PRESENTATION

The Rev. Dr. Megan Rohrer
SFPD Community Chaplain Coordinator

Sergeant Art Howard
SFPD Community Chaplaincy Program Coordinator

Presentation: San Francisco Police Department's new Community Chaplaincy to support San Franciscans. Over the past year over 150 volunteers have been trained to help non-violent protests remain non-violent. At the request of first responders, SFPD Community Chaplaincy is providing free trainings to enable volunteers (lay, ordained and all expressions in between) to support victims of crimes and provide a ministry of presence after mass casualty incidents and disasters. The goal is to have community chaplain teams on call 24/7 and are interested in feedback on how to support faithful groups working on community policing activities and will work to create Community Response Teams (LGBTQ/Castro, African American/Bayview, Chinatown, Homeless Support, Non-violence team, and other teams requested by the community or first responders) that can provide support to groups with historical tension with the SFPD. The presentation will provide opportunities for people to learn more, provide feedback, learn how to get involved and provide an opportunity for the Interfaith Community to provide their preferred contact information for referrals.

Presenters:  The Rev. Dr. Megan Rohrer, a distinguished alum with an M.Div. and
D. Min. from the Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, is the Community Chaplain Coordinator for the San Francisco Police Department and the pastor of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in the Sunset. Pastor Megan received an honorable mention as an Unsung Hero of Compassion from Wisdom in Action with His Holiness the Dalai Lama, made honorary royalty by an ancestral Hindu king in Bali, Indonesia, received an honorary doctorate from Palo Alto University and was a finalist for the Lambda Literary award for transgender non-fiction. Last year, Pastor Megan was featured both in Cosmopolitan and in the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation Exhibit in Wittenberg, Germany.

Sergeant Art Howard works in the San Francisco Police Department Behavioral Science Unit to help first responders and their loved ones get immediate support they deserve. Sgt. Howard specializes in chemical dependency treatment and he is a certified Alcohol & Drug counselor for the department and their families. He also coordinates the SFPD Police and Community Chaplaincy Programs.
