January is National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention month.
Slavery continues to exist through power and control over a person’s mental, physical, emotional and spiritual health.
Human trafficking can happen to anyone, at any time. Within our tribal communities, native women, transwomen, and girls are victimized by human trafficking at rates higher than that of the general population due to factors that include (but are not limited to) poverty or lack of access to work or services on or near reservations. Border towns, are the original man camps that trafficking happens in. Trafficking is often an invisible crime that keeps victims from coming forward to seek help because of language barriers, fear of the traffickers (family members/ stranger/boyfriends), shame and/or fear of law enforcement.
In 2018, the Indian Urban Health Institute released a report of Albuquerque, NM having the second highest number of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Gallup, NM has one of the sixth bordertown of MMIW. For centuries, and to this day, we continue to see native people going missing or murdered through the development of extractive industries in our tribal communities. We see this happening more than ever in New Mexico to North Dakota, and internationally.
As the crisis and urge continues, we must also recognize how our black and brown sisters in the United States are also missing at a very high rate.
Additionally, January is National Stalking Awareness Month. Stalking often predicts and/or co-occurs with sexual and domestic violence. We recognize the long history of colonial violence and systematic oppression that lays the foundation for the disproportionate rates of violence against Native Women and children. No matter where you are, or where you come from, everyone has the inherent right to be and feel safe in their own home, community, and on their territory.

Together, we braided a collective of thoughts, intentions and history as we celebrated our people and communities. We appreciate each and every one of you for joining us in the space we created, together, for us to give updates, network, eat, and play games.

CSVANW was set up at the 2019 Winter Indian Market in Santa Fe, NM, collecting book donations for our annual Little One Holiday Book Drive. Thank you to the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts (SWAIA) for partnering with us and giving us space.

Over 200 Books Donated for CSVANW's Annual Little One Holiday Book Drive
Supporting relatives gave the gift of reading this past holiday season during our Little One Holiday Book Drive. We collected over 200 books for our Native youth and their family who spent their holidays in domestic violence shelters. Thank you to all our relatives who supported and donated. Books were shipped to the following shelters:
- Battered Families Shelter in Gallup, NM;
- Roberta’s Place in Grants, NM;
- Women of Eagle’s Next Shelter in St. Paul, MN;
- Pueblo of Laguna Shelter in Laguna, NM;
- New Beginning Shelter in Zuni, NM;
- TREE House in Shiprock, NM; and
- Strong Hearted Women’s Shelter in Valley Center, CA.

Coalition to Stop Violence Against Native Women
(CSVANW) seeks a visionary Executive Director to lead the organization in building and strengthening social, political, and economic environments in which violence against Native American women no longer exists. This is an exciting opportunity to systemically address root causes of violence (i.e. racism, sexism, classism, and other oppressions) against vulnerable Native people and work with an incredible team and membership to strengthen the movement and mobilize communities towards healthier families and healthier communities.

CSVANW is sponsoring a two-day Healthy Relationships Project Training of Trainers training which will teach attendees comprehensive child sexual abuse prevention skills and knowledge. In addition, attendees will learn how to implement all aspects of Care for Kids© and SAFE-T (Sexual Abuse Free Environment for Teens™) with adults in schools through faculty and staff trainings, parents’ and caregivers’ meetings/events, and students through in-classroom instruction.
These curricula are developmentally targeted, research-based, and focus not only on victim prevention, but also perpetration prevention. Children learn thesocial-emotional skills needed to recognize, manage and maintain healthy relationships throughout their lives.

The Grants to Tribal Governments to Exercise Special Domestic Violence Criminal Jurisdiction program encourages collaborations among tribal leadership, courts, prosecutors, attorneys, defense counsel, law enforcement, probation, victim service providers, and other partners to ensure that victims find safety and justice and that non-Indians who commit crimes of domestic violence, dating violence, and violations of protection orders in the Indian country of the participating tribe are held accountable.
