Support Homeless Veterans by Donating Hygiene Items

The City of Moreno Valley is collecting hygiene items to help support local homeless, formerly homeless and at-risk veterans in the U.S. Vets program.

Donations of new hygiene items can be dropped off at the City's Veterans Day Ceremony on Sunday, November 11 at the Moreno Valley Civic Center, 14177 Frederick Street.

The ceremony starts at 10 a.m.

The following items are needed:

· Shampoo

· Conditioner

· Body Soap

· Deodorant

· Disposable Razors

· Toilet Paper

· Toothbrushes

· Toothpaste

Donations can also be dropped off at City Hall, 14177 Frederick Street, at the Conference and Recreation Center, 14075 Frederick Street, or at the Moreno Valley Public Library, 25480 Alessandro Boulevard, through November 19.

Celebrate America Recycles Day with Free Family Fun

The City of Moreno Valley and the County of Riverside are celebrating America Recycles Day with a free day of family fun on Saturday, November 10.

Everyone is invited to RivCo Recycles Day in the Resource Garden at the Riverside County Department of Waste Resources. Activities will be held at 14310 Frederick Street in Moreno Valley on Saturday, November 10 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Learn all the ways you can reduce, reuse and recycle with demonstrations, games, prizes and activities that will be fun and informative for the whole family.

The Resource Garden and surrounding area will be filled with exhibitors demonstrating quick “how to” sessions on Composting, Green Cleaning, Vermicomposting, Recycling and Food Waste.

The Kids Activity Zone will include crafts, gardening and games made from reused materials. Children can also tour the Recycle House, a make-believe house that teaches real recycling habits, and put on a hard hat and safety vest and climb into the driver’s seat of some of the department’s trucks.

The Resource Garden includes a Demonstration Garden, Worm Shed, Herb Garden, Compost Demonstration Area plus art and hardscape made from recycled materials.

Free drawings for prizes will be held every 30 minutes. Refreshments can be purchased from food trucks.

The Riverside County Department of Waste Resources operates the county landfills and offers this event to show how easy it can be to recycle and reduce waste going to landfills.

Police, Firefighters Support Afterschool Programs

Student’s in the City’s afterschool program at Ridge Crest Elementary School recently celebrated Lights on Afterschool, a nationwide event celebrating afterschool programs and their important role in the lives of children, families and communities.

Launched in 2000 , Lights On Afterschool to draws attention to the many ways afterschool programs support students by offering them opportunities to learn new things—such as science, community service, robotics, Tae Kwon Do and poetry—and discover new skills. The events send a powerful message that millions more kids need quality afterschool programs.

This year, Ridge Crest Elementary celebrated Lights on Afterschool with a few of our local heroes.

Moreno Valley Fire Captain Lomeli and his crew at Station 91 let students explore the fire engine, learn about the job of a firefighter, and ask questions.

Moreno Valley Police Officer Moreno and her team gave our students the opportunity to participate in hands-on activities to learn about their footprints and fingerprints.

The students at Ridge Crest Elementary were thankful to the dedicated firefighters and police officers who provided opportunities to learn more about how they keep our City safe every day.

Pedestrian, Vehicle Safety Enhanced on Alessandro Boulevard

The Alessandro Boulevard Street Improvement Project at Chagall Court and Graham Street has been completed, making the roads safer for pedestrians and reducing the possibility of collisions.

To increase the safety of the area, a potential collision area at Chagall Court was removed and the intersection at Alessandro and Graham Street was reconfigured.

A landscaped median was added along with new traffic signal poles, and pedestrian access ramps. A synchronized detection system was also added to ensure smooth traffic flow.

These safety enhancements were funded by federal funding through the Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP).
