EPIC News
A Message to EPICureans!

EPIC celebrated its busy 2017-18 year with a well- attended and enjoyable annual Provost’s Reception – but EPIC activities have not concluded for the season. On June 12 we have a particularly exciting program: a guided tour, led by Engineering Prof. Sunil Agrawal of his rehabilitation robotics laboratory. Agrawal’s cutting edge work, carried out in collaboration with Rehabilitation Medicine at CUMC, is particularly relevant to people in our age demographic because it focuses on robotics aimed at helping people relearn, restore, or improve functional movements. Over lunch we will be given an orientation lecture and then tour the labs with his team. EPIC is hoping to build a collaborative relationship with the robotics lab so that eligible EPIC members can participate in development and testing.  Do join us and please RSVP below for planning purposes.

Here is some good news! At the Annual Reception Provost John Coatsworth announced the creation of a full-time administrator position for EPIC and the Office for Faculty Retirement (headed by Prof Emeritus Doug Chalmers). The Provost also announced that there are several possible permanent locations for EPIC to “own” and use for its activities. This is welcome news for our continued meaningful growth. We’ll keep you posted on the new position and the space.

On June 6 th this year’s Morningside Gardens lecture series concludes with a 2:00 PM presentation by Prof Emerita Mischa Schwartz. The series, curated by Prof Emerita Jo Shepherd, in collaboration with George Calderaro, Director of Community Relations, School for Professional Studies, has been very well-attended and much appreciated. Thank you both!

Yoga continues June through August and we are hoping to have another musical get together, coordinated by Prof. Emerita Carolyn Greenberg.

Have a good day.

" Improving Gait and Balance during Walking with Robotics"
Professor Sunil K. Agrawal has developed a highly visible interdisciplinary program in rehabilitation robotics at Columbia University. Through a range of innovative designs of robots and clinical studies, Dr. Agrawal has showed that novel training robots can help humans to relearn, restore, or improve functional movements.

Professor Agrawal will offer a presentation of his research followed by a tour of the The Robotics And Rehabilitation (RoAR) Lab. We will meet in the Seeley W. Mudd building at 12:00 p.m.(exact room to be announced).
12:00 - 2:00 pm.

EPIC Summer Yoga
EPIC Yoga continues Thursday mornings in June and July at Faculty House.

Each one-hour class is offered for mixed levels, but designed for beginners to intermediate yogis.
The 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. class practices breathing techniques and moves through some basic yoga poses, concentrating on alignment, balance, and flexibility. Those with experience move more deeply into the poses. From 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. we practice gentle/chair yoga, which is ideal for those of more limited mobility or flexibility. Classes include breathing, stretching, and yoga poses, done either seated in a chair or standing. No yoga mats are required for this class.

Yoga for EPIC members is led by Virginia Papaioannou, Professor of Genetics and Development, and a registered teacher with the Yoga Alliance Registry.

EPIC Yoga will meet:

Thursday, June 7
Thursday, June 14
Thursday, June 21

Thursday, July 5
Thursday, July 12
Thursday, July 19

Details are available on our Calendar of Events .

EPIC Yoga takes place at Faculty House on the Morningside campus. Room assignments in Faculty House vary. Please check stanchions in the lobby for room location each week.
