Saying goodbye to Ann Hackett:
Join us in the Parish Hall after the 10 am service
by Ellen Schrader and Ann Hackett

One thing I will definitely miss about Ann is her photography skills, and her intention in documenting all the activities at Grace - from puddles and parking problems, to remodeling and construction, to the many events and ministries in action. What a gift she has provided us - a way to look back across the years at where we've been, who we were, and who we've become. However, Ann was usually behind the camera, and not in front of it, so with apologies to her.................here are a few pictures of Ann through the years. She offers her thoughts in the paragraphs below:

"How on earth did I get here, and who are all these people asking me questions?"
Vestry, circa 2006

I n 2008 a small sticky notepad with the above message was left in a desk drawe
r by my predecessor. It's there still unused. The question haunted m
e for weeks and I prayed to God for an inkling. I had no confidence in what I was invited to do when I stepped into the office. Eventually I was too busy to consider it any longer. And just-like-that a decade passed by.

I take my leave now having learned so much about the workings of Grace Church
Staff, circa 2015
- its past, its traditions, its worship, its programs and, especially, its people. Yes, too, I became very familiar with its mechanics. That was a challenge. But meeting and praying and serving with so many fellow parishioners is the aspect of my work that I loved the most. I'm grateful for the work and conversations I've shared with you over the years.

150th Co-Chairs Ann and James Deaton

At the top of my computer monitor, a small quote reminds me, "Don't just do something, sit there." This is a habit I've attempted to form without great success. Now in my next retirement, I can try a little harder. It will be a good thing to do. After a period of time, I will be back and "join" my church!
With gratitude for many blessings received, Ann Hackett

Holy Spirit, speak to my heart. Show me how to be faithful to your guidance, your mission, your love in fellowship and service to Grace Church.

  CALLING ALL BAKERS!
COOKIE WALK DEC. 15 - are you ready?
It is never too early to start baking for our annual Cookie Walk fundraiser, in support of our feeding ministries.  Proceeds from this year's event will go toward the purchase of a new commercial dishwasher for our kitchen (to replace the 40+ year old machine).  Avoid the holiday rush and get your baking done NOW.  You may store your labeled cookies in our freezer in a sturdy container.  Whatever your family's favorite holiday cookies are, they will sell like hotcakes at the cookie walk.  Expect a phone call or email from Nan or Ellen as they recruit bakers and helpers for the day of the event.  Any artistic ability?  We could use your help decorating the parish hall for the event - all decorations and a map are ready for you!  Help us make this year's event the best ever!  Contact Nan at (517) 242-3452 or Ellen in the office for more information and to volunteer.

Notes to Ann
Please take a minute to share a memory, a word of thanks, or well wishes to Ann on her retirement.  Cards are in the Commons for you to complete - just place in the basket and we'll collect them and present them to Ann in a memory book.

Thank you from LOVE, Inc.

Thank you to Grace Church for the use of the kitchen and parish hall space for the Love In the Name of Christ Healthy Cooking on a Budget class that just finished.  We are able to provide this class free of charge to participants thanks to the generous use of your space.  We appreciate the partnership with Grace Church as we work to share the gospel message of grace and forgiveness as the basis for making meaningful life changes for our neighbors in need.

Advent Quiet Morning
Sat., Dec. 1 - 11a to 12:15p

The Centering Prayer Community invites you to a time of silence, prayer and simple song to celebrate the season of Advent. Sometimes in the busyness and noise leading up to Christmas we overlook the quiet time of Advent. During this time of shortened days and darkness, it is good to reflect on the quiet that we need in our lives to renew our hearts and souls for welcoming Christ-God among us!

We who sit in silence, invite you to journey inward to renew the spirit of light that resides in your heart and soul. There will be periods of silence, prayers to celebrate the Advent season and an Advent Gospel reading with a short meditation.  Grace Harmony will lead Taize singing throughout the morning, adding to the peacefulness of this quiet service. Join us to celebrate the renewal of the light within and prepare anew for the joy of sharing the light of Christ with the world.

Safe Harbor Volunteer Training
after church on Dec. 2
If you are a Safe Harbor volunteer or even if you just want to learn more about this ministry, join Donna Olendorf in the sanctuary on Sunday, December 2, after the 10 a.m. service. She will explain volunteer jobs and show you how to sign up online. Even if you have volunteered before, you need to attend to find out about new procedures-including the addition of professional staffing for all the hours that the shelter is open. This means that Goodwill staff will be onsite all night and in the morning. If you are unable to attend but still want to volunteer, please contact Donna at dolendor@gmail.com (586.781.3260). There will also be training for Grace volunteers at the shelter at 3:30 p.m. on January 5, the day our shift begins.

Turn in your Oleson's receipts to benefit the Grace Food Pantry!

Oleson's Community Share Program

Here's how it works:
  1. You shop at Oleson's for groceries (liquor sales do not qualify for points)
  2. Turn in your receipts to the church.  Look for the envelope on the bulletin board in the Parish Hall, and place your receipts inside it.
  3. We submit receipts back to Oleson's
  4. We are granted cash rewards for the food pantry ($1 spent on groceries = 1 cent in Community Share points)

For every $5000 in receipts we submit, we receive $50 in cash for our food pantry.  Every little bit helps!

Thank you for participating!
