PARISH NEWS
A fghans/thr ows are here!
If you already placed an order for one of the Historic Centreville afghans/throws featuring St. John's, they have arrived! They are ready to be picked up in the office. Please see Carol. (If you didn't already order and pay for one, there are a few extras available to sell. The price is $50.)
Many Thanks to:
  • Bob Barnes, who served as our organist last Sunday.
  • Tom Campbell, who provided his legal expertise on our contract with Elim Kids Academy.
  • Val Tucker, who has spent countless hours working through the arduous process in Fairfax County to get the necessary permits for the day care center.
  • Dave Parker, who not only took apart and disposed of the old piano, but also took apart and disposed of the large desk, both in room 213, and moved many large tables and chairs, in preparation for the day care center.
  • Penny Parker and Susie Pike, who cleaned out the closet in room 213, went through old choir folders, and moved the choir robes and prayer books to room 216.
  • Donation Envelopes for Western Fairfax Christian Ministries Thanksgiving baskets now available

Envelopes are on the back table in the church to make donations to purchase the food for Thanksgiving baskets. We will be providing 10 baskets for Thanksgiving and 10 baskets for Christmas. Thanks (again!) to Marie McDermott for organizing this outreach ministry.

  • Parish News
If everything continues to go well, Elim Kids Academy will open its doors at St. John's next week. We have been working with the owner, Noah Bae, for the past year or two, and now all this work has come to fruition. The classrooms are perfect for a child care center and we thank all who have been involved in this effort, particularly the "Tiger Team" and the Vestry.

SUNDAY SERVICE
We can prepare our hearts & minds by reading ahead
for the Sunday Service lessons.
The Twenty-Fifth Sunday after Pentecost

November 11, 2018
9:30 AM
The First Reading: 1 Kings 17:8-16
The widow, in her willingness, is a vessel of God's miraculous provision for herself and her son, as well as for the prophet, Elijah.

The Psalm: 146

The Second Reading: Hebrews 9:24-28
We must enact again and again the story of repentance, forgiveness, and redemption, from the beginning of time till today. Just because we forget does not mean that God's love and sacrifice are limited, even as Jesus's gift of his life is a one-time event.

The Gospel: Mark 12:38-44
May we examine ourselves, as Jesus convicts the scribes in today's Gospel lesson, and recognize the ways and places in which we march around with our noses in the air, and march on top of others.

Catalyst
If we open our lives to God we will be changed. What usually makes us change, sometimes forces us to change, are the changes taking place around us, or within our lives. Those changes so often act as a catalyst, or as the New Testament puts it, like a refiner’s fire. They challenge us to grow and to change and to deepen our trust in God.
