Veterans Day Eucharist

This Sunday is Veterans Day. As part of our remembrance, we will use the communion set used in WWII by The Rev. Tim Holbrook, U.S. Army Chaplain and Captain, 91st Infantry, 363 Regiment, in Europe. Join us for this special day.

Resurrection Welcomes the Schwartzmans

It was my honor today to share our sacred space with our guests Bob & Gracie Schwartzman. We prayed aloud the names of the victims of the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, and then Bob canted the Kaddish, a mourners prayer for the dead. A special service of unity and mutual support drawn together by the power of love. 

This Sunday's Anthem:

The first three stanzas of this hymn appeal to the Trinity with Scripture passages where each Person controlled the sea, imploring "O hear us when we cry to Thee for those in peril on the sea." The first stanza refers to God's discourse with Job, in which the Lord asks "Or who shut in the sea with doors when it burst out from the womb, when I ... said, 'Thus far shall you come, and no farther, and here shall your proud waves be stayed'?" (Job 38:8, 11 ESV) The second stanza refers to two occasions when Jesus calmed the raging sea: when He walked on the water (Mark 6:45-52), and when He slept through a storm until His terrified disciples woke Him (Mark 4:35-41). The third stanza alludes to Creation, when "The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters." (Genesis 1:2 ESV) The final stanza summarizes the hymn and promises continued praise "from land and sea."

William Whiting wrote this hymn in 1860 in England. It was modified in 1861 by the editors of Hymns Ancient and Modern, where it was first published. Whiting also revised it a few times. It has become a favorite of seafaring people in English-speaking countries, both civilian and military. In America, its affiliation as the "Navy Hymn" is prompted in part by the practice dating from 1879 of concluding the Sunday services at the Naval Academy at Annapolis with the first stanza of this hymn. Inda Allen Scholarship Dinner

Sunday, November 18, 6:00 p.m.

Sautee-Nacoochee Center

The community celebration and fundraiser for the Inda Allen Scholarship Fund will be at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 18 (the Sunday before Thanksgiving) at the Sautee-Nacoochee Center.  Everyone is welcome to attend and enjoy a delicious meal, fellowship and entertainment.  Please bring a dish to share.

This annual event is jointly sponsored by churches in the Sautee-Nacoochee area:  Nacoochee United Methodist, Nacoochee Presbyterian, Resurrection Episcopal and Bean Creek Missionary Baptist.  Fr. Scott is a member of the Scholarship Advisory Board.

Inda Allen was a high school junior when she died in 1987 of a blood clot; the White County school system did not desegregate its bus system until 1990.  As a resident of the historically African-American neighborhood of Bean Creek, Inda was a scholar, athlete, fashion model and soul-stirring vocalist, but also a symbol of hope.

The Inda Allen Scholarship is an annual minority student scholarship for graduating African-American students at White County High School.  The scholarships are awarded to qualified black students for tuition and/or expenses at colleges or technical schools.

On this night of fellowship, contributions will benefit the Scholarship Fund, which has awarded nearly 40 educational scholarships to African-American students since 1988.

Resurrection Episcopal is proud to contribute to the scholarship and pleased to encouraged continuing support of the educational aspirations of African-Americans with historical ties to the Bean Creek Community.

Inda Allen - a beautiful memory that still lights the way, today and tomorrow.
