Long Beach, CA
Half Native American and full TERROR in this politically correct authoritarian time. Leyba is a 'Sexpressionist' painter, performance artist, author and the most original and unconventional book maker. Internationally known for being masterful yet controversial, Leyba is extreme, and makes no apologies for it.
"We need Leyba! He of the unwavering penetrating eye of truth. The man is truly heroic in his fearless exposure of corporate mind control and his absolute refusal to be hoodwinked into the all pervasive societal sugar coma trance state induced by the wielders of the great consumer spell. His writing (like his
PAINting) is incisive, cutting through all the BS with laser beam intensity and shining a fierce and blazing light into the dark covert corners to expose all that the corrupt hypocrites endeavor to keep from being seen. Coyote rising! HOWL!"

HOVVRAD: I've lost love, 2019, Acrylic and gouache on mixed media paper, 18" x 15" |
Los Angeles, CA
Jared Cabrera is a young artist from California. He works under the name Hovvrad - pronounced How Rad. He's the current artist-in-residence at the Tom of Finland Foundation in Los Angeles... Building on his previous work in film, video, and painting, Hovvrad's work in
There Is No Such Place presents a narrative that explores a boy's view on love and peace.
"Using a soft colour palate allows me to paint these burly men as soft shapes..." says Hovvrad, explaining how his intention is to tackle hyper-masculine stereotypes in the gay community. "I find by stripping down these men, to their underwear, jockstraps, and nude allows me to paint a behind-closed-door, reflective image to convey complete vulnerability and body empowerment, without too many defining lines."

"TOM house is inherently inspiring. There is a magical sense of mischief around every corner. it is a very special place indeed... I like to work with a wide variety of models who are different shapes, sizes, colours and ages, as male beauty and sexuality in all its forms is something I believe should be celebrated. For me the sexiness of my subjects lies in their confidence." - Ben Youdan

TOM OF FINLAND (Touko Laaksonen, Finnish, 1920 - 1991), Untitled (Detail from On the Bus), 1978, Pen and ink on paper |
Los Angeles, CA
Artists Seth Bogart and Jess Scott have collected a genre-spanning group of artists selected for their individual unlocking of eternal desires in
Heaven and Hell. The exhibition will be on display throughout TOM House, where the gathered works will revel in Tom of Finland's erotically charged spectrum of good and bad, positive and negative, the unearthly and the all-too carnal.
Scott and Bogart were inspired by a comic panel by Tom depicting two men boarding a metro train bound for "Hell - Heaven". The destination was a twinning of oppo - pleasure and pain, camaraderie and isolation, truth and disguise, and a total disassembling of the binary itself.

Tom was born Touko Valio Laaksonen
in Kaarina, near Turku, on the southwest coast of Finland in 1920.
Tom talks about his youth:
"We lived in a school house, the way it worked back then was that teachers had an apartment in the school house. Mom was the head teacher and when another teacher was needed for the school because the population in the area was growing, they hired a man. And he fell in love with the head teacher and they married. To the end my mom was the boss at school and dad was the other teacher."

Tom of Finland lived here
Tom's life in Los Angeles in the 1980s was a time of freedom, celebration and inspiration. There he met a man who became the protector of his beloved and all his life's work. There he was no longer the director of advertising agency, Touko Laaksonen, he was Tom of Finland.
