A message from the President
Dear Members and Friends,
...and so, it is Kislev, just 23 days until Chanukah.   It's been a very strange and difficult beginning of our Jewish calendar, and a trying second half of the English Calendar.  Storms and hurricanes, shootings and political debate.  It is no wonder our membership is growing, and our attendance is stronger than ever.   It seems that as times become more stressful, we count more on our faith and turn to prayer.  Even with our misfortunes, Bnai Israel and our family members look forward to new beginnings with a renovated sanctuary in the works.  Most of our homes have been cleaned and repairs have been scheduled or completed.  We're almost all back to our normal day to day routines.  I am very grateful and proud for the hard work of so many volunteers who continued with their Tikkun Olum and cooked for Good Shepherd, and Hospice.  I am thankful for all the volunteers that stepped up to the task of cleanup and other affairs of our precious building.  And I am especially grateful for the financial support and outpour of contributions from our members and the outside Jewish Community for hurricane relief donations.  We live in a very special time where under the worst conditions we unite and work together.

The recent shooting in Pittsburgh has prompted a renewed sense of urgency to upgrade our security awareness.  Due to this heightened level of alert, we have requested additional patrols from the Wilmington Police Department and have hired our own security for times of religious services and school.  We are working on a plan to upgrade our door locks and install better lighting, cameras, and alarms.  But most of all, I ask that each of you maintain a higher level of awareness when attending services, Hebrew school, and meetings.  Be cognoscenti of who is in the building, be prepared and know where your closest exit from the building is. And if you carry a cell phone - your first reaction should be to dial 911.  These random acts of hatred can happen anywhere!
Finally, this Sunday at 4:30, is our semi-annual congregational meeting.  It will be an opportunity to vote and elect your officers and Board of Directors.  We will have reports from VP Harold Eichenholz on the state of our building, the roof, the remediation, and future upgrades.  We will have reports from our newly formed Design Committee on the status of our renovation.  We will have a brief financial update from Treasurer Jerry Smith.  Rabbi Kozlow will report on all things Jewish including upcoming programs and classes.  But mostly, it gives us all an opportunity to come together and share what we all want to continue to make Bnai Israel Congregation a truly special place to worship, learn and share our "Simchas" and "Nachas" together.

Shabbat Shalom and see you in Shul,

Barry

Hospice News

November 14  is our next date and we have enough volunteers for that date. However, Laurel Westreich is looking for volunteers to do what we have not done previously - prepare a dinner for Christmas Day. Her email is [email protected].

We offered to provide a traditional Christmas meal to Lower Cape Fear Hospice and they were delighted to accept.  Bnai Israel is the only  organization  scheduled to provide a meal (for 20)  on December 25th.   We need the following trays:  2 Turkey, 1 stuffing, 1 yams, 2 green vegetables or salad, 2 desserts, rolls for 20. Thank you to Elaine Lathrop  and Janice Kingoff  for starting the ball rolling.

Please deliver the food  in a disposable container and warm (if possible)  Drop off is at 1:00 pm.

If you are able to participate but can't heat or deliver your dish, please contact me so arrangements can be made: Laurel Westreich,  201-317-5071, or  [email protected] .   Thank you for your generosity.
