"Thank You Safe Harbor!" by Miss Honey Bee
When I got dropped off at Mesa County Animal Services last January, things weren't looking too bright for me, and I didn't feel very good. I'd suddenly gone blind, was diagnosed with diabetes and my family didn't want me anymore. Fortunately, the shelter has a great partnership with Safe Harbor who they called for help. Soon I was Denver bound!

My medical foster mom, Carol, was waiting for me. I was, in a nutshell, a medical mess.  She took me back and forth to the vet countless times for tests to get my insulin dose just right. I had surgery to remove some mammary masses (I'm OK, thank goodness) and needed thyroid medication. All that got me healthy and feeling pretty darn good. Then Safe Harbor had a wonderful surprise for me...

They took me to the eye specialist who said: "Honey Bee, now that you're healthy, you're a good candidate for cataract surgery." It's a delicate and expensive procedure for us pups, but my sight could be restored! Darkness and uncertainty gave way to light and joy at seeing my foster mom's kind face, chasing the ball and...rabbits!

There are two days I'll always be thankful for: January 23, 2018, when I came to Safe Harbor, and October 20, nine months later after being cared for by Safe Harbor, when I found my forever home with Katie.

Other Labs are waiting for a happy new beginning just like me.  You can help with a thoughtful donation on Colorado Gives Day, December 4.

Colorado Gives Day is December 4
Colorado Gives Day, a statewide day of generous charitable giving, is almost here!  Safe Harbor Lab Rescue is delighted to participate again this year. We are known for the compassionate, high standard of care our dedicated all-volunteer rescue and professional partners give our Labs.  Like with people, quality medical care is expensive! Wellness care; hip, cancer, eye and dental surgeries, diagnostic tests, pain management for our oldsters, heartworm treatment, medications for so many issues . . . it all adds up to one BIG annual vet bill! Like you, we believe the rescued Labs deserve the best care, and we strive to make everyone whole in body and spirit before they head to their forever home. We welcome your support on Colorado Gives Day!

Follow us on Facebook this month to meet some of Labs your support has helped give a new "leash" on life!

Your support through Colorado Gives Day is just a click away!  Early scheduled giving started November 1.

New Beginnings: Dakota
Crystal and Doug always find a special place in their hearts and home for dogs who are older or may otherwise be more challenging to place. Sweet ten-year-old Dakota is delighted to announce that she has found her forever home with this wonderful couple, who have described themselves as "a retirement home for dogs."  As soon as she arrived, Dakota was welcomed into the family by her new canine siblings, SHLR alumni Cody and Adonis.  While Dakota is relieved to have found the perfect place to relax and enjoy her golden years, retirement will have to wait a while as this lively lady Lab has far too many balls to chase and games to play to even consider slowing down anytime soon.

Her new family sent us an update shortly after Dakota joined them:

Wow, did Dakota settle in fast and come out of her shell. She is a very good girl and will fit in beautifully. She sure does like a good wrassle, and I'm not sure where the note about not interested in balls comes from -- she plays with squeaker balls and REALLY loves Frisbee. I've got an open one and she loves to scoop it up with her whole head. She's more Cody's speed than Adonis', which is lovely. Doug wanted me to get a dog that would play Frisbee, and thanks to his landscaping we've got a nice flat front yard to play in with no obstacles. Safe Harbor hooked me up with perfection again!!

Special thanks to Linda O. for fostering Dakota, and to Annette and Jeff for transporting her all the way to her Wyoming forever home and facilitating the adoption!

Volunteer Spotlight: Amy Malcolm and Angie Maher
Volunteers who take care of our hospice Labs are truly the "safe harbor" for our rescue. We'd like to feature Amy and Angie, two hospice fosters, who became friends when they shared custody of Missy.

Amy and Angie have a love for senior dogs and take on the rewarding and difficult job of fostering our hospice Labs, Labs who come and are too sick to be adopted. Amy says, " These sweet creatures deserve dignity - and to be completely spoiled - at the end. BTW, Missy, my first hospice foster, was very spoiled."

When Amy took a new job that required travel, Angie stepped in to foster Missy. Over time, Amy and Angie became good friends with a love for senior dogs, paddle boarding and wine.

Angie is fostering Chaco, a 10-year-old Lab with terminal liver disease. According to Angie, "Chaco is a really happy-go-lucky gal.  She has no idea she's in hospice." Amy is involved with Chaco and brings over crockpot chicken stew and dog toys to spoil her.

Why foster for Safe Harbor Lab Rescue? Here's what Amy and Angie had to say:

"It's such a great way to have a four-legged friend in your life without the long-term commitment.

Give it a shot. You won't regret it. Every dog fostered is a life saved.  Saying goodbye is incredibly hard whether it's a hospice dog or a dog that gets adopted; however, I'm happy to make this small sacrifice to give a dog a chance that might not get one otherwise."

Thank you, Amy and Angie!
