The Board of Trustees is seeking YOUR input for the 2021 Fine Award, to be given to outstanding volunteer(s) at the Annual Meeting on June 13, 2021. This award recognizes the consistent, outstanding, and otherwise unacknowledged volunteer contribution made to the pastoral, administrative, congregational and/or financial life and health of this community. Awards for the last two years were given to Kathy Roberts ('19) and Kristen Leddy ('20). All past recipients can be found HERE.

It's here! UUA's General Assembly will be virtual this year, full of rich opportunities for connection and learning. The themes this year: Justice, Healing, Courage.

LANGUAGE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE |
|
The Safer Congregation's presentation on Addiction and Mental Health on Friday April 9 shared lots of useful information. One of the biggest takeaways: the opposite of addiction is connection. Clearly, this has big implications for us as a faith community!
Another point to share: the language we use carries its own power. Please refer to this poster about "person first" language and its value.
And watch these short videos with your loved ones. Quick and powerful, they can change one's life.

WHAT IS THE 8th PRINCIPLE? |
|
On April 11th we had our first chance to discuss a congregational Anti-racism Resolution proposed by the Racial Justice Council, which includes adoption of an 8th Principle. Understandably there were a variety of questions and there will be more opportunities for discussion.
The 8th Principle states: “We, the member congregations of the Unitarian Universalist Association, covenant to affirm and promote: journeying toward spiritual wholeness by working to build a diverse multicultural Beloved Community by our actions that accountably dismantle racism and other oppressions in ourselves and our institutions.” To date 33 congregations have adopted this Principle. It is expected that the Principle will be voted on at General Assembly in 2022 and again in 2023 to make any change final.

TUTORS NEEDED FOR THE HOMEWORK CLUB AT CIRI |
|
The Refugee Services Program at CIRI (The Connecticut Institute for Refugees and Immigrants) is seeking volunteers to tutor students 8-16 years of age. The Homework Club will be held on Tuesday afternoons from 3:45 PM-5:00 PM in May and June and will be conducted remotely using ZOOM. It is anticipated that the greatest need will be for tutors who are able to help with reading and writing English and with Math. If you are interested in volunteering or would like further information, please contact Kathy Roberts of the Immigration and Refugee Outreach Committee.

The FEED (Food Equity and Economic Development) program of the Council of Churches of Greater Bridgeport is looking for volunteers to load food at 229 Mountain Grove Street, Bridgeport, and drop off at 30 Bostwick Avenue, Bridgeport.
