Neighbors Get Their #PARTYON at Neighbor's Night Out!

Neighbor's Night Out was an outstanding success! With over 100 participating neighborhoods, appearances by OCPD officers, Waste Management, Mayor David Holt, and members of OKC Council -- 2019 NNO was indeed the best we have had! Neighborhoods participated through a menagerie of organized block parties, clubhouses, public buildings, beautiful parks, and even local neighborhood venues. There were moon bounces, face painting, socializing, sharing, organizing efforts, membership drives, bands, musicians, and tasty noshes occurring all over our amazing city, which is fantastic, because we all know that social neighborhoods are safer and healthier neighborhoods.

The featured collage does not do the event justice, but it is our way of expressing our gratitude and appreciation to all participating neighborhoods and sponsors. We know you put your hearts and souls into your neighborhoods -- and it shows!!! Thank you for opening up your hearts and neighborhoods to us and for always being the good!

Special thanks to our sponsors:
  • OCPD
  • Oklahoma City Waste Management
  • OG&E
  • Target
  • Barnes & Noble

Save the Date! Good Neighbor's Award Banquet Coming Nov. 23, 2019!

The Good Neighbor Awards are our way of showing appreciation for those citizens among us doing the often thankless work of keeping our neighborhoods safe, beautiful, and healthy.
A Letter from NACOK Executive Director Georgie Rasco Regarding MAPS 4

Neighborhood Leaders,

Maps 4 is coming to you for a vote on Dec. 10, 2019 . As citizens of this City, we have never before had an opportunity to vote on almost $1 Billion worth of projects of which  78% of those funds are going DIRECTLY into enhancing the Neighborhoods  in which we live, the parks in which we play, and the community services we and our neighbors desperately need.

Do we love all of the projects in the package? Probably not . But should we give up $768 Million dollars that will go directly into the quality of life for you, me and our neighbors simply because we don't like a small portion of the plan? You decide. We have never, and may never again have a Maps project that is as close to a Maps for Neighborhoods as Maps 4 is.

Highlights of the $768 Million Neighborhood Enhancement Projects are:

  • $63 million to upgrade EVERY single neighborhood park (but NONE in Downtown or at the River), 3 brand new parks in underserved parts of town
  • $29 Million for new Soccer fields and facilities (both North and South)
  • $70 Million for 4 new youth centers
  • $15 Million for a 5th Senior Wellness Center and an add'l $15 million to help low-income Seniors to access the Center
  • $40 Million to construct 2 brand new mental health crisis centers, and a brand new detox "restoration" center for addictions, and money for housing persons with mental illness and homelessness. Every family is affected by this in some way
  • $38 Million to construct a new Family Justice Center, known as Palomar, to serve our neighbors who may be victims of domestic and sexual violence, human trafficking and elder abuse. This is a cooperative program through a non-profit and the OCPD
  • $87 Million on dramatically improving our public transportation system in ways you can't even imagine! No streetcars are included in this funding and our neighborhoods will be connected through a multitude of new buses, new bus stops, and new programs
  • $87 Million to fund sidewalks, placemaking, landscaping, public-art, public trees, trails, bike lanes, and up to 1,000 new street lights. This is the dream of EVERY neighborhood!
  • $50 Million to transform our city's approach to reducing homelessness through a "housing first" model and a must for our most vulnerable neighbors
  • $38 Million on constructing a brand new, state-of-the-art animal shelter for our 4-legged neighbors
  • $17 Million (with an offer from a private donor to donate $20 Million more) for the Diversion Hub, an innovative new program for OKC to assist low-level offenders in establishing a more productive life and lessening the pressure on the County jail. C'mon neighbors, you know we need this!
  • $71 Million for the purpose of transforming the Innovation District on the NE side to create jobs, and foster a more diverse economy. These funds will help create an entrepreneurial center which will then be used to create small businesses in the area, attract larger business, and to connect neighborhoods on the NE side for more continuity
  • $16 Million for a Freedom Center to finally and rightfully acknowledge the history of the Civil Rights movement in OKC and to preserve it for all generations. It will be named for the civil rights pioneer, Clara Luper, a good neighbor to us all
  • $25 Million for beautification projects at numerous places around OKC but primarily at the major entryways to the City. As Neighborhoods, we know the importance of a good showing at your entry points and OKC will finally be able to do this

Additional $215 Million projects include.....

