Appointed to Statewide Homelessness Task Force
In response to Governor Newsom's recently formed Statewide Homeless and Supportive Housing Advisory Task Force, California State Association of Counties (CSAC) organized a Homelessness Action Team in which I have been appointed. This Team will serve as a working group to complement the efforts of the Governor's Task Force. It is intended to fill any gaps at the county level and ensure a coordinated county voice on addressing homelessness and emphasizing the vital role that counties play in service delivery to those experiencing homelessness. Yolo County Landfill:
New Anaerobic Composter
Our Board meeting on October 22, 2019 adjourned to the Yolo County Landfill for the grand opening of the Anaerobic Composter. In a nutshell, an anaerobic composter is able to convert organic waste into renewable energy and compost. This process also reduces waste, emissions and space. The seven recently constructed anaerobic cells have an annual total capacity of 52,000 tons and the decomposition takes place in a sealed environment. Yolo County is leading the way in this cutting edge technology. To view photos of this event please click on the photo gallery below.
Yolo County Job Fair in West Sacramento - Huge Success!
Wednesday, October 16, 2019 marked the annual Yolo County Job Fair which was held in the Galleria of the West Sacramento Civic Center. More than 300 interested job seekers packed the Galleria and took advantage of the opportunity to gather information and chat with over 60 employers. Statistics gleaned from the job fair indicate that 46 interviews were scheduled/offered during the fair. Also offered was a free resume review. Homeless Housing Project
in West Sacramento
Through a partnership with Yolo County, Yolo County Housing, a private landlord, and the City of West Sacramento's homeless outreach services coordinator Mark Sawyer, we provided 12 newly refurbished apartment units for some of West Sacramento's most at risk homeless families. On November 1, 2019, a ribbon cutting ceremony and tour of the 12 apartment units on Merkley Avenue was held. To view photos of the ribbon cutting, please click on the photo gallery below.
Clarksburg Traffic Calming Installation
As a follow-up to our August Newsletter, the following traffic calming and safety accomplishments have occurred in Clarksburg:
  • Installation of 3-way stop sign on the Freeport Bridge and Netherlands Road and installation of solar radar speed signs; and
  • Installation of license plate reader cameras to identify stolen vehicles and illegal dumping activities on the Freeport Bridge and on CA-84/Jefferson Blvd.
Arthur F. Turner Community Library Celebrates 10 Year Anniversary
The West Sacramento Library held their 10 Year Anniversary Party on Thursday, November 7th. After an introduction by Yolo County Librarian Mark Fink, all guests were treated to a celebration including music, activities, presentations and birthday cake. Libraries are the fabric of our local community. If you haven't stepped a foot in, please make a note to do so soon. You won't be disappointed. The Arthur F. Turner Community Library is located at 1212 Merkley Avenue.
West Sacramento Day Reporting Center Volunteers at the 9/11 Memorial on Jefferson Blvd.
The West Sacramento Day Reporting Center is an adult re-entry program designed to assist men and women re-entering the community from prison and jail. On September 12, 2019, twelve students and two staff from the center volunteered to assist in the breakdown of the 9/11 Memorial on Jefferson Blvd. For the past 18 years, John Vinson has erected a memorial to honor those lost and injured in the attacks of September 11, 2001. This memorial has only grown over the years, and it truly takes the help of the local community to set up and break down such a massive production.
