Student Opinions on Recreational Spaces in Menlo Park
Tuesday, November 13, lunchtime, PAC. All students are welcome to meet with the city's Parks and Recreation department to talk about what kind of recreational spaces, parks, and fields you think the city should build. Contact Mr. Chui here for more information.

Hillview Site Council Meeting
Tuesday, November 13, 3:30 - 5:00 p.m., Hillview Office. Hillview Site Council, which is comprised of Hillview parents, teachers, staff and students, meets monthly to develop and evaluate progress on school-wide goals. The agenda is available here. All parents in our community are welcome!

Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Survey
Friday, November 16, all MPCSD grades 6 - 8 students are invited to complete a Social Emotional Learning (SEL) survey. The results from these surveys help us understand how our schools and programs are supporting student wellness in the aggregate so we can adapt and improve our programs. If you would like more information or would like to opt your student out of the survey, complete the form attached here and return it to the Hillview office. Preview the survey here.

Lost and Found
Friday, November 16, everything will be donated. If you think or know your student has lost something, now is the time to come by and take a look in the container located outside of the student center.

Walk to School Day 2018 Survey
Survey deadline is November 19.  Thank you for your wonderful participation in Walk to School Day 2018. Due your commitment to safe walking and biking for students, a record-breaking 5,613 communities participated in walking activities. We want to hear from you! How did you participate? What worked well? What would you like to try differently in the future? Take a few minutes to complete our Walk to School Day 2018 Survey here. Your feedback will help make future Walk and Bike to School Days even better. 

Parent Volunteers for Science Project
Wednesday, November 28 and Thursday, November 29, 8:30 a.m - 12:00 p.m. 6th-grade science is looking for parent volunteers to come in to class during our Follow the Heat project. Your job is to provide feedback to students on their insulator inventions. Engineering background is helpful, but not required! We would like volunteers, we are open to the entire community of Hillview parents, 8:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., or any part thereof, on Wednesday or Thursday or both. MPCSD School Board Members Retire - Joan Lambert and Terry Thygesen
Tuesday, November 13, 6:00 p.m., TERC 181 Encinal Avenue. All parents are invited to say thank you and farewell as two MPCSD long-serving School Board members retire. Join us at the School Board meeting where Joan and Terry will be formally recognized and celebrated, with cake for all. Joan and Terry, who between them also raised seven children in our schools, have been instrumental in so many milestones for our district  including the Spanish Immersion program, maintaining stron g funding for our excellent teachers and programs , the building of new campuses as  we have grown, and the opening our our newest venture, the Early Learning Center. MPCSD Community Meetings
Safe Routes to School 
A city-wide Safe Routes to School program that aims to make walking and biking fun and easier for families. Walk and bike to school to improve health and well-being while also being safe. Join one of the upcoming meetings that are drop-in style with a brief presentation at 7:00 p.m. Materials will be provided in both English and Spanish. A Spanish interpreter is available on Wednesday. There will be light refreshments and activities for children.

  • Find out more about the city-wide program
  • Brainstorm projects and activities that you would like to see at your schools
  • Help make walking and riding a bike to school feel safe and comfortable for Menlo Park residents

In this comedy thriller, a group of travelers gets stranded overnight at a rural railway station in 1920s England. The locals are superstitious about a phantom train that travels in the dead of night with ghosts from a long-ago train accident. The travelers uncover the truth, but not before one obnoxious passenger drives them mad with his antics and tom foolery.

Tickets available to purchase online here, or at the door an hour before curtain, or at lunchtime at Hillview on November 13-15.  Adults $15 and children $12

We had a great response to basketball registration. Registration is now closed. Thank you to all the parent volunteers who signed up to coach this season. You are the reason this season will be a success! Go Hawks!

Mandatory Player Evaluation and Team Selection
Sunday, November 11, Hillview Gym
6th-grade girls, 8:30 - 9:50 a.m.
7th-grade girls, 10:00 - 11:20 a.m.
8th-grade girls, 11:30 a.m. - 12:50 p.m.

Teams will be determined on the day of the workouts.

Practice starts the week of November 12. The coach will contact players' parents after the evaluation and team selection is completed. 

Games b egin before Thanksgiving. Season ends mid to late March. Normally one game per week tentatively as follows:
6th-Grade Girls - Mondays
6th-Grade Boys - Wednesdays
7th-Grade Girls - Mondays (most likely combined with 8th grade due to league availability, also possible - Fridays)
7th-Grade Boys - Tuesdays
8th Grade (MPMSL) - Mondays with a couple exceptions

MPAEF Funds in Action: Jeanie Ritchie Innovation Grants
The Jean Ritchie Innovation Grants (JRG) Program here is a signature MPAEF initiative whose mission is to enable teachers to pursue innovative teaching programs in their classroom, grade or school. The funding for these projects is supported through the annual grant given to Menlo Park City School District by MPAEF - this year $26,694 of the $3.7M grant was earmarked for the JRG program.

We are excited to announce the 2018-2019 School Year Jeanie Ritchie Innovation Grant awardees here.  Keep an eye out for these 19 MPAEF funded projects coming to your child's school - and take a moment to thank these teachers for taking extra effort to bring innovation and creativity into their classroom.

Winter Water Polo for Middle School Girls Mayfield 650 Water Polo Club here , based out of Palo Alto High School, was founded to get more girls to try and play water polo at an earlier age. The winter session runs from late November to mid-February. Mayfield can offer up a skill level match whether your daughter swims in a summer league or club but has never tried water polo at all, or did a season or two of water polo camps somewhere and wants to learn and scrimmage other local teams at the same time. Summer 2019 Italy Trip Hillview Social Studies teachers Marianne Santo and Mike Rogers will be taking students and parents on an educational tour to Italy during summer break June 2019. Thanks for all who came to the informational meeting and share our excitement for visiting Italy! T his newsletter is published by Hillview School parent volunteers every Sunday of the school year, except for Sundays preceding a full week of vacation.

Submissions to the Newsletter : The deadline to submit to the Hillview Newsletter is Wednesday at noon . Email your submission to  [email protected] . Note that submissions may be edited for content and/or length. Submissions received after the deadline will be eligible for inclusion the following week. Submissions are eligible to run for up to two weeks.

Submissions for Off-Campus Community event: E mail your announcement to  [email protected] . The submission deadline is  Wednesday at noon.
