During this time of distancing and sheltering at home, we encourage you to not sit all day! Get up and get active!
If you are watching TV, stand up during every commercial. Take this "commercial break” to take a lap around your home or engage in an active chore. Some ideas are: throw some clothes in the wash; take care of the dishes; make the bed; and/or take out the garbage.
Just imagine how doing the above “physical activities” will give you a productive feeling after just one show!
Physical Activity
is defined as the movement of your skeletal muscles that requires energy and produces a health benefit. Not all physical activity is exercise.
Exercise
is a planned, structured, deliberate physical activity intended to improve or maintain physical fitness. All exercise is physical activity.
The benefits of physical activity and exercise are numerous:
- Releases “feel good” hormones and acts like nature’s own antidepressant
- Keeps and improves your strength so you can stay independent
- Gives you more energy to do the things you want to do
- Improves balance and ability to sleep
- Prevents or delays diseases like heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis or high blood pressure