  • $37 Million for a multi-purpose stadium. We will finally be able to hold statewide 6-A championship football games in OKC. As well as HS Soccer and other sports that we have not been able to host before. Yes, it is true, this will probably be the home of the professional soccer team, but the multitude of uses that the City of OKC will be able to use it for cannot be forgotten
  • $115 Million to the Chesapeake Arena and the Thunder practice facility.  The Thunder brings a lot of revenue into our City.
  • $63 Million to the Fairgrounds Coliseum for the purpose of sustaining and growing the transformational economic impact of the events that are already held there

  • Study the issues.
  • Ask your questions.
  • Look for the events we will be hosting between now and the election to help you with more information.

Enroll in EMSAcare in September to Cover Your Household for Emergency Ambulance Service

September is  EMSAcare  month in Oklahoma City, when residents may change their membership with the ambulance service from Sept. 1-30.

EMSAcare covers the out-of-pocket expenses for emergency ambulance transports anywhere in the EMSA service area, which is most of the Oklahoma City and Tulsa metro areas. It applies to all permanent members of the household, regardless of their age or relationship to each other and even if they don’t have medical insurance.

Oklahoma City residents who are not member of EMSAcare can enroll by calling (405) 297-2833. You can also change it from within your online Utilities account, which you can access or sign up for at  myutilities.okc.gov . Enrollment results in a $3.65 monthly charge included on your OKC utility bill. Members who want a membership card can print one at  emsaonline.com/emsacare.html .

Visit  okc.gov/emsacare  for more information.

A Good Neighbor Approach to Grocery Shopping

Although we are not advertising for this store, we couldn't pass up the opportunity to tell everyone about the "good neighbor" approach that the grocery store is taking!  Check this out!

A new grocery store just opened in Oklahoma City called the “Public Wholesale and Food Market.” They distribute expired food through a needs rewards system. For every dollar spent, a matching dollar amount in rewards is given. You can keep those rewards for future purchases, or give them away to someone in need. The purpose of this store is to limit food waste and feed those who are hungry. It is the first store of its kind since the passage of a new state law called the Josephine Meade Anti-Hunger Act.

Address :  3020 NW 16th St, Oklahoma City, OK 73107
Hours :  Monday - Sunday from 7 AM - 10 PM

From an Oklahoma City resident:

"Here’s the way it works - you do your shopping (prices are good and they have interesting choices) and when you check out the cashier will initial your receipt. With that receipt you can go to Aisle One and buy green labeled groceries for the same dollar amount you just spent, for free! So if you spent $60, you have $60 credit for Aisle One items.

The items in that Aisle are 1-3 days past their sell-by date. Oklahoma passed a law saying items like that can be sold at discounted prices as long as they are labeled, but at Public Warehouse you can get them for nothing! Sell-by dates are often arbitrarily assigned and things like frozen foods, cheese, vacuum packed meats, etc, etc are fine even long after that posted date - how long do you keep hotdogs or chicken in your freezer without ever thinking about the sell-by date?

What’s cool about this place is that you don’t have to redeem your receipt right away, in fact you don’t have to use it yourself at all, you can give it to someone else to use. I gave mine to a homeless guy who had a wife and a son, all he has to do is go in, show an employee the receipt and they’ll take him to the right aisle and he can get $50 worth of free food."

Oklahoma City Street Renamed to Honor Kings of Leon

POSTED 10:13 AM, SEPTEMBER 17, 2019, BY  KFOR-TV AND K. QUERRY

One month after the city council voted to honor a band with Oklahoma ties, Kings of Leon will have their own Oklahoma City street.

On Aug. 27,  members of the Oklahoma City Council voted to honor the Kings of Leon by naming a street in Bricktown after them.

Officials say part of California, between Joe Carter Ave. and Charlie Christian Ave., in Bricktown will soon be known as the ‘Kings of Leon Lane.’

“We are thrilled to recognize Kings of Leon for their Oklahoma City roots and their support of our city through the years,” said Mayor David Holt. “Kings of Leon now joins a constellation of OKC musical stars celebrated in Bricktown, including Charlie Christian, Wanda Jackson, Vince Gill and The Flaming Lips. These namings are our opportunity to remind the world the artistic brilliance that originates in OKC, and remind our young people that they can be anything they want to be.”

The street dedication will take place at 2 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 27 at the corner of California and Joe Carter avenues.

Kings of Leon is headlining a free concert later Friday to celebrate the grand opening of MAPS 3’s Scissortail Park.
