made millions of kids smarter, more sensitive, certainly more literate, and more ethical and aware of hypocrisy and lust for power. They've made children better adults ..." Harry Potter's creator, J. K. Rowling, is a practicing Christian, a self-professed "seeker" and a member of the Scottish Episcopal Church, and has made Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry a place for both children and adults to explore what it means to be a good person in a contemporary world.

Each Hogwarts class will correspond to a serious topic in the fundamentals of the Christian faith and the Episcopal Church, including the Lord's Prayer and the Creeds, ecological theology, the sacraments, and the Book of Common Prayer. All classes will be offered between the English and Spanish Masses at 10:15 am in a bilingual format, and previous knowledge of the Harry Potter books and films is not necessary.
