CELEBRATE EARTH DAY IN WORSHIP!

The world – each fragment as well as the whole – is a window in the love of God. Every moment we are given provides an opportunity to appreciate the gift of the world that God so loves. As God’s children, we are entrusted with the responsibility to protect God’s creation. We must realize that climate change intensifies every system of injustice, discrimination, and disadvantage – and that the actions of each of us as individuals impacts all of us worldwide.

Praising the beauty of God's creation is an essential part of our ongoing faith journey and worship experience. Each year we dedicate at least one day to lift up creation stewardship as a focus. Earth Day is celebrated worldwide to raise awareness of environmental issues and inspire appreciation for the environment. The idea for Earth Day came after the massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, CA in 1969. The first Earth day eventually led to the creation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the passage of the Clean Air Act, the passage of the Clean Water Act, and the passage of the Endangered Species Act. Since the first Earth Day in 1970, incredible environmental goals have been achieved, thanks largely to efforts by people of faith. The global faith community is a critical voice in overcoming obstacles and integrating environmental issues into political, social and economic agendas.

The theme for Earth Day 2021 is Restore Our Earth, which focuses on natural processes and emerging green technologies that can restore harmony with the world’s ecosystems. Join Earth Day 2021 and help us Restore Our Earth, not just because we care about the natural world, but because we are a part of it as well.

This year the Cathedral of St. James will celebrate Earth day with an outside Eucharist
beginning at 6:30p.m on Thursday April 22, on the East side of the Cathedral, please
bring your own lawn chairs or blankets, and remember to always wear masks and stay socially distanced from one another. The service will also be live streamed via our YouTube and Facebook social media networks.

SUNDAY SCHOOL MISSION PROJECT
FOR HEIFER PROJECT INTERNATIONAL
As the Easter season unfolds, may we be present to the ways in which the Spirit provides us with opportunities to meet the Risen Christ whenever we make a choice to support life giving projects for the benefit of others through our giving and our service.

Our Sunday School Children have given us a wonderful opportunity to be Christ’s life-giving presence with their Heifer Project International Mission project. Begun with the first Sunday in Lent as a way to learn through experience the practice of the spiritual discipline of Alms Giving, the children are extending their project through the Easter Season and have invited us all to join with them.

We can not only provide for those in desperate need during this pandemic here in the United States and overseas by donating below to HPI; we can also role model for our young disciples our example of what it means, first, to give generously and second, demonstrate something very, very important in today’s world: our power as Christ followers to effect change! To make the world a better place! The place God desires for it to be.

Our children live in a world full of disturbing uncertainty and unpredictability; a world of overwhelm and a sense of powerlessness. They need a sense of their ability to shape the future for goodness; to affect their destiny and the destiny of others; to have a sense of competency in their ability to make a concrete difference. They need this experience of the power of the Risen Christ at work in the world.

Let’s show them the way. This project wraps up Sunday May 16.
If you would like to donate to this ministry, please mail or drop off a check to St. James Cathedral with a memo note: "For Heifer Project International" so that we can distribute donations appropriately. If you donate on our website linked below, please indicate in the description "For HPI". Thank you!

For many who have worked from home during the pandemic, wearing the same clothes for more than a day has become a normal occurrence. But one Episcopal priest is doing it to the extreme, on purpose.
President Joe Biden visited a Virginia seminary chapel that is being used as a COVID-19 vaccination clinic as his administration moved up the date when he hopes all Americans will be eligible to get a vaccine.
St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, founded in 1692, is the oldest church in Baltimore, Maryland. It owns an offering plate that is itself more valuable than any offering the congregation might collect on a typical Sunday. Made of silver and encrusted with gems, the offering plate bears an inscription dating it to “Easter 1876.”
The two teenage sons of an Anglican archdeacon in Lebanon have arrived safely in the United States to study at a boarding school, thanks to an effort by the Diocese of Maine.
